The invention comprises the use of multiple-branch esters of the common formula A, formed from branch-chain carboxylic acids and branch-chain alcohols, as ingredients of cosmetic agents for the protection and care of human skin ##STR1## as well as cosmetic agents containing such branched esters of common formula A.

The cyclic Isolongifolanone ketals of the general formula A wherein the wavy lines mean .alpha.- and .beta.-configuration and R,R' mean radicals of hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, are new. With preference they are used either as odorants or as components of perfume compositions. They are manufactured from Isolongifolene which is itself produced from Longifolene as is well known. Isolongifolene is oxydized to Isolongifolene-3-on and this is reacted with aliphatic 1,2-diols in apolar solvents with the separation of water.

It has been found that .alpha.-campholenenitrile with formula A and .gamma.-campholenenitrile with formula B ##STR1## are excellent for use as fragrances, especially as components of fragrance mixtures for perfuming cosmetics or other consumer goods. The two nitriles can be used individually or in mixture with each other.

4,4,7-trimethyl-3,4,7,8-tetrahydro-2(6H)-naphthalen-one is obtained by an elimination reaction from 3-oxo-.alpha.-ionol by way of direct addition thereof to a solution of a protonic acid in an inert solvent at an elevated temperature, or following its conversion into a low-carbon alkyl ester, particularly acetate, by way of the treatment of the latter, preferably with sodium acetate, in a polar non-protonic solvent at 150.degree.14 300.degree. C., wherein the output can be increased by raising the temperature of reaction. The product of the process is suitable, in pure form or as mixed with simultaneously produced 3,5,5-trimethyl-4-butenylidene-cyclo-hex-2-en-1-one, as an odiferous substance or as a fragrant substance for foods and tobacco.

The .beta.,.gamma.-unsaturated 2,2,3-trimethylcyclopent-3-enyl derivatives of formula I ##STR1## where R may be methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl or butyl, the wavy line characterizes geometric isomers and the broken lines characterize stereoisomers. These compounds can be produced by reduction of the aldol condensation products of campholene aldehyde and aliphatic aldehydes using sodium borohydride at raised temperatures. The compounds can be used to individually or as a mixture with the relevant .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated alcohols as odorants or as an ingredient of perfume oils for cosmetic and technical consumer goods.

C-8-substituted 1,5-dimethyl-bicyclo[3.2.1]octane-8-ols having the general formula I ##STR1## wherein R is a lower open chained or cyclic alkyl- alkenyl- or alkinyl group having up to 6 carbon atoms and the wavy line at the C-8 atom means epimeric forms, the process for producing these compounds and their use as odorants and constituents of parfume composition for cosmetic and industrial parfuming or essential oils and flavoring agents.

Process for imparting, enhancing or modifying the odorous note in perfumes, perfume compositions, artificial essential oils, flavoring agents or flavor compositions to a 'blackcurrant' note, which comprises adding thereto 1.5-dimethyl-8-hydroximino-bicyclo[3.2.1]octane ##STR1## Wherein the wavy line denotes geometric isomers, at a concentration of at least 1 part per million by weight based on the total weight of the thus obtained material.

A process for imparting, enhancing or modifying the flowery odorous note in perfumes, perfume compositions or artificial essential oils, for use in a perfume composition, a perfumed article, a cologne, a foodstuff, an alcoholic or nonalcoholic beverage, a toothpaste, a medicinal product or a chewing gum, comprising the step of adding an organoleptic property modifying quantity of 1,1-Di(C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl)-2-phenylethan derivatives of formula A, wherein R is a formyl-, hydroxymethyl-, formoxymethyl-, acetoxymethyl- or a nitrilo group and the total number of carbon atoms in both alkyl substituents together is at most 8. ##STR1## .
