A transparent glass-ceramic materials contains a spinel solid solution as the main crystalline phase and is free of AsOand SbO. Corresponding precursor alumino-silicate glasses, articles made of said transparent glass-ceramic materials as well as a method for manufacturing such articles, and structures comprising a sheet made of such glass-ceramic materials and electronic or optoelectronic devices comprising such structures are also disclosed. Some materials disclosed can be used as substrates for high temperature growth of high quality monocrystalline or polycrystalline silicon thin films. Structures including such substrates with such thin films thereon can be used in photovoltaic devices, flat panel devices and liquid crystal devices.

Arsenic-free spinel glass-ceramics with high visible transmission

Described herein are glass ceramic compositions with bulk scattering properties that have improved light extraction properties due to high levels of diffuse transmission, and methods of making such glass ceramic compositions. The compositions are based on LiO&#x2014;AlO&#x2014;SiOglass ceramics and with the proper crystal size, exhibit good volume scattering characteristic for visible light and enhance the outcoupling from the substrate to the air in optical devices, such as light emitting diodes.

Glass ceramics with bulk scattering properties and methods of making them

An optical package includes a semiconductor laser, a wavelength conversion device and a MEMS-actuated mirror oriented on a base module to form a folded optical pathway between an output of the semiconductor laser and an input of the wavelength conversion device. An optical assembly is located in a mechanical positioning device and the mechanical positioning device is disposed on the base module along the optical pathway such that the beam of the semiconductor laser passes through the optical assembly, is reflected by the MEMS-actuated mirror back through the optical assembly and into the waveguide portion of the wavelength conversion device. The MEMS-actuated mirror is operable to scan the beam of the semiconductor laser over the input of the wavelength conversion device. The optical assembly may be adjusted along the optical pathway with the mechanical positioning device to focus the beam into the waveguide portion of the wavelength conversion device.

Optical packages and methods for aligning optical packages

Methods of controlling semiconductor lasers are provided where the semiconductor laser generates a wavelength-modulated output beam &#x3bb;that is directed towards the input face of a wavelength conversion device. The intensity of a wavelength-converted output &#x3bb;of the device is monitored as the output beam of the laser is modulated and as the position of the modulated output beam &#x3bb;on the input face of the wavelength conversion device is varied. A maximum value of the monitored intensity is correlated with optimum coordinates representing the position of the modulated output beam &#x3bb;on the input face of the wavelength conversion device. The optical package is operated in the data projection mode by directing an intensity-modulated laser beam from the semiconductor laser to the wavelength conversion device using the optimum positional coordinates. Additional embodiments are disclosed and claimed. Laser controllers and projections systems are also provided.

Frequency modulation in the optical alignment of wavelength-converted laser sources

The present invention relates generally to wavelength conversion devices and laser projection systems incorporating the same. According to one embodiment of the present invention, wavelength conversion devices are provided without limitation of their field of use to laser projection systems. For example, the wavelength conversion device may comprise a waveguide region comprising a relatively linear waveguide portion and a pair of lateral planar waveguide portions. The output face of the wavelength conversion device comprises a multi-component output face comprising a core portion and a pair of lateral portions. The lateral portions of the output face are configured to be relatively non-transmissive and the waveguide region is structured such that an optical signal propagating along the waveguide region will define relatively low intensity laterally distributed parasitic light in substantial alignment with the lateral planar waveguide portions along the lateral, non-transmissive portions of the output face. Additional embodiments are disclosed and claimed.
