A method of progressively coding/decoding 3-D mesh information, and an apparatus therefor are provided. The progressive 3-D mesh information coding method includes the steps of reconstructing an input 3-D mesh into a plurality of mesh components, coding each of the plurality of mesh components, and multiplexing the plurality of coded mesh components into a compressed bit stream and transmitting the compressed bit stream. The method of progressively decoding the transmitted, compressed bit stream which has been coded by the coding method, includes dividing the transmitted bit stream into a plurality of coded mesh components, decoding each of the plurality of coded mesh components, and reconstructing a 3-D mesh by synthesizing the plurality of decoded mesh components.

Method of progressively coding/decoding 3-D mesh information and apparatus thereof

Methods for compressing and reconstructing an animation path using linear approximation, apparatuses for performing the methods, and data formats therefor are provided. The apparatus for compressing an animation path, has an interpolator analysis unit for extracting a predetermined number of break points from an animation path and outputting keys and key values corresponding to the break points; a key coder for coding keys output from the interpolator analysis unit; a key value coder for coding key values output from the interpolator analysis unit; and an entropy encoder for entropy encoding the keys and key values which are coded in the key coder and key value coder, respectively, and outputting encoded bit streams. According to the methods, by analyzing break points, a simplified encoded bit stream having a minimum number of break points is obtained.

Method and apparatus for compression and reconstruction of animation path using linear approximation

A method for processing nodes in 3-dimensional (3D) scene and an apparatus thereof are provided. The method includes the steps of identifying a 3D mesh node having 3D mesh information representing a 3D shape which is formed by constructing faces from vertices among nodes contained in a 3D scene to be processed; and encoding or decoding the identified 3D mesh node. Also, the method includes the step of transmitting or storing the 3D mesh information of the encoded 3D mesh node through an independent stream separate from the 3D scene description stream. According to the method, a node representing 3D mesh information having a huge volume of information in a 3D scene can be efficiently encoded and decoded so that the 3D scene can be efficiently transmitted and stored. By transmitting and storing 3D mesh information of a node representing encoded 3D mesh information, through an independent stream separate from 3D scene description information, the entire 3D scene cannot be affected even though encoded 3D mesh information has a huge volume.

There are provided an improved scan interleaving method based on context values of neighboring pixels, an improved binary shape encoding/decoding method, and encoding/decoding apparatus suitable for the same. The hierarchical binary shape encoding apparatus includes a portion for down-sampling for SI method, the portion for performing down-sampling for SI method on the binary shape data to form a base layer, a portion for encoding the base layer supplied from the down-sampling portion, and a portion for encoding an enhancement layer having the current binary shape data by referring to the base layer or a preceding frame. The encoding apparatus can perform hierarchical encoding, thereby enhancing the overall coding efficiency.

A progressive coding and decoding method of three-dimensional (3D) mesh data used in the fields of motion picture experts group-4 synthetic and natural hybrid coding (MPEG-4 SNHC), virtual reality modelling language (VRML) and the like. In transmitting 3D objects composed of 3D mesh data, it is very important to progressively restore transmitted data as well as to effectively code the 3D mesh data. In the progressive restoration, in the event that a transmission data error is generated, partial restoration of the transmitted data is allowed. Thus, it is possible to minimize the amount of mesh data to be transmitted again. The progressive restoration method which is resistant to such transmission errors can be effectively applied in wireless communications or low transmission rate communications. In the progressive coding and decoding method, connectivity, geometry and photometry necessary for progressively coding 3D mesh data are constructed and then coded/decoded, thereby providing data resilience against errors.

A progressive coding method and apparatus of three-dimensional (3D) mesh data is provided. The method includes the steps of (a) constructing a 3D triangle mesh of one or more mesh object layers, (b) partitioning each mesh object layer into a plurality of mesh components, (c) forming bitstreams in units of mesh components and coding the same, and (d) combining the coded mesh components into compressed bitstreams and transmitting the same. Therefore, progressive 3D mesh restoration is allowed, and the entropy coding efficiency can be enhanced.

Progressive 3D mesh coding method and apparatus

In a prediction method usable with synthetic and natural hybrid coding (SNHC) field or a virtual reality markup language (VRML) the difference between immediately prior information (most adjacent information) and input property information is obtained, considering the immediately prior information as the prediction value. The difference is used as a prediction error signal. A predictor having an order of 1 is used. When the output value of the predictor is fixed to 0, the prediction error signal becomes identical to an original signal. Therefore, the operation is the same as in the case where there is no predictor. The correlation of the input property information is used in order to control two operation modes of the predictor. Namely, auto-correlation is obtained from the input property information.

Adaptive predictive coding of 2D or 3D mesh information

There is provided an improved scan interleaving method suitable for multipurpose encoding of binary image data, and for selectively encoding a part or the whole of object image data according to presence or absence of exceptional sampling data (ESD). In the present invention, when the pixel data of base image data and the corresponding pixel data of the object image data to be scan-interleaved are the same (in the case of predictive sampling data), no encoding is performed on the pixels of the object image data which have no ESD, thus simplifying the algorithm and system implementation. As a result, the overall encoding performance can be improved.

Scan interleaving method

A method for encoding picture data using scan interleaving pixels and an apparatus and method for encoding the picture data includes the steps of determining whether pixels of a present scanning line in a predetermined frame of an image should be encoded according to comparison results between pixels of a previous scanning line and pixels of a next scanning line and between pixels of a previous or next scanning line and pixels of the current scanning line, and encoding pixels of lines of the image excluding pixels that are determined to not be encoded.

The arbitrary shape coding method includes the steps of: (a) determining whether or not a shape in a video object layer (VOL) is an arbitrary shape; (b) calculating the size of a video object plane (VOP) in each frame if the shape in the VOL is determined as being an arbitrary shape in the step (a); (c) coding information of each frame about whether or not all macroblocks in the VOP are opaque; (d) coding the VOP in macroblock units if the shape of each frame is determined not to be all opaque in the step (c); and (e) coding only motion and texture information in the VOP, by macroblock, if the shape in the VOL is determined to be a non-arbitrary shape in the step (a) or if the shape in the VOP in a frame is determined as all opaque in step (c). Therefore, when all pixels of the entire display region are used as the texture of the object, the coding of the arbitrary shape can be achieved by coding only 1-bit information per VOP, without the need for transmission of the shape information requiring 1.about.3 bits per macroblock. Also, the number of modules required for the coding based on a macroblock is reduced from 4 to 2, thereby reducing the amount of calculation for encoding.

A method for prediction a discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficient is provided. In the prediction method, DC coefficients of adjacent blocks are used. For selecting a DC coefficient to be used for the prediction, the maximum and the minimum among the DC coefficients of the adjacent blocks are selected, and then the maximum or minimum value which is closest to the current DC coefficient is used for the prediction value for the current block. Therefore, prediction performance for DC/AC coefficients can be improved in a DCT domain.

A video signal encoding and/or decoding method based on adaptive lattice quantization. An input frame of a video sequence is partitioned into blocks of pixel data called vectors. The set of the vectors is partitioned into blocks called macroblocks. The vectors in each macroblock are subjected to lattice vector quantization which examines the range of vector components in multiple dimensions and adjusts the density of lattice vectors in accordance with the range of vector components. Quantization unit replaces each input vector for a nearest lattice vector in multidimensional space. Each quantized vector in the macroblock is converted into an index of a lattice vector. An overhead information about the range in a macroblock and set of indices with or without subsequent Huffman or Arithmetic coding is transmitted to or stored in the receiver end.
