An apparatus for scanning an original includes a light source which is supported by a carriage movable in a scanning direction. A shield member is formed on the carriage. A first photointerrupter is provided at a home position of the carriage and a second photointerrupter is provided to a moving direction therefrom. When a forward going of the carriage is started from the home position and continued by a distance corresponding to the size of paper and/or the copy magnification, the light source is turned off and the carriage starts a returning movement. During the returning movement, the carriage travels further as far as the prescribed distance after the second photointerrupter being shielded by the shield member, thereafter a braking is applied on the carriage. The prescribed distance may be changed in accordance with the paper size or the copy magnification, accordingly the larger the returning speed of the carriage, the shorter the prescribed distance described above and longer the braking distance, which will be reduced with the increased returning speed.

Apparatus for scanning an original

A servomotor controller of a Phase Locked Loop type, in which a phase control circuit and speed control circuit are composed of digital circuits, makes it possible to set a speed of the servomotor and to change the speed with ease and accuracy. The controller also makes it possible to reduce the assembling time with smaller number of parts and high reliability is obtained when the controller is used in various apparatus since the controller can be composed of a one chip integrated circuit. One can choose freely either quick start mode, which makes the speed increase quickly up to the set speed, or soft start mode, which makes the speed increase slowly.

Servomotor controller

An electrostatic recording apparatus such as an electrophotographic copying machine includes a mobile light source being able to move reciprocatively and exposing an original copy at its forward going motion. Reflected light from the original copy exposed by the light source produces an image on a photosensitive drum through an image-forming lens, and an electrostatic latent image is formed on the photosensitive drum. This electrostatic latent image is developed with a toner to form a visible image, and the toner image is transferred onto a paper fed from a paper feeding part. Papers of different sizes can be fed from the paper feeding part, and in response to this paper size, data such as moving speed and moving distance of the light source are read from the ROM, being given to a motor controller. As a function of the paper size, different returning speed data are set in advance, and accordingly, the light source can return at a speed responding to the paper size. Furthermore, since the light source forms an image of different magnification from that of the original copy, it is moved at a different speed. When a different magnification is set, a moving speed data of the light source responding to its magnification is read from the ROM. Accordingly, the moving speed of the light source can be varied also in response to the magnification.
