A method for operating a navigational system, especially a navigational system for a motor vehicle, having a memory, a display unit and at least one operating element, map data being loaded from a map data memory into the memory; the map data being subdivided into first map data and second map data; the first map data including geometric data of edges of a map network stored as graphs, and the second map data including topological data and applications being carried out using the first and/or second map data loaded into the memory.

Method for operating a navigational system

A digital map with line features is stored on a storage medium into parcels, each covering a certain area of the map. A parcel has around it standard border a border region bounded by an inner border and an outer border. A line feature crossing the standard border between two neighboring parcels is only divided into two new line features if it completely crosses the border region, i.e. if it crosses the outer border of both neighboring parcels.

To supplement an electronic navigation system, for example associated with a locating map storing possible paths of a vehicle, two path sensors are provided, one (10) evaluating vehicle operating data and distance traveled, and the other (12) evaluating position of the vehicle with respect to the geomagnetic field. In accordance with the invention, and in order to eliminate drift errors of the vehicle operating sensor (10) and disturbances of the magnetic field sensed by the magnetic field sensor, the output signals from the vehicle operating sensor are differentiated to eliminate long-term drift, and the output signals from the field sensor are integrated to eliminate short disturbances, both the differentiation as well as the integration steps being carried out with respect to distance traveled and not with respect to time. The respectively differentiated and integrated signals are then combined in an adder (28) for application to a course or navigation computer of standard construction.
