An exhaust gas turbocharger for an internal combustion engine, which has an exhaust gas turbine in the exhaust system and a compressor in the induction system, comprises a variable turbine geometry, associated with the turbine, for adjustably setting a radial inlet cross section for the flow to the turbine rotor. The variable turbine geometry is configured as a guide cascade ring, which has guide vanes distributed over the periphery and encompasses the turbine rotor. The minimum distance between two adjacent guide vanes obeys a specified relationship with respect to the diameter of the turbine rotor and the number of guide vanes of the guide cascade ring. In addition, a flow edge is provided on the radially inner surface of each guide vane.

In a turbine for an exhaust gas turbocharger including a turbine wheel with a number of turbine wheel blades supported in a housing, which defines a first radial inlet flow channel and which includes in the radial inlet flow channel a variable guide vane structure for guiding exhaust gas radially onto the turbine wheel, and a second, semi-axial, flow channel for guiding exhaust gas semi-axially to the turbine wheel, the turbine wheel blades are arranged and sized so as to define between circumferentially adjacent blades, a flow passage with a flow cross-section which has a minimum at its inlet end.

An exhaust-gas turbocharger for an internal combustion engine has a turbine having a variable turbine geometry for the variable setting of the effective flow inlet cross section to the turbine wheel. The exhaust-gas turbocharger has a compressor which is connected to the turbine via a shaft. The variable turbine geometry can be adjusted by means of a regulating device between a closed position and an open position. To compensate for wear, a stop limiting an end position of the variable turbine geometry is provided, and the position of this stop can be set in a variable manner.

Exhaust-gas turbocharger for an internal combustion engine and method of operating an exhaust-gas turbocharger

An engine brake for a supercharged internal combustion engine for driving a motor vehicle is operated such that the working gas compressed during engine braking, prior to the end of the expansion cycle, is drawn at least partially from the working chambers of the engine through at least one throttle valve, with an exhaust turbocharger of the engine having an exhaust turbine with variable turbine geometry. The engine braking power is regulated based upon the travel of the throttle valve and/or an intake cross section of the exhaust turbine as a function of the operating parameters of the internal combustion engine and the vehicle driving speed. Upon issuance of a signal indicating a braking performance requirement from the driver, the required braking power is applied at least preferably through the engine brake.

An exhaust-gas turbocharger turbine of an internal combustion engine is provided with a spiral guide passage arranged in a turbine housing, a turbine impeller, a flow gap be ween the guide passage and the turbine impeller, and guide blades forming a guide cascade. The guide cascade with the guide blades projects axially from a support, arranged so as to be displaceable in the axial direction in the turbine housing, in such a way that the guide blades, in normal operation, are mounted in recesses of a housing wall part of the turbine housing, the recesses, in the form of a female piece, forming a mating profile shape for the guide blades. In braking operation of the internal combustion engine, the guide blades project into the flow gap during an axial displacement of the support. The device with actuation for the braking operation can be fitted as a complete module into the turbine spiral.

An internal-combustion engine has an engine braking device which has brake valves by way of which the combustion chamber content of the cylinders can be diverted in the engine braking phase. In the engine braking operation, the brake valves are changed into the opening position. In order to increase the operational reliability of the engine braking device, a blocking device is provided which acts upon the brake valves and which can be adjusted between a holding position and a release position. In the holding position of the blocking device, the brake valves are held in the opening position.

In a turbocharger system for internal combustion engines, the internal combustion engine has at least one combustion chamber with a variable volume and a swept volume determined by the sum of the differential volumes between the smallest and largest volumes of the combustion chambers of the internal combustion engine. The turbocharger system associated to the internal combustion engine has at least one turbine arranged in the exhaust gas pipe of the internal combustion engine and provided with a flow channel which opens via an annular jet-shaped region onto a turbine wheel. A guiding apparatus arranged in the opening region of the flow channel has a variable guiding grid with adjustable guiding blades which make it possible to obtain free flow sections of different sizes and which acts as a throttle during braking in an adjustable manner, depending on the operational parameters of the internal combustion engine, for determining the narrowest flow section in the exhaust gas pipe that leads to the turbine. The system is characterized in that at maximum braking power the relation between the free flow section A in the exhaust gas pipe that leads to the turbine, the inlet diameter D of the turbine wheel and the swept volume V,of the internal combustion engine is described by the equation (I) when the braking power supplied by the internal combustion engine during braking is at its maximum, the turbo-braking factor (TBF) being smaller than 0.0005 (5%). The internal combustion engine and the turbocharger are matched so as to supply maximum braking power with low thermal stress.

In the case of a method for operationally testing an exhaust gas turbocharger with a variable turbine geometry, actual values are detected of operating quantities which influence the operational capability of the exhaust gas turbocharger and which comprise main quantities which are used for deciding whether a fault exists in the exhaust gas turbocharger, as well as auxiliary quantities which describe a component of the exhaust gas turbocharger and are used for identifying faults in this component. In a first step, for fault detection, a quantity is measured as the main quantity which determines the engine air supply. In a second step, at least one auxiliary quantity is measured for the fault identification and, in the event of an unacceptable deviation of the actual auxiliary quantity value from the desired auxiliary quantity value, a fault signal is generated.
