The present invention involves a method of delaminating aggregated particles of natural silicate, nanoplatelet, nanofiber, or nanotube structures. The method comprises diffusing a coating agent in a substantially supercritical fluid between the aggregated particles and catastrophically depressurizing the substantially supercritical fluid to form delaminated particles.

The present invention involves a method of delaminating a graphite structure. The method comprises diffusing a coating agent in a supercritical fluid between layered particles of a graphite structure defining contacted graphite particles and catastrophically depressurizing the supercritical fluid to form delaminated graphite particles.

The present invention involves a method of preparing a reinforced polymer providing improved mechanical properties. The method includes providing particles of the layered silicate and a supercritical fluid. The method further includes mixing the layered silicate with a polymer to form a treatable silicate-polymer mixture and contacting the treatable mixture with the supercritical fluid to exfoliate the silicate particles so that the particles disperse within the polymer. The method further includes depressurizing the contacted mixture to exfoliate the layered silicate so that the layers are substantially dispersed within the polymer to define a reinforced polymer.

The present invention involves a system and method of delaminating a layered silicate to provide improved mechanical properties to select materials such as polymers. The method includes providing particles of the layered silicate and a supercritical fluid. The method further includes contacting the layered silicate particles with the supercritical fluid to define contacted layered silicate particles and catastrophically depressurizing the contacted layered silicate particles to exfoliate the layered particles so that the layered particles are substantially dispersed, defining treated silicate particles.

System and method of delaminating a layered silicate material by supercritical fluid treatment

A method of removing a coating material from a substrate surface portion comprises providing a substrate having a coating material adhered to a surface thereof. The coating material comprises a CO,-soluble material. The coating material is contacted to a fluid comprising carbon dioxide to dissolve the coating material therein. The carbon dioxide fluid is then separated from the substrate to remove the coating material from the substrate surface.

Use of CO2-soluble materials as transient coatings

A structure of CO.sub.2 -insoluble material has a three-dimensional object of CO.sub.2 -soluble material positioned inside. The object is contacted with a fluid containing carbon dioxide which dissolves the object in the fluid. The fluid is then removed to form a cavity in the structure.
