A fluid flow rate sensor. The fluid flow rate sensor comprises an elongated structure; a heating element installed into a first end of the elongated structure; a first temperature transducer coupled to an outside of the elongated structure at a first predefined location; a second temperature transducer coupled to the outside of the elongated structure at a second predefined location; and a control unit that is configured to turn the heating element on and off, to analyze a first temperature indication received from the first temperature transducer, to analyze a second temperature indication received from the second temperature transducer, to determine a flow rate of a fluid that is in intimate contact with the outside of the elongated structure based on analyzing the first temperature indication and the second temperature indication, and to output the flow rate via a communication line.

System and method of determining reservoir fluid flow condition and composition downhole

A distributed control system can be used to implement failover capabilities for control units that control well equipment during a well operation. For example, a system can include first well equipment that performs a first physical task and second well equipment that performs a second physical task different from the first physical task. Additionally, the system can include a distributed control system with a first control unit coupled to the first well equipment and a second control unit coupled to the second well equipment. Both control units may include a first control module and a second control module for automatically controlling the first physical task and the second physical task, respectively. The distributed control system can detect a failure of the second control unit and initiate a failover process in which the first control unit takes over control of the second physical task by enabling the second control module.

Encoding downhole data in nucleic acid molecules provides increased speed accuracy in the communication of downhole data to the surface. Nucleic acid molecules can be coded with downhole data using a telemetry module that comprises a microfluidic system to perform an encoding process that encodes carrier nucleic acid molecules with substitute sequences or segments at specific locations that comprise retrieved or acquired downhole data. The encoded carrier nucleic acid molecules are injected into a downhole fluid that is circulated to the surface. Once the encoded carrier nucleic acid molecules reach the surface, the information can be decoded and analyzed. Each carrier nucleic acid molecule may be preconfigured with a header. The header may comprise information that allows N for ease in coding and recombining downhole data.

Aspects of the subject technology relate to systems and methods for identifying values of mud and formation parameters based on measurements gathered by an electromagnetic imager tool through machine learning. One or more regression functions that model mud and formation parameters capable of being identified through an electromagnetic imager tool as a function of possible tool measurements of the electromagnetic imager tool can be generated using a known dataset associated with the electromagnetic imager tool. One or more tool measurements obtained by the electromagnetic imager tool operating to log a wellbore can be gathered. As follows, one or more values of the mud and formation parameters can be identified by applying the one or more regression functions to the one or more tool measurements.

A siphon pump chimney can be used in a mini-drillstem test to increase formation fluid flow rates. A formation tester can be coupled to a siphon pump chimney via a wet connect assembly to transfer formation fluid from a fluid-bearing formation. The siphon pump chimney can receive the formation fluid through the wet connect and disperse the formation fluid into a drill pipe that is flowing drilling fluid. The siphon pump chimney can include check valves to prevent the drilling fluid from entering the siphon pump chimney. The siphon pump chimney can be configured to have a variable height that can reduce pressure within the siphon pump chimney to a pressure value that can be close to or less than the formation pressure, which can allow a pump to operate at high flow rates or be bypassed in a free flow configuration.

Fluid characteristics of a well fluid can be monitored. For example, a computing device can receive sensor signals from an acoustic sensor positioned on a well tool. The sensor signals can indicate characteristics of acoustic emissions generated by a well fluid impacting the well tool. The computing device can determine an acoustic signature for the well fluid using the characteristics of the acoustic emissions. The computing device can determine a difference between the acoustic signature a baseline acoustic-signature for the well fluid. The computing device can determine one or more fluid characteristics of the well fluid using the difference between the acoustic signature and the baseline acoustic-signature. The computing device can transmit a notification indicating the one or more fluid characteristics.

Aspects of the subject technology relate to systems and methods for controlling a hydraulic fracturing job. One or more perforations to create during a fracturing stage of a fracturing job at one or more corresponding perforation sites in a wellbore can be identified. The one or more perforations can be formed through one or more perforation devices disposed in the wellbore. Specifically, the one or more perforation devices can be selectively activated from a surface of the wellbore through a well intervention-less technique to selectively form the one or more perforations during the fracturing stage. Further, a volume of fracturing fluid can be pumped into the wellbore during the fracturing stage to form one or more first fractures in a surrounding formation through the one or more perforations.

An apparatus includes a subsurface sensor for use in a borehole to provide a subsurface measurement series, a subsurface processor to receive the subsurface measurement series, and a machine-readable medium. The machine-readable medium has program code to cause the apparatus to obtain the subsurface measurement series and generate an atom combination based on the subsurface measurement series using the subsurface processor, wherein the atom combination comprises a subset of atoms from a dictionary. The code also has instructions to generate a set of characterizing values and transmit the set of characterizing values to a different physical location, wherein the set of characterizing values comprises an atom identifier and at least one corresponding atom weight for at least one atom from the atom combination.

Optical fiber having a graphene coating, a method to apply a graphene coating onto an optical fiber, and a fiber optic cable having a graphene coating are disclosed. A first carbon based coating is applied to an optical fiber along a longitudinal axis of the optical fiber. A laser beam is focused at the first carbon based coating. A first surface of the first carbon based coating is photothermally converted into a first layer of graphene.

Systems and methods are provided for applying a protective graphene barrier to waveguides and using the protected waveguides in wellbore applications. A well monitoring system may comprise a waveguide comprising a graphene barrier, wherein the graphene barrier comprises at least one material selected from the group consisting of graphene, graphene oxide, and any combination thereof; a signal generator capable of generating a signal that travels through the waveguide; and a signal detector capable of detecting a signal that travels through the waveguide.

Systems and methods for noise cancellation in electromagnetic telemetry systems. A method for noise cancellation in electromagnetic telemetry may include: disposing an electromagnetic tool in a lateral section of a wellbore, wherein the electromagnetic tool comprises a transmitter; positioning a first counter electrode at a surface of the Earth; positioning a second counter electrode at the surface on an opposite side of the wellbore from the lateral section; transmitting a signal from the electromagnetic tool; measuring a first electromagnetic field property using the first counter electrode to obtain a received voltage; measuring a second electromagnetic field property using the second counter electrode to obtain a noise voltage; and removing noise from received voltage using the noise voltage.

A well monitoring system includes a plurality of transmitter coils coupled to an exterior of a casing positioned within a wellbore, wherein one or more first transmitter coils are positioned at a first location and one or more second transmitter coils are positioned at a second location axially offset from the first location. At least one receiver coil is coupled to the exterior of the casing and positioned at the second location. A power source is communicably coupled to the one or more first and second transmitter coils. The one or more first transmitter coils generates a magnetic field detectable by the at least one receiver coil, and the one or more second transmitter coils generates a bucking signal that minimizes a direct coupling between the one or more first transmitter coils and the at least one receiver coil.
