Preparation of pure N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone

3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrans of the formula I ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is C.sub.4 -C.sub.20 -alkyl, C.sub.4 -C.sub.20 -alkoxyalkyl, aryl or C.sub.7 -C.sub.20 -arylalkyl, or is aryl or C.sub.7 -C.sub.20 -arylalkyl which bears from one to three substituents selected from the group consisting of halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkoxy or C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -haloalkoxy, R.sup.2 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, R.sup.3 is aryl, or aryl bearing from one to three substituents selected from the group consisting of halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkoxy or C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -haloalkoxy, or the radical ##STR2## where R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, R.sup.7 is phenyl or benzoyl, or phenyl or benzoyl bearing from one to three substituents selected from the group consisting of halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -haloalkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkoxy and C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -haloalkoxy, or a five- or six-membered heterocycle containing one or two oxygen atoms and which is either unsubstituted or substituted by one to three C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkyl groups or one C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -spirocycloalkyl, and l, m and n are 0 or 1, and their use for combating pests.
