A method of inhibiting the growth or replication of viruses of the HIV group is disclosed. Also disclosed are compounds useful in the method and pharmaceutical formulations incorporating such compounds. The method involves the use of compounds having the general formula: ##STR1## wherein the substituent groups are as defined in the specification.

Treatment of HIV infections and compounds useful therein

The present invention is directed to a novel class of pyrimidinyl aryl ketone oximes having excellent herbicidal and insecticidal activity. The novel compounds are represented by the structures I, Ia and Ib shown immediately below. Herbicidal activity is particularly directed against 'weed-like' grasses and broadleaf weeds while the insecticidal properties are particularly active against rice planthoppers and aphids. ##STR1##

This invention is related to a novel class of 3-arylpyrimidine ethers and thioethers having insecticidal, miticidal and nematocidal activity at low concentration. The class of compounds is represented by formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, R.sup.7, X and Y have the significance given in the description. Pesticidal compositions, methods of controlling pests and methods for preparing the compounds are within the scope of the invention.

In addition, a process for forming the compound is set forth. A method for controlling weeds which comprises applying a herbicidally effective amount of the compound recited above is also described. Finally, a composition, useful as a herbicide, including the compound of this invention and a suitable carrier therefor is taught.

3-aryldihydrouracils

Novel 3-(2-haloalkyl)-1,4-oxathiins or 2-(2-haloalkyl)-1,4-dithiins, useful for regressing or inhibiting the growth of leukemia and tumors in mammals. The compounds have the formula.: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is an alkyl group containing up to 4 carbon atoms, cyclohexyl or phenyl;

3-(2-Haloalkyl)-1,4-oxathiins and 2-(2-haloalkyl)-1,4-dithiins, and

2,3-Dihydro-5,6-diphenyl-1,4-oxathiin is prepared by reacting benzoin and 2-mercaptoethanol in an alkanol solvent of 2 to 8 carbon atoms and an acidic catalyst. The use of alcohol solvent in lieu of aromatic solvents gives much greater purity with much better yields.

Process for the preparation of 2,3-dihydro-5,6-diphenyl-1,4-oxathiin

Substituted 2,3-dihydro-1,4-oxathiins of the formula ##STR1## display useful plant growth regulant effects including herbicidal effects. Examples are 2,3-dihydro-5,6-diphenyl-1,4-oxathiin, and 2,3-dihydro-5-(4-methylphenyl)-6-phenyl-1,4-oxathiin 4-oxide. The compounds are useful for the selective control of grasses and as dwarfing agents, as well as for inhibition of vegetative and reproductive axillary growth, and for increasing the sugar content of sugar producing species. A number of these are new compounds.

A broad class of furan-3-Carboxamide derivatives, including many novel compounds, can be made reliably and in good yields by a novel one step reaction between an .alpha.-hydroxyketone and an acetamide in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts agent in an inert solvent.
