A process is provided for generating hollow mineral tube comprising one or more essential oils (EOs) and incorporating same in and/or on a substrate. Further disclosed are articles and methods, which are useful in inhibiting, reducing and/or retarding biofilm formation.

Hollow mineral tubes comprising essential oils and uses thereof

A system for detecting target elements such as bacteria in a host analyte, comprising a substrate with an ordered array of wells having diameters to fit the size of the targets. The substrate may be a periodic macro-PSi array structure (MPSiAS) illuminated with a broadband source. The reflected light spectrum diffracted from the substrate is optically analyzed to provide the effective optical depth of the wells. Fast Fourier Transform analysis may be used for the optical analysis. Entry of target elements into wells is detected by the change in the effective optical depths of the wells. Micro-organisms as large as bacteria and viruses having dimensions comparable with the wavelength of the illumination can thus be detected. Wells with an inner section impenetrable by the target cells enables compensation for environmental changes. The detection may be performed in real time, such that production line bacterial monitoring may be achieved.

Method and apparatus for bacterial monitoring

Methods of determining a phenotype of cells in a biological sample are provided. The methods are based measuring a refractive index of said cells based on a diffraction pattern received from a diffraction grating having a plurality of compartments having lateral dimensions such that said cells can fit therein.

Methods of determining cellular phenotypes

The present invention uses externally applied electromagnetic stimulus to control and heat porous magnetic particles and material associated with the particles. The particles contain magnetic material, such as superparamagnetic iron oxide and are infused with a material. Application of a DC magnetic field allows them to be moved with their infused material, and application of an AC RF electromagnetic field allows them to be heated with their infused material. The material can be infused into pores of the particles and the particles can also adhere to an aqueous droplet. The present invention also provides a multi-layer porous magnetic particle. The particle includes a host layer having pores sized to accept magnetic nanoparticles. Magnetic nanoparticles are infused within pores of the host layer. An encoding layer includes pores that define a spectral code. The pores in the encoding layer are sized to substantially exclude the magnetic nanoparticles. The encoding layer can also be a multi-layer, exhibiting, for example, a complex spectral code.
