A process for preparing a surfactant, useful for dispersing tackifier resins in aqueous media, comprises reacting an &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride, or an ester thereof, with a terpene- or hydrocarbon-based resin to form an adduct, then reacting the adduct with a polyalkylene polyol to yield the surfactant. In a related embodiment, the surfactant is subsequently functionalized. Also disclosed are surfactants prepared using a disclosed process; compositions comprising a disclosed surfactant and a tackifier resin; aqueous dispersions comprising a disclosed surfactant; tackifier resin and water; adhesive compositions comprising a disclosed aqueous dispersion and a polymer latex; and pressure sensitive adhesive overlays prepared using a disclosed adhesive composition.

Terpene resin and hydrocarbon resin-based surfactants and aqueous dispersion of tackifier resins

A process for preparing a surfactant, useful for dispersing tackifier resins in aqueous media, comprises reacting an &#x3b1;&#x3b2;-unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride, or an ester thereof, with a terpene- or hydrocarbon-based resin to form an adduct, then reacting the adduct with a polyalkylene polyol to yield the surfactant. Terpene resin-and hydrocarbon resin-based surfactants and aqueous dispersion of tackifier resins

Processes for increasing the strength of cellulosic fibers are carried out by contacting relatively dry cellulosic fibers with an agent in particulate or vapor form comprising a carboxylic acid cyclic anhydride at an elevated temperature for a time sufficient to significantly increase the bonding strength of the fibers. The treated fibers bond more readily to one another and they also hold wet and dry strength aids more strongly. Furthermore, the treatment does not significantly affect the internal chemical structure of the fibers so that paper made from the fibers exhibits overall improved dimensional stability.

Method for increasing the strength of a paper or paperboard product

The specification discloses a polyphenylene oxide delivery system for use in preparing an A-B-A block copolymer adhesive formulation having an increased service temperature. The delivery system comprises a preblend of polyphenylene oxide (PPO) resin having a T.sub.g within the range of from about 150.degree. to about 210.degree. C. and a B-block compatible resin. The PPO/B-block resin preblend enables introduction of more PPO into the composition thereby increasing the service temperature of the adhesive formulation.

Polyphenylene oxide delivery system for adhesive compositions

Repulpable, hot melt adhesives which are composed of approximately equal amounts of a tackifier (having an acid number greater than about 70) and a hydrophilic wax, with up to 9% of polymer. The hot melt compositions can contain up to 17% of polymer when the tackifier has a higher acid number of about 140.

A method for the preparation of an adhesive with an improved high temperature shear strength is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of blending a styrene homopolymer with a tackifier resin to form a resin blend and combining the resin blend with an elastomer. An adhesive with improved high temperature shear strength is also disclosed.

High shear tackifier resins

Inert esters of rosin and a primary polyhydric alcohol, such as rosin-pentaerythritol esters, are modified by reacting commercially available rosin esters which contain residual hydroxyl groups with a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid or anhydride, for example, acetic anhydride or propionic anhydride, to substantially completely esterify the residual hydroxyl groups. The resulting inert, completely esterified rosin esters, when formulated with non-polar natural rubber or SBR in adhesive systems, results in a time-stable tack value not available with conventional rosin esters.

Inert rosin esters and process for preparing the same

A urethane-modified ester of rosin and a primary polyhydric alcohol has negligible hydroxyl content and is particularly useful as a polar tackifier in an adhesive composition made with a polar elastomer. The modified ester is prepared by reacting a rosin ester, for example, a rosin-pentaerythritol ester which contains some residual hydroxyl groups with a suitable isocyanate or diisocyanate.

There is provided a novel catalyst system and a process for polymerizing olefins by adding the same incrementally to said catalyst system consisting essentially of an aluminum halide and an organo germanium halide or alkoxide in an inert solvent while controlling the temperature of reaction in the range of -30.degree. C to +30.degree. C, drowning the polymerization mixture in water, separating the organic phase therefrom, removing the solvent therefrom, and recovering a solid polymer in good yield.

Novel catalyst system

There is provided a process for cationically polymerizing or co-polymerizing batchwise or continuously .alpha.-pinene by adding .alpha.-pinene either alone or in admixture with other terpene monomers, incrementally to a catalyst system comprising an aluminum halide and an antimony halide in the presence or absence of a (lower)alkyl, alkenyl or aralkyl halide in an inert solvent while controlling the temperature of reaction in the range of -30.degree. C. to +30.degree. C., drowning the polymerization mixture in water, separating the organic phase therefrom, removing the solvent therefrom and recovering a solid polymer in good yield.
