The implement is suppliable with a cooling medium through a cooling medium conduit in the handpiece; whereby the handpiece is detachably connectable with a current provider at its end which is distant from the implement, in which the current provider possesses electrical current supply contacts which are supplied with electrical current and which, upon the connection of the current provider with the handpiece, come into contact with current commutator or receiving contacts of the electric motor. An arrangement for imposing pressure on cleaning media and/or lubricants which are contained as maintenance media in the movable components of medical, particularly dental handpieces, wherein the maintenance medium is adapted to be placed under pressure by a pressure drive acting through an outlet opening of a housing which contains a motion drive for the movable handpiece components, the last mentioned being brought into connection with the outlet opening through an inlet opening in the handpiece. During this pressurization of the maintenance medium, the movable components of the handpiece are placeable into movement through the motion drive of the housing in such a manner, whereby engaging means of the motion drive which are accessible through the outlet opening of the housing can be brought into engagement with cooperating engaging means of the movable components of the handpiece which are accessible through the inlet opening. With respect to the engaging means of the motion drive, handpieces or handpiece components, in particular attachment heads, having different cooperating engaging means, can be attached to the outlet opening of the housing and maintained, and thereby place their movable components into motion. As a result of the arrangement a plurality of different engaging means for the motion drive, in a simple manner there can always be selected and placed in operation engaging means correlated with the cooperating means of the handpiece or handpiece component which is to be currently serviced.

A dental handpiece, consisting of a connector portion and an elongated, exchangeable gripping sleeve portion which is coupled to the connector portion so as to be rotatable about its axis, and which includes a treating implement arranged at the sleeve end distant from the connector portion. An incandescent lamp or lightbulb is eccentrically arranged within the handpiece, and a light conductor is located in the gripping sleeve portion and has its end remote from the connector portion directed towards the area of the implement, and whose end which is distant from the implement is suppliable with light from the incandescent lamp.

There is disclosed a dental handpiece which mounts a dental implement at one end thereof, drive means provided in the handpiece to operate the dental implement, a connection piece pivotally connected to an opposite end of the handpiece so as to permit relative rotation between the handpiece and the connection piece, means provided in the connection piece to enable a handpiece-supply line to be coupled therewith, a light source, and a light guide having a light-receiving end arranged to receive light from the light source and a light-emitting end arranged to direct light to a treatment region adjacent to the dental implement. In order to avoid any impediment to operation of the handpiece caused by the presence of the light guide, the light guide is arranged to extend within the handpiece and the connection piece. Further, the light guide is transversely divided into first and second guide portions in the region of the connection between the handpiece and the connection piece, and the first guide portion extends within the connection piece and terminates in the connection region between the handpiece and the connection piece, and the second guide portion extends from this connection region within the handpiece towards the implement end. To provide for transmission of light between the first and second guide portions, despite relative rotation taking place between the handpiece and the connection piece, a pair of light transmitting rings are provided, one being arranged in the connection piece to co-operate with the first guide portion and the other being arranged in the handpiece to co-operate with the second guide portion.

A dental handpiece, consisting of a connector portion and an elongated, exchangeable gripping sleeve portion coupled to the connector portion, including a treating implement arranged on the gripping sleeve end distant from the connector portion, wherein the connector portion incorporates a lightbulb or incandescent lamp, and the gripping sleeve portion includes a light conductor having the end thereof distant from the connector portions, directed towards the area of the implement, and whose end which is distant from the implement is suppliable with light from the incandescent lamp. The incandescent lamp will only burn when needed, but not when a gripping sleeve component without a light conductor is coupled to the connector portion, or even no gripping sleeve portion at all is present.

An arrangement for the dispensing of cleaning and/or lubricating media, which can be placed under pressure in a receptacle, as maintenance media to movable elements containing medical, and particularly dental handpieces. The maintenance medium is forced by means of a pressure drive out of a dispensing orifice of the receptacle through an inlet opening of the handpiece which is attached to the receptacle at the dispensing orifice and whereby, during the forcing of the maintenance medium into the movable elements of the handpiece, they are placeable into motion through a motion drive. The maintenance medium can be formed by liquid cleaning and/or lubricating media, for instance, such as oil. The arrangement of a separate power source, for the motion drive and for the pressure drive, in a simple and economical manner facilitates the motion drive as well as the pressure drive to be supplied with the required energy in a completely targeted manner by the current power source for a secure operation, so that neither the forcing out of the maintenance medium nor the action of the motion drive on the movable components of the handpiece are adversely influenced in any manner or could even be inhibited.
