A method of detecting pain in a subject, comprises the steps of generating brain wave data based on brain wave activity of the subject and comparing the brain wave data to reference data to generate result data, the reference data corresponding to at least one of (i) population normative data indicative of brain wave activity of a first plurality of individuals in an absence of pain, (ii) population reference data indicative of brain wave activity of a second plurality of individuals generated in response to pain events inflicted on the second plurality of individuals, (iii) subjective population reference data indicative of brain wave activity of a third plurality of individuals reporting a sensation of pain, and (iv) population of reference data indicative of brain wave activity of a fourth population of individuals following an intervention which has changed a subjective report of pain in combination with determining a presence of pain experienced by the subject as a function of the result data.

System and method for pain detection and computation of a pain quantification index

A method of treating a central nervous system (CNS) disorder, comprises the steps of inserting into a patient's body first and second conduits so that distal ends of the first and second conduits open to a portion of the patient's CNS with direct access to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and a proximal end of the first conduit opens into a first reservoir of material to be introduced into the CSF and a proximal end of the second conduit opens to drain CSF withdrawn from the CNS in combination with the steps of detecting and analyzing brain activity of a patient and determining a chemical imbalance present in the CSF by one of a microassay of a sample of CSF withdrawn from the second reservoir and the detected and analyzed brain activity. Based on the determined chemical imbalance, the patient is treated by one of supplying an agent to the CSF via the first conduit and withdrawing a quantity CSF via the second conduit. A system for treating disorders of the central nervous system (CNS), comprises first and second conduits, wherein, when in an operative position, distal ends of the first and second conduits open into a portion of a patient's CNS with direct access to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and wherein, when in the operative position, a proximal end of the second conduit opens to drain CSF from the CNS and a first reservoir implantable within the patient's body and holding material to be introduced to the CNS in combination with a first pump coupled to the first reservoir and the first conduit for introducing the material to the CNS via the first conduit and a brain wave detection unit for detecting and analyzing brain waves of the patient.

System and method for correction of intracerebral chemical imbalances

Method for determining anesthesia dosage includes following steps. First Interventional Agent ('FIA') is administered to Patient at a first rate to achieve First Predetermined Plane of Anesthesia ('FPPA'). Brain waves of Patient are analyzed to formulate First Set of Data (&#x201c;FSD&#x201d;) corresponding to a self-norm during administration of FIA. First transfer function corresponding to patient biochemical reactions to FIA is computed from FSD. Rate of administration of FIA to Patient is altered by a selected amount after achievement of FPPA for first time required for Patient to deviate from FPPA by predetermined degree. An altered amount of FIA required to cause the predetermined deviation is determined as difference between amount of FIA that would have been delivered to Patient during first time at the first rate and an amount delivered to Patient during the first time at the altered rate. Patient is administered the altered amount of FIA.

System and method for guidance of anesthesia, analgesia and amnesia

A method comprises the steps of obtaining a baseline measurement corresponding to a representation of brain activity from a living body and storing the baseline measurements on a storage device configured to be wearable on the living body in combination with obtaining, at a time subsequent to the baseline measurement, a second measurement representing brain activity from the living body, reading the baseline measurement from the storage device and evaluating the living body based on a comparison of the second measurement to the baseline measurement. A system for analyzing electrical brain activity, the system comprises a component for reading, from a storage medium, data corresponding to a baseline measurement of brain activity of a living body and a component for determining data representing a current brain activity of the living body in combination with a component for evaluating the living body by comparing the baseline measurement data and the current brain activity data.

Electronic identity card

A portable EEG (electroencephalograph) instrument, especially for use in emergencies and brain assessments in physicians' offices, detects and amplifies brain waves and converts then into digital data for analysis by comparison with data from normal groups. In one embodiment, the EEG electrodes are in a headband which broadcasts the data, by radio or cellular phone, to a local receiver for re-transmission and/or analysis. In another embodiment, the subject is stimulated in two modes, i.e., aural and sensory, at two different frequencies to provide the subject's EPs (Evoked Potentials), assessing transmission through the brainstem and thalamus.

Brain function scan system

An osmotic pump includes a plurality of agent reservoirs; first and second solute chambers; a semi-permeable membrane separating the first and second solute chambers from one another; a flexible membrane separating a first one of the agent reservoirs from the first solute chamber; and a plurality of valves. Each of the valves is moveable between an open position in which a corresponding one of the agent reservoirs is open to an outlet of the pump and a closed position in which the corresponding one of the agent reservoirs is sealed with respect to the pump outlet.

Described is a method and system which includes a first set of digital data generated by amplifying and digitizing brain waves of a patient before and after administration of initial doses of interventional agents to the patient and a second set of digital data generated by amplifying and digitizing brain waves of the patient during a medical procedure. The system also includes a display outputting the trajectories for the at least two different indices of anesthetic state of the patient to a user for consideration in formulating subsequent dosages of the interventional agents to be administered to the patient.

A system for treating a disorder of a central nervous system (CNS) comprises first and second conduits, distal ends of which are open to a patient's cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). A proximal end of the second conduit opens to drain CSF from the CNS. A first implantable reservoir holds a first material to be introduced to the CNS. An intracranial pressure detecting unit includes a transmitter for providing auditory signals to the patient and a BAUR analyzer for analyzing brainstem evoked auditory potentials to determine current intracranial pressure. A pump is coupled to the first reservoir and introduces the first material to the CNS via the first conduit. A brain activity detection unit delects and analyzes brain activity of the patient and controls drainage of CSF based on input from the intracranial pressure detecting unit to maintain intracranial pressure within a predetermined range.

A system and method includes administering interventional agents to Patient until Patient attains a predetermined plane of anesthesia; amplifying and digitizing brain waves of Patient before and after administering step to generate first set of digital data; amplifying and digitizing brain waves of Patient during a medical procedure to generate second set of digital data; computing separate trajectories for at least two different indices of an anesthetic state of Patient during the medical procedure using a comparison of first and second sets (the indices including Depth Index (DI)&#x2014;a depth of anesthesia, Memory Index (MI)&#x2014;an ability to form and store memories, and Pain Index (PI)&#x2014;sensitivity to pain); and determining an amount of at least one of the interventional agents to be delivered to Patient as a function of the trajectories, the interventional agents include anesthetic, analgesic and/or amnesic agents corresponding to DI, MI and/or PI trajectories.

Described is a system and method which includes the following steps. A plurality of interventional agents are administered to a patient until the patient attains a predetermined plane of anesthesia. Brain waves of the patient are amplified and digitized before and after the administering step to generate a first set of digital data. A system for providing anesthesia to a patient, includes a plurality of electrodes, a first arrangement allowing an operator to administer anesthesia to the patient until the patient has attained a selected plane of anesthesia and a second arrangement coupled to the electrodes for amplifying and digitizing brain waves of the patient after the patient has been anesthetized, before the medical procedure has been begun to obtain a first set of digital data, the second arrangement amplifying and digitizing ongoing brain waves of the patient during the medical procedure to provide a second set of digital data in combination with a third arrangement analyzing the first and second sets of digital data in at least one of a time domain and a frequency domain, a fourth arrangement computing from the data analysis separate trajectories for at least two different indices of a state of the patient during the medical procedure, the indices being selected from a group including a Depth Index (DI), a Memory Index (MI) and a Pain Index (PI), a fifth arrangement providing control signals when any of the trajectories indicates that the patient is deviating from the selected plane of anesthesia and a sixth arrangement automatically adjusting two different anesthetic agents administered to the patient based on the control signal to restore the patient to the selected plane of anesthesia.
