Techniques for powering a multi-unit optical network terminal (MU-ONT) located outside of a multi-unit building include obtaining reverse power from Power-over-Ethernet (POE) lines connecting the MU-ONT to terminal units (TUs) or customer premises equipments (CPEs) disposed inside the building. Reverse power may be injected into the PoE lines at the TUs, for example. Via an MU-ONT reverse powering device, the reverse power may be separated from services data provided via the PoE lines, and the services data may be delivered between the TUs and a Passive Optical Network (PON) via the MU-ONT. The reverse power obtained from the PoE lines may be aggregated to provide the MU-ONT with power commensurate with its power load. In some embodiments, the MU-ONT power load may be shared or distributed across PoE lines in a passive or actively controlled manner based on variations in the MU-ONT load and/or respective characteristics of the PoE lines.

An enclosure for retaining at least one networking component may include a shell forming a first chamber and a second chamber, a dielectric fluid adapted to be disposed in the first chamber, a mounting mechanism at least partially disposed within the first chamber, a coolant distribution line at least partially disposed within the first chamber, and a coolant circulator at least partially disposed within the shell. The mounting mechanism includes at least one coupling member adapted to retain at least one active networking component. The coolant distribution line includes an elongated member having at least one opening formed on a portion thereof. The coolant circulator is adapted to circulate the dielectric fluid within the first chamber of the shell via the coolant distribution line. The mounting mechanism is adapted to be submerged in the dielectric fluid.

A retention bracket for retaining an optical network component is provided that includes a base panel having a body defining cavity, and a mounting panel adapted to be at least partially inserted into the cavity of the base panel. The mounting panel includes a body having an upper portion, a lower portion, and a facing surface. The shell includes a plurality of sidewalls and is disposed in a subterranean environment. The heat exchanger is adapted to dissipate thermal energy from the dielectric fluid exiting the coolant circulator prior to the dielectric fluid entering the coolant distribution line, and extends outwardly from the shell.

The adjustable overflow assembly moves between the lower portion and the upper portion of the shell. The adjustable overflow assembly and mounting mechanism are adapted to be submerged in the dielectric fluid.

A system for locating optical fiber includes a vehicle's computing device transmitting an acoustic signal and its location, an optical fiber transmitting light signals, an optical detector detecting reflected light due to the acoustic signal, and a server analyzing the reflected light to determine the fiber's location. A method involves receiving a reflected light signal at a computing device, analyzing its properties to identify an acoustic signal's properties, comparing these to a known audio signature emitted from a vehicle, and determining the fiber's location based on the identified vehicle's location. Another method includes a vehicle's computing device transmitting an acoustic signal, determining the vehicle's location, and transmitting this location to a server to determine the optical fiber's location based on the acoustic signal's properties.

Passive optical couplers having passive optical activity indicators and methods of operating the same are disclosed. An example passive optical coupler for passively coupling first and second optical fibers includes a housing including: a first port configured to receive an end of a first optical fiber, and a second port configured to receive an end of a second optical fiber; and a passive optical activity indicator positioned at least partially within the housing, wherein a first portion of the passive optical activity indicator is exposed through the housing, and wherein the passive optical activity indicator is configured to passively illuminate in response to (i) first light propagating in the first optical fiber when the end of the first optical fiber is received in the first port, and (ii) second light propagating in the second optical fiber when the end of the second optical fiber is received in the second port.

Systems and methods for collecting information regarding optical connections in an FDH are disclosed. An example FDH includes: a bulkhead having a plurality of passive optical couplers, each of the plurality of passive optical couplers having a respective first port adapted to receive an end of a respective first optical fiber, a respective second port adapted to receive an end of a respective second optical fiber, and a respective passive optical activity indicator configured to expose (i) a portion of first light propagating in the respective first optical fiber when the first optical fiber is received in the first port, and (ii) a portion of second light propagating in the respective second optical fiber when the second optical fiber is received in the second port; and an image sensor configured to capture one or more images of the respective passive optical activity indicators of the plurality of passive optical couplers.
