A superconducting motor including a rotor, a heat sink, and a bearing. The rotor includes a superconducting winding formed from a superconducting material. The heat sink is positioned within the superconducting motor to absorb heat produced by the superconducting motor. The bearing includes an inner race, an outer race, and a rolling element. The bearing rotatably supports the rotor and is thermally connected to each of the rotor and the heat sink to transfer heat from the rotor to the heat sink. The rolling element is formed from a material having, at 25 K, a thermal conductivity of 20 W/mK or more and an ultimate tensile strength of 650 MPa or more. The rolling element may be formed from a copper alloy.

High heat transfer cryogenic bearing

An electric machine including an annular armature assembly and a non-rotating annular field winding assembly coaxial with the armature assembly and separated by a gap from the armature assembly. The field winding assembly including a field coil support structure having an annular array of recesses formed therein and extending about the field coil support structure. The field winding assembly further including a plurality of superconducting coils, each disposed in a recess of the annular array of recesses. A generator and a method for generating electrical power are disclosed.

Field coil support structure and modular field coil design in a superconducting machine

A superconducting magnet apparatus includes a plurality of superconducting magnet coil sections connected in series and housed within a cryogenically cooled, vacuum container. A power source generates a current. A first lead is electrically connected to the superconducting magnet coil sections. A second lead is enclosed entirely within the vacuum container. The second lead has a first section and a second section, and the first section is electrically connected to the power source. The second section is electrically connected to the first lead, and rigidly connected to a linear displacement device enclosed entirely within the vacuum container. The linear displacement device linearly displaces the second section relative to the first section, so that the first section contacts the second section thereby electrically connecting the first and second sections, or by creating a gap between the first section and second section thereby electrically disconnecting the first section from the second section.

Superconducting magnet apparatus and method of operating same

A cryocooler assembly including at least one remotely driven cryocooler operable between an ON-state of operation and an OFF-state of operation and defining a first stage of the cryocooler assembly. A liquefaction cup in fluidic communication with a cryogenic fluid reservoir, wherein a plurality of conduits thermally couple the liquefaction cup to the fluid reservoir and define a second stage of the cryocooler assembly. The cryocooler assembly further including one or more of a valve, a gas/liquid switch, an actuating support arm and a heat pipe coupled to the second stage of the cryocooler assembly to remotely disconnect a heat path generated by the at least one remotely driven cryocooler between the first stage and the second stage during the OFF-state of operation. A superconducting generator including at least one remotely driven cryocooler assembly and method of operating a cooling assembly for a superconducting generator utilizing at least one remotely driven cryocooler assembly are disclosed.

An aircraft including a fuselage, a power generator configured to provide power to the aircraft, and at least one fuel tank for holding fuel for the power generator, and a fuel delivery assembly. The fuel tank is positioned in the fuselage and is configured to hold hydrogen fuel in a liquid phase. The fuel tank has a chamber for holding the hydrogen fuel and a fuel extraction line fluidly coupled to the chamber. The fuel extraction line extends from the fuel tank in a forward direction of the fuselage and at a downward angle relative to a centerline of the fuselage. The fuel delivery assembly is fluidly coupled to the fuel extraction line and fluidly connects the fuel tank to the power generator. The fuel delivery assembly is configured to provide the hydrogen fuel from the fuel tank to the power generator.

Onboard liquid hydrogen storage for a hydrogen aircraft

A method of manufacturing a lead assembly of a cryogenic system is provided. The method includes developing a three-dimensional (3D) model of a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger includes a plurality of channels extending longitudinally through the heat exchanger from the first end to the second end, the plurality of channels forming a plurality of thermal surfaces within the heat exchanger, the heat exchanger having a transverse cross section. The method further includes modifying the 3D model by at least one of reducing an area of the cross section and increasing the plurality of thermal surfaces. The method also includes additively manufacturing the heat exchanger using an electrically-conductive and thermally-conductive material according to the modified 3D model. Further, the method includes providing a high temperature superconductor (HTS) assembly that includes an HTS strip, and connecting the HTS assembly to the heat exchanger at the second end of the heat exchanger.

High temperature superconducting current lead assembly for cryogenic apparatus

The present disclosure relates to a cooling system that includes a superconducting unit and a reservoir configured to store liquid coolant to cool the superconducting unit. The cooling system also includes an auxiliary storage system that includes one or more storage tanks fluidly coupled to the reservoir. The auxiliary storage system is configured to provide additional coolant to the reservoir as well as receive and store coolant from the reservoir.

