A wireless communications network has a plurality of terminals and at least one base station which transmits data to each one of said plurality of terminals on a wireless downlink and receives data from each one of said plurality of terminals on a wireless uplink. One of the terminals sends a rate request to the base station. The rate request requests that the data rate on the wireless uplink for the terminal be changed. In response to the rate request, the base station sends a rate grant to the terminal. The rate grant indicates whether or not the terminal may change the data rate on the wireless uplink.

A method and an arrangement are provided for timing a change of diversity weights in a radio connection between a base station and a terminal. A response timing mode is selected from a number of predefined response timing modes. The terminal is informed about the selected response timing mode. An initiation is received from the terminal and it is responded to the initiation by changing certain diversity weights so that the exact moment of time for effecting the change is determined by the selected response timing mode.

A method of sending feedback information in a fast physical layer hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) for frequency division duplex communications that form an overall wireless communication system is described in which the received packets are acknowledged by transmitting feedback data to the sender, wherein the acknowledgement comprises the reservation of obtaining a plurality of slots in the uplink/downlink dedicated channel radio frame for the feedback data alone. It is also directed to the transmission of feedback data used in specified slots within each radio frame, wherein the first slot used is based upon the time offset between uplink and downlink channels, as well as based upon the time required for de-interleaving, de-ratematching, decoding and error checking. In an alternative embodiment, the method uses dedicated physical control channel (DPCCH) bits in at least some of the slots for transmitting such feedback data to the sender.

Method of sending feedback information in a fast automatic repeat request forming part of an overall wireless communication system

A system in which a packet-sending entity and a packet-receiving entity communicate using a plurality of parameter signaling channels (SCCH) and also using a plurality of shared data channels (SDCH) and do so according to a protocol in which when packet data are transmitted over one or more transmission time intervals (TTIs), the communication being such that once a parameter signaling channel is assigned to the packet-receiving entity for communicating a packet, the assigned channel is used in each subsequent TTT as long as there is at least a portion of the packet in the subsequent TTI. When there is, the packet-receiving entity despreads and decodes only one parameter signaling channel for the subsequent TTI along with the data channels. When there is not, the packet-receiving entity despreads all the parameter signaling channels for the subsequent TTI, and may decode some or all of the parameter signaling channels.

Method and apparatus for controlling transmission of packets in a wireless communication system

When employing HARQ in soft handover (SHO) in a mobile communication system, a mobile station in communication with multiple base stations is signaled by each of the base stations when a packet sent by the mobile station is correctly received. However, while one or more base stations may have received the transmission correctly, others may not have, and retransmission may be called for. To address the possibility of having to resend such a packet, the mobile station of the invention retransmits only if a selected number of the base stations received the transmission incorrectly and does not if at least one base station received the original transmission correctly. The mobile transmits at a rate selected according to a rule from data rate information or signaling received from one or more of the base stations. The network is then able to retrieve the packet from one or more of the base stations which have received it correctly and to supply it to another or others which have not.

The invention relates to a TDMA method, transmitter and receiver, wherein a training sequence is modulated and superposed on a data signal to thereby generate a TDMA burst. Thereby, the training sequence can be made longer and is always available during data reception, such that longer channel impulse responses can be measured. In the transmitter, the training sequence is separately modulated in a modulating means ( ) before being superposed on the data signal.
