A process for the manufacture of cooked cereals or dry pet food by preparing a mixture of water and a dry premix mainly comprising cereal flour or semolina, and pressing the mixture, with the aid of a gear pump, firstly through a heat exchanger wherein it is cooked and then through an extrusion die to form an extruded product. Also, an apparatus for carrying out the process and a product obtainable by the process.

Extrusion process, apparatus and product

A composite consumable food product in the form of a section of an extruded strand of a first foodstuff impregnated into a second foodstuff. Prior to extrusion of the strand in a twin screw extruder, the first foodstuff is a liquid or a pasty consumable substance, such as a syrup, while the second foodstuff is a plasticized consumable substance, such as a cereal base. The first and second foodstuffs are preferably processed in separate sections of the extruder before a taste or flavor perceptible amount of the first foodstuff is introduced into and uniformly mixed with the second foodstuff prior to extrusion through a die. The resultant extruded strand is typically cut into sections to obtain the final product.

Impregnated composite extrusion product

A process for manufacturing an expanded cereal with the overall shape of an array of touching balls and an extrusion die and an extruder for use with the process. The die includes a feed ring for receiving material from an extruder, a cylindrical distribution chamber having a front wall and rear wall which includes the feed ring, and an array of parallel extrusion tubes provided in the front wall of the distribution chamber. The feed ring is in communication with the array of parallel extrusion tubes through the distribution chamber. The distribution chamber also includes a cylindrical distribution insert that extends axially from the center of the feed ring towards the front wall but spaced from the array of extrusion tubes. The process involves cooking and extruding a mixture of starchy material, sugar, oil, and water in a cooker-extruder and forcing the cooked material through the extrusion die.

Extrusion die

An extrusion die for making shaped extrudate products has structure which defines a central duct which is convergent from a duct inlet opening to a duct outlet opening and has structure which defines a tubular extrusion duct co-axial with the central duct and which also is convergent from a duct inlet opening to a duct outlet opening. A feed diaphragm member has a portion which converges to an opening which opens to a distribution chamber which diverges so that substance being extruded is distributed to the central and tubular ducts. Diaphragms are provided in the ducts to delimit passage of extrudate substance into the ducts. Additionally, members are provided for altering the position of the central duct and its duct outlet relative to the second duct member and its outlet.

A process for manufacturing a composite consumable product by double extrusion, wherein a liquid or pasty consumable substance is prepared in a first section of a twin-screw extruder, a plasticizable consumable substance is cooked-extruded in a second section of the twin-screw extruder, wherein the first and second sections are separated dynamically, to provide at least one strand of a cooked-extruded mass that is cut into pieces. The liquid or pasty consumable substance is added to the cooked-extruded mass to provide pieces of a composite consumable product.

An extrusion die assembly has a body member which rotatably houses a barrel member which provides a tubular passage. The body member has an inlet channel for passage of a plasticized, especially edible, substance to the barrel member tubular passage which extends from a junction with the body member to at least one outlet channel. A rotary seal is provided at a junction between the body member and barrel member.

Extrusion cooked coextruded food products having a cereal-based outer envelope in a thermoplastic state are cut by passing the product between two parallel counter-rotating cylinder surfaces which define male and female impression elements configured and positioned so that upon rotation, the impression elements of one surface converge with the elements of the other surface in a male to female relation for cutting the product into discrete pieces.
