A gripper for use in combination with a pin has a body having an axially open cavity in which the pin is engageable. Jaws in the cavity are radially displaceable between an inner holding position bearing radially inwardly on and gripping the pin and an outer release position in which the pin can be removed axially from the cavity. An actuating element in the body is engageable with the jaws and shiftable between end positions corresponding to the inner and outer positions of the jaws. An actuator connected to the actuating element can move it from one of the end positions into the other of the end positions. An externally accessible connecting or operating member on the chuck body is connected through an emergency release with the jaws for moving the jaws into the outer release position as the result of connection to or operation of the member.

Gripper with emergency release

A steady rest has a body juxtposable with a workpiece rotatable about a workpiece axis. Two arm elements are pivoted on the body and carry outer rollers radially engageable with the workpiece. A center element shiftable on the body in a straight line generally radially of the axis carries a center roller engageable radially with the workpiece. The rollers are angularly spaced about the workpiece. An electric actuator mounted on the body is connected by a transmission to the elements for displacing the respective roller radially relative to the workpiece.

Electric-drive steady rest

The invention relates to a method of clamping a tool or a workpiece, using an electric actuator () having a housing () attached to a work spindle of a machine tool and in which a threaded spindle () for moving jaws of a chuck is axially displaceable, and an electric servomotor () having a rotor connected with a drive wheel () that moves a nut () on the threaded spindle (), a first sensor being associated with the threaded spindle () for detecting the axial position thereof, and a second sensor being associated with the spindle nut () for detecting the axial position thereof, and including the method step of determining the position of the threaded spindle () by the first sensor when a slight axial force occurs due to contact of the clamping jaws with the tool or the workpiece, and continued movement of the spindle nut () until a specified sensor difference () between the first sensor and the second sensor is determined by the second sensor. The invention further relates to an apparatus for carrying out the method.

Method of chucking a tool or a workpiece and apparatus for carrying out the method

A chuck for a tubular body having a noncircular outer surface and an interior formed with a gripping formation has a spindle extending along an axis, axially displaceable claws in the spindle each having a pair of opposite ends, and a gripper head engageable with one of the ends of each of the claws in the spindle. This head is displaceable between a holding position in which the claws engage the gripping formation in the tubular-body interior and an open position disengaged from the gripping formation. The jaws move on displacement between the open position and the holding position by engagement of the gripper head with their one ends in a first pivotal movement and then at their other ends in a second pivotal movement to press their other ends against the working spindle.

Chuck for a tubular body

A device for clamping a stem has a body forming a piston chamber and having an axially outwardly open hole adapted to receive the stem and a plurality of collet jaws in the hole shiftable axially by a piston between an outer releasing position with its axial outer ends radially spread and an inner holding position with the ends more closely radially juxtaposed. The stem is engageable axially in the hole between the jaws and lockable in the body in the inner holding position. A main spring urges the piston and jaws axially inward into the inner position. A cover element has an outer head and is axially shiftable relative to the piston between an extended position with the head engaged radially between the outer ends of the jaws and a retracted position with the head spaced axially inward from the outer ends of the jaws.

Device usable as gripper head or chuck

The invention relates to a method for operating an actuation device (), which is used to clamp and loosen a clamping device which comprises a tie bolt which can be adjusted in an axial manner in a machine spindle (), for actuating a clamping head () which co-operates with clamping claws (). Initially, force is exerted upon the tie bolt () by means of an actuation device () which is used to clamp in an axial clamping direction, until the axial length thereof is fixed in relation to the machine spindle () by means of self-locking. According to the invention, after self-locking is obtained, the effect of the force in the direction of clamping of the actuation element () on the tie bolt is stopped and remains blocked while the clamping device is being used, and to release clamping, the tie bolt () is displaced by the actuation device () in the direction of release which is counter to the clamping direction. The invention relates to a device for carrying out said method.

Method for operating an actuation unit and device for carrying out said method

The invention relates to an apparatus for holding a workpiece () or tool having a tapered collar () or the like and having a pull-back rod () axially shiftable in a body () for actuating a chuck head () cooperating with jaws (). The axial position of the pull-back rod () is maintained in a holding position without utilizing the force of a tension spring by a self-locking mechanism.

Apparatus for chucking a tool or workpiece having a collet

A chuck actuator has a hollow housing having a chamber and having a front end and a rear end. A ring in the chamber forms with the front end thereof a front compartment and a piston in the chamber between the ring and the rear end forms an intermediate compartment with the ring and a rear compartment with the rear end. A stem on the piston projecting forward through the ring and through the intermediate and front compartments is adapted to engage and open a chuck and is formed with a region of enlarged diameter. The piston is shiftable between a rear position with the enlarged-diameter region offset rearward from the ring and with the stem forming with the ring an axially extending passage between the front and intermediate compartments and a front position with the enlarged-diameter portion fitting snugly in the ring and substantially closing the passage.

