A rotating machine includes a shaft, a first impeller wheel, and a second impeller wheel. The rotating machine also includes a first seal assembly including a first carbon ring disposed about the shaft, with the first carbon ring having a first carbon surface. The first seal assembly also includes a first mating ring disposed about the shaft, with the first mating ring having a first mating surface facing and configured to contact the first carbon surface. The rotating machine additionally includes a second seal assembly including a second carbon ring disposed about the shaft, with the second carbon ring having a second carbon surface. The second seal assembly also includes a second mating ring disposed about the shaft, with the second mating ring having a second mating ring surface facing and configured to contact the second carbon surface.

A turbocharger includes a shaft extending between first and second shaft ends. A turbine wheel is coupled to the first shaft end, and a bearing housing defines a bearing housing interior and is disposed about the shaft. A turbine housing defines a turbine housing interior and is disposed about the turbine wheel. A sealing assembly includes a case disposed about the shaft and extending between a first case end proximate to the turbine wheel and a second case end distal from the turbine wheel. The sealing assembly also includes a ring disposed between the shaft and the case such that the ring is unobstructed by the case radially between the shaft and the ring. The sealing assembly further includes a deformable component coupled to the second case end and to the ring, and is moveable with the ring to seal the bearing housing interior and the turbine housing interior.

A bearing assembly for supporting rotation of a shaft in a turbocharger includes an inner race extending along an axis. The inner race is configured to be coupled to the shaft. The bearing assembly also includes an outer race spaced radially from the inner race and a cage disposed radially between the inner race and the outer race. The bearing assembly further includes a rolling element disposed radially between the outer race and the inner race. The rolling element is disposed within the cage for supporting rotation of the shaft. The outer race defines a lubricant passageway configured to direct lubricant toward the cage.

A turbocharger includes a shaft, a compressor wheel, a turbine wheel, and a bearing assembly including an inner race, a first outer race spaced from the inner race, a second outer race spaced from the inner race, a first rolling element disposed between the first outer race and the inner race, and a second rolling element disposed between the second outer race and the inner race. The bearing assembly includes a first biasing member configured to bias the first outer race toward the second outer race and against the first rolling element, and preload the first rolling element with a preloading force, and a second biasing member configured to bias the second outer race toward the first outer race and against the second rolling element, and preload the second rolling element with a second preloading force. The first preloading force is different than the second preloading force.

A turbocharger includes a shaft, a compressor wheel, a turbine wheel, and a bearing assembly. The bearing assembly includes an inner race coupled to the shaft, and first and second outer races spaced radially from the inner race. The bearing assembly also includes a first rolling element disposed between the first outer race and the inner race, and a second rolling element disposed between the second outer race and the inner race. The bearing assembly further includes a first biasing member coupled to the first outer race and configured to bias the first outer race toward the second outer race and against the first rolling element to preload the first rolling element, and a second biasing member coupled to the second outer race and configured to bias the second outer race toward the first outer race and against the second rolling element to preload the second rolling element.

A turbocharger includes a shaft, a compressor wheel, and a seal assembly. The seal assembly includes a carbon ring having a carbon surface having a carbon ring inner diameter and a carbon ring outer diameter. The seal assembly also includes a mating ring having a mating surface facing the carbon surface of the carbon ring. The mating surface has a land portion configured to contact the carbon surface between a first mating diameter radially aligned with the carbon ring inner diameter and a second mating diameter radially aligned with the carbon ring outer diameter. The land portion has a land area between the first and second mating diameters. The mating surface defines a plurality of grooved portions. The plurality of grooved portions have a grooved area between the first and second mating diameters. A ratio of the land area to the grooved area is between 1.3 and 2.9.

A bearing housing for a turbocharger is disclosed. The bearing housing includes a first end proximate to a turbine wheel of the turbocharger and a second end proximate to a compressor wheel of the turbocharger. The bearing housing further includes a central chamber disposed between the first end and the second end and configured to house, at least, the shaft. The bearing housing further includes an oil drain disposed radially outward of the shaft and configured for directing oil out of the bearing housing and an oil core disposed radially outward of the shaft and radially inward of the oil drain, the oil core configured for communicating oil towards the oil drain and having an inner wall. The bearing housing includes one or more strakes protruding radially inward from the inner wall, the one or more strakes configured to direct oil within the oil core towards the oil drain.

In a turbocharger for receiving exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine and for delivering compressed air to the internal combustion engine, a backplate may include a lubricant stall protrusion, such as a rib, may be placed in recirculation or collection recesses of the backplate to stall recirculating lubricant flow and direct the lubricant into a bearing housing lubricant core and drain to reduce an amount of lubricant proximate piston rings and leaking into a compressor housing of the turbocharger. When an lubricant deflector is used, the lubricant stall protrusion stalls recirculating lubricant that is outboard of the lubricant deflector, and may have an outer protrusion edge closely matching the outboard contour of the lubricant deflector to minimize a flow gap there between.

An engine turbocharger () includes a radially oriented oil deflector () that incorporates an oil guiding feature () to improve control of a continuous turbulent mass of oil being impelled against the deflector by an oil flinger (). The oil deflector () has a downwardly extending tongue () to assist in directing oil flow from a thrust bearing chamber. The feature (), formed on the tongue (), enhances otherwise gravitationally directed oil flow into an engine oil sump. The feature is vertically oriented, and redirects oil thrown axially and rotationally against the deflector, providing improved piston ring sealing through more efficient evacuation of oil from the thrust bearing chamber. The feature may be formed by stamping, as either an integral disruptive surface rib, or as an otherwise radially oriented flange protruding axially from the surface of the tongue. Such flange may be integral with, or otherwise attached to, the oil deflector tongue, as for example via welding.

In accordance with one aspect of the present disclosure, a rolling element bearing assembly is disclosed. The rolling element bearing assembly may be used in an electrically-assisted turbocharger. The bearing assembly includes an inner race having an outer diameter defining an inner raceway, an outer race having an outer diameter and an inner diameter, the outer-race inner diameter defining an outer raceway, a single row of rolling elements between the inner raceway and the outer raceway, and a squeeze-film damper integrated with the outer race to form a single component. The squeeze-film damper provides for a squeeze-film damper surface between the outer-race outer diameter and a housing.

A product may be provided for use with a turbocharging system. A housing may be configured to house a bearing. A shaft may extend through the bearing. A turbine wheel may be connected to one end of the shaft. The housing may include a wall forming an opening and defining a surface facing the opening. The bearing may have a segment extending into the opening and mating with the surface. The wall may include an oil spray groove opening through the surface and having an outlet directed at the shaft.

An apparatus includes a bearing housing, a shaft assembly that extends through the bearing housing along a shaft axis, an annular groove formed on the shaft assembly, and a piston ring assembly that is engaged with the bearing housing and extends into the groove of the shaft assembly. The piston ring assembly includes a first ring portion and a second ring portion. The first ring portion has a first contact face that is oriented at a non-perpendicular with respect to the shaft axis, and the second ring portion has a second contact face that is oriented at a non-perpendicular angle with respect to the shaft axis and is engageable with the first contact face.
