A scroll fluid machine comprising a first scroll rotated by a drive source, a second scroll eccentric from the central axis of the first scroll, the second scroll cooperating with the first scroll to compress fluid, a coupling which is provided on the outer end surface of one of said first and second scrolls and engaged with the one scroll at two positions in the periphery thereof so that the scrolls are movable in diametrical directions which are perpendicular to each other, respectively, and a pair of coupling arms which are provided on the other of the first and second scrolls and engaged with the coupling at two positions in the periphery thereof, in such a manner that the phantom line connecting the positions of engagement of said coupling arms is perpendicular to the phantom line connecting the positions of engagement of said coupling.

In a scroll compressor for compressing gas by the relative orbital movement between first and second scrolls which combined with each other to form a compresson chamber therebetween and a super-charging tube is connected to an intake port formed in the first scroll. The volume of the gas to be compressed is controlled by changing the length of the super-discharging tube.

A scroll-type positive displacement apparatus which can be used as a vacuum pump is disclosed. A pair of interfitting scrolls are housed in a first container which communicates with a vacuum chamber to be evacuated by the pump. The scrolls are rotated in synchrony about parallel, nonaligned axis by a drive motor. The scrolls define a plurality of spiral compression chambers which change in size when the scrolls are rotated, compressing a gas contained in the compression chambers. The shaft of one of the scrolls has a discharge port formed therein which communicates between the centermost compression chamber and the inside of a second container which adjoins the first container. The second container is partially filled with lubricating oil and communicates with the atmosphere. The discharge port is equipped with a check valve which permits compressed gas to enter the second container from the scrolls but prevents gas from flowing in the opposite direction. The pump may be further equipped with one or more oil supply passageways formed in the shaft of the scroll in which the discharge port is formed. Lubricating oil is introduced via the oil supply passageway from the second container into one or more of the compression chambers of the pump.

A scroll compressor comprises a driving scroll, a driven scroll combined with the driving scroll to be driven by the same through the mutual contact of the wrap plates of the both scrolls, a movable bearing support held in a sealing container so as to be movable in the axial and radial directions of the container. The movable bearing support supports the driven scroll so that the driven scroll is pushed in the radial direction of the container, whereby gaps formed between the wrap plates of the driving and driven scrolls can be avoided.

An upper housing for rotatably supporting a driving scroll in a sealing container is provided with an annular chamber to be maintained at the atmospheric pressure. The annular chamber is communicated with a compression chamber formed between the driving and driven scrolls through a discharge conduit which is formed in the driving shaft of the driving scroll. The annular chamber is communicated with the inside of the container through a throttling path. An oil stored in the lower part of the container is induced with the compression chamber during the revolution of the both scrolls to be introduced into the annular chamber. Owing to the throttling path, the oil is stored in the annular chamber to separate the inside of the container and the annular chamber kept at the atmospheric pressure.

A scroll-type apparatus having a main journal bearing which journals the drive shaft of the apparatus and is capable of pivoting by small angles with two degrees of freedom. The main journal bearing comprises three or more arcuate pads whose inner surfaces journal the drive shaft and which are pivotably supported by a stationary main bearing housing. In a preferred embodiment, each of the pads has a spherical protrusion and two rotation-preventing pins secured to its back surface. The protrusions contact the inner surface of the main bearing housing and pivotably support the pads, while the rotation-preventing pins are inserted into grooves formed on the inner surface of the main bearing housing. When a load is applied to the drive shaft causing it to tilt, the pads of the main journal bearing can tilt along with the drive shaft by pivoting about the points of contact between the spherical protrusions and the inner surface of the main bearing housing, thereby preventing edge loading of the main journal bearing.

A scroll type hydraulic machine having an improved thrust bearing structure, whereby the thrust bearing is capable of tilting radially and peripherally. The thrust bearing is preferably composed of at least three sectors, and an anti-rotation member is provided between adjacent ones of the sectors. A bearing support is provided, a portion of which has the form of a ball. The thrust bearing is surrounded by an annular portion whose height is substantially the same as that of the thrust bearing.
