Use of a Location ID in addition to normal information to allow development of non-shortest path routes. The edge switches which terminate the distance links between locations are identified. Shortest path routes are determined for all switches in the same location. For each edge switch, routes over the distance links to other locations are determined, marking the interface connected to the distance links. The two determined sets of routes are combined. For devices directly connected to the edge switch, only the marked interface is used to reach the other location. For switches directly connected to the edge switch, use only routes from non-marked interfaces to marked interfaces and remove any routes from marked to marked or non-marked to non-marked interfaces. This operation for the directly connected switches allows single hops that are non-shortest path to an edge switch and removes certain potential loopback situations due to shortest path routes.

Method and apparatus for enhanced routing within a shortest path based routed network containing local and long distance links

A management application can automatically coordinate the decommissioning of ports in a switch, ensuring that ports are gracefully taken out of service without unnecessary interruption of service and triggering of automatic recovery functionality that may occur during manual decommissioning of ports. Embodiments may provide for decommissioning of F_ports only, E_ports only, or both F_ports and E_ports. Where link aggregation is provided for in the fabric, decommissioning of a port in a link aggregation group may be performed if there are other operational links in the group. Decommissioning of a non-aggregated port (or the last operational port in a link aggregation group) may be performed if there is a redundant path available.

Port decommissioning

A Layer 2 network switch is partitionable into a plurality of switch fabrics. The single-chassis switch is partitionable into a plurality of logical switches, each associated with one of the virtual fabrics. The logical switches behave as complete and self-contained switches. A logical switch fabric can span multiple single-chassis switch chassis. Logical switches are connected by inter-switch links that can be either dedicated single-chassis links or logical links. An extended inter-switch link can be used to transport traffic for one or more logical inter-switch links. Physical ports of the chassis are assigned to logical switches and are managed by the logical switch. Legacy switches that are not partitionable into logical switches can serve as transit switches between two logical switches.