Opening actuator for collet chuck

A holder for a collar having an axially forwardly directed shoulder and axially rearward thereof a radially outwardly directed centering surface has a drive sleeve fitted over the collar and a plurality of angularly spaced jaws each formed with an axially rearwardly directed face and displaceable between an outer position with their faces bearing on the shoulder and an inner position with their faces out of engagement with the collar. An axially displaceable actuating member can move the jaws between their inner and outer positions. A plurality of retaining fingers each have an axially rearwardly directed face and axially rearward thereof a radially outwardly directed centering face. These fingers are each radially elastically deformable between an outer position with the front-end faces bearing axially rearward on the shoulder and the centering faces bearing radially outward on the collar centering surface and an inner position out of contact with the collar.

Collet chuck

A collet chuck for holding a mounting collar of an object&mdash;tool or workpiece&mdash;to be rotated has a chuck body centered on and rotatable about an axis and formed with a forwardly open socket shaped to receive the collar. A plurality of jaws in the socket have front ends engageable inside the collar in the socket and rear ends. The jaws are angularly spaced and defining axially extending and radially inwardly open slots. A setting sleeve has a front cam surface engageable with inner faces of the front ends of the jaws so that the sleeve can cam out the front ends to lock the jaws to the collar in the socket. The sleeve is formed with radially outwardly projecting and axially extending ribs each received in a respective one of the slots.

A tool or workpiece having a mounting collar centered on an axis and for internally with an axially directed shoulder is mounted on a bolder having a drive sleeve also centered on an axis and fitted coaxially over the collar and a plurality of angularly spaced jaws in the sleeve having axially outer ends each formed with a rearwardly directed face. The jaws are displaceable radially between an outer locking position with their faces bearing axially inward on the shoulder and an inner freeing position with their faces out of engagement with the collar. An axially displaceable actuating member in the sleeve moves the jaws between their inner and outer positions. Axially extending retaining fingers each have a rear end secured in the sleeve and a front end with a rearwardly directed face. The front ends normally lie in an outer holding position with their faces bearing axially inward on the shoulder and the fingers are elastically deformable into an inner releasing position with their faces out of engagement with the collar.

Holder for collar of workpiece or tool

A chuck actuator has a main housing, a tube shaft having an outer end adjacent the main housing and an inner end remote from the main housing, a core shaft axially displaceable in the tube shaft between advanced and retracted positions, and a holding device on the outer shaft ends engageable with a tool or workpiece for holding same in the retracted position of the core shaft. A coupling member fixed on the core-shaft rear end and a housing member limitedly axially displaceable relative to the main housing and juxtaposed with the coupling member have formations including a radially projecting lug on one of the members and a radially open groove on the other of the members receiving the lug with play so that the lug can move limitedly axially in the groove. An actuating body axially displaceable in the main housing has a surface axially engageable with the coreshaft rear end and a pair of inwardly directed surfaces respectively engageable with the housing member and main housing. The surfaces are spaced such that, when one of the surfaces bears axially inward on the main housing, the other of the surfaces bears axially inward on the housing member to displace it axially inward and generally center the lug in the groove. The actuating body is moved outward to displace the core shaft into the advanced position and inward to allow the core shaft to move into the retracted position and displace the housing member to center the lug in the groove.

Chuck actuator

A spindle assembly has inner and outer coaxial shafts having front and rear ends and extending along a common axis with the inner shaft axially displaceable in the outer shaft, a holding assembly on the front ends adapted to grip a tool or workpiece in an axially forwardly displaced position of the inner shaft relative to the outer shaft, a coupling ring fixed on the rear end of the outer shaft, and an actuator having a piston axially engageable with the rear end of the inner shaft and operable to axially shift the inner shaft in the outer shaft. In accordance with the invention complementarily interengaging formations on the actuator and the coupling ring including a groove and a projection are displaceable between a holding position axially securing the ring on the actuator and a freeing position allowing the ring to be axially separated from the actuator.

Mounting assembly for a machine-tool actuator

A holder for a tool or workpiece has a tubular working spindle centered on and rotatable about an axis, an elongated pulling element axially displaceable in the spindle and having a front end provided with holder jaws and a rear end with a forwardly directed face perpendicular to the axis. An actuating body axially displaceable in the spindle forward of the element face has an outwardly directed and rearwardly inwardly inclined face. A spring between the spindle and the body urges the body continuously backward. At least one wedge in the spindle between the body and the element face has a rear end face flatly abuttable with the element face, an inclined inner face flatly abuttable with the body face, and a forwardly outwardly inclined front end face. This wedge is movable between an outer position with its end faces respectively flatly abutting the element and body faces and an inner position with its rear end face flatly abutting the element face and its front end face inward of and out of contact with the body face. A support sleeve fixed in the spindle forward of the element face has a rearwardly directed and rearwardly outwardly inclined face flatly abuttable with the front face of the wedge.