Auxiliary cryogen storage for magnetic resonance imaging applications

A superconducting generator includes an annular armature connectable to rotate with a rotating component of a wind turbine. A stationary annular field winding is coaxial to the armature and separated by a gap from the armature. The field winding includes superconducting coils, and there is a non-rotating support for the field winding. The non-rotating support is a torque tube. The torque tube is a member formed of a composite material, or a member formed of a plurality of segmented sections, a space frame or strut torque carrying assembly. The torque tube is connected to a thermal shield casing or a field winding housing.

The cryogenic transfer line assembly includes an induction tube communicatively coupled to a cryostat, a cryogenic transfer line having defined as a portion thereof a second portion of a bayonet coupling and a cryogenic transfer line coupling, The cryogenic transfer line coupling communicatively couples the induction tube and the cryogenic transfer line and has defined as a portion thereof a first portion of the bayonet coupling and a gate valve. The gate valve prevents the ingress of environmental air passing through the first portion of the bayonet coupling to a cryogenic fluid disposed within a cryogenic vessel of the cryostat upon disengagement of the cryogenic transfer line from the cryogenic transfer line coupling.

The superconducting generator further includes a stationary field disposed concentric to and radially outward from the armature.

An annular field of a superconducting generator includes a partial cryogenic shielding assembly and a superconducting field winding surrounded by a thermal shield. The thermal shield is surrounded by a housing defining an insulating vacuum enclosure. The annular field includes a torque tube assembly disposed within the housing and coupling the thermal shield to the housing. A blanket of multi-layer thermal insulation is disposed within the vacuum enclosure, extending generally between the housing and the thermal shield. The annular field further includes a partial cryogenic shielding assembly including a floating shield disposed within the vacuum enclosure, between the housing and the thermal shield. The floating shield extends only a portion of an overall length of the housing. The floating shield includes an insulative stack of multi-layer thermal insulation. A superconducting generator and a wind turbine utilizing the superconducting generator with improved partial shielding are disclosed.

Partial cryogenic shielding assembly in a superconducting generator and methods of assembling the same

A cooling system, an apparatus for producing hyperpolarized samples, where the apparatus includes the cooling system, and a method for assembling and using the cooling system are disclosed. The cooling system includes a cryogenic chamber, a cooling plate, a sample sleeve, a thermal switch, and an interposer. Also, the cryogenic chamber includes a cryogenic fluid and the cooling plate is disposed in the cryogenic chamber, in contact with the cryogenic fluid. Further, the sample sleeve is configured to receive a sample. The sample sleeve is at least partially inserted in the cryogenic chamber. The thermal switch is disposed between the cooling plate and the sample sleeve. Moreover, the interposer is disposed between at least one of (i) the thermal switch and the cooling plate and (ii) the thermal switch and the sample sleeve. The interposer includes a gallium indium tin alloy.

A wind turbine power generating system and method includes a tower, a hub, a plurality of blades connected to the hub, and a rotor connected to the hub. A superconducting generator is coupled to the rotor and includes a plurality of superconductive coils. A nacelle is mounted atop the tower, with the superconducting generator housed within the nacelle. An automatic ramp-down system is configured with the superconducting coils and includes an automatically activated energy dump circuit for current withdrawn from the superconductive coils in a ramp-down process prior to a quench. The energy dump circuit includes one or more heat dissipating loads, wherein each of the heat dissipating loads is mounted in thermal communication with one of the tower or the nacelle that act a thermal heat sink for dispersing heat from the loads.

System and method for auto-ramping and energy dump for a superconducting wind turbine generator

Methods and systems are provided for a sealing system for a dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) system. In one embodiment, a system comprises: a reservoir including an inlet opening; an outer tube; and a tapered seal shaped to seal against the inlet opening and the outer tube, the tapered seal including: a first section removably coupleable to a second section; and a through-hole formed by a first plurality of inner surfaces of both the first section and the second section, the through-hole shaped to encircle the outer tube. In this way, the tapered seal may be coupled around the fluid passage without inserting a tip of the fluid passage through the through-hole of the tapered seal, and a sterility of the system may be maintained.
