The present disclosure relates to abrasive material delivery systems for liquid jet cutting systems. The abrasive material delivery systems can include a valve configured to adjust an inflow of abrasive material into the abrasive material delivery system from a source of abrasive material. The systems can include a chamber downstream of the valve and configured to receive the inflow of abrasive material from the valve. The systems can include a metering component configured to control an outflow of abrasive from the chamber to a cutting head of the liquid jet cutting system. In some embodiments, the systems include a sensor configured to monitor movement of a top surface of a portion of abrasive material within the chamber as the top surface moves through the chamber; and a processing device operably connected to the sensor and configured to determine an abrasive flow rate through the metering component based on a speed of the top surface as monitored by the sensor.

Measuring abrasive flow rates in a conduit

An abrasive waterjet system in accordance with an embodiment of the present technology includes a cutting head, a catcher downstream from the cutting head, and a conveyance configured to carry slurry including abrasive material and liquid collected from the catcher toward the cutting head. The cutting head includes a jet-forming orifice and a mixing chamber downstream from the jet-forming orifice. The cutting head also includes a slurry inlet through which the mixing chamber receives slurry including abrasive material and liquid collected from the catcher. The abrasive waterjet system can be configured for substantially closed-loop recycling of wet abrasive material. This can be useful, for example, to increase abrasive material utilization efficiency and to decrease abrasive material disposal costs. These and/or other benefits may be realized both in the context of low pressure abrasive waterjet systems and in the context of high pressure abrasive waterjet systems.

Recirculation of wet abrasive material in abrasive waterjet systems and related technology

Various embodiments of abrasive jet cutting systems are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, an abrasive jet system includes a cutting head configured to receive abrasives and pressurized fluid to form an abrasive jet. The system also includes an abrasive source configured to store abrasives that are supplied to the cutting head, as well as a fluid source configured to store fluid that is supplied to the cutting head. The system further includes a gas source configured to store pressurized gas that is selectively supplied to the cutting head. When supplied to the cutting head, the pressurized gas can advantageously affect, such as by at least partially diffusing, the abrasive jet.

Systems for abrasive jet piercing and associated methods

Abrasive-delivery apparatuses for use in abrasive-jet systems and associated apparatuses, systems, and methods are disclosed. An abrasive-delivery apparatus configured in accordance with a particular embodiment includes a first funnel segment and a second funnel segment downstream from the first funnel segment. The first funnel segment can have a first inlet, a first outlet, and a first interior region extending between the first inlet and the first outlet. Similarly, the second funnel segment can have a second inlet, a second outlet, and a second interior region extending between the second inlet and the second outlet. The first interior region can have a first inward taper toward the first outlet, and the second interior region can have a second inward taper toward the second outlet. The second inward taper can be steeper than the first inward taper when the abrasive-delivery apparatus is vertically oriented.

Abrasive-delivery apparatuses for use with abrasive materials in abrasive-jet systems and related apparatuses, systems, and methods

Particle delivery apparatuses for use in abrasive-jet systems and associated apparatuses, systems, and methods are disclosed. A particle delivery apparatus configured in accordance with a particular embodiment includes a cutting head, a gas inlet, and a control junction. An abrasive delivery path extends from a particle hopper toward the cutting head. A gas flow path extends from the gas inlet toward the cutting head. The control junction is configured to collect abrasive particles in a pile that blocks a flow of abrasive particles along the abrasive delivery path. The pile forms when a gas flow rate through a free space around the pile and a pressure differential between the hopper and the abrasive delivery path downstream from the control junction are insufficient to partially or entirely displace the pile.

Particle delivery apparatuses including control junctions for use in abrasive-jet systems and related apparatuses, systems, and methods

Systems and methods for fluidizing an abrasive particulate material for an abrasive water jet are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, the abrasive material is delivered to a metering orifice in a distributor. Pressurized pulses of air can be directed around a circumference of the distributor to at least partially fluidize the particulate material to facilitate the material passing through the metering orifice. From the metering orifice, the abrasive particulate material is entrained in a water jet for a cutting procedure or other suitable application.

Systems and methods for fluidizing an abrasive material

Particle-delivery devices, abrasive jet systems, and associated devices, systems, and methods are disclosed herein. In certain aspects, the particle-delivery devices can include an elongated fluidizing chamber and a metering assembly. The metering assembly can include a particle flow path extending from the fluidizing chamber. The metering assembly can also include a carrier-gas passage extending to an injection orifice proximate the fluidizing chamber. The metering assembly can be configured to inject carrier gas into the fluidizing chamber to fluidize particles within the fluidizing chamber. Fluidizing the particles at different carrier-gas pressures and/or flow rates can change the rate of particle delivery. For example, the metering assembly can include a metering opening and a regulator configured to change a steady-state pressure and/or flow rate of carrier gas entering the fluidizing chamber. Systems disclosed herein can include a controller configured to change a flow rate of particles through the metering opening.

Particle-delivery in abrasive-jet systems

Embodiments of abrasive jet piercing and/or cutting devices are described herein. In some embodiments, a piercing device includes a holding or positioning device coupling a mixing tube to a secondary tube. The holding device has one or more passages extending to at least an intermediate portion of the piercing device. The one or more passages allow air to contact or mix with an abrasive waterjet as it travels through the piercing device. In some embodiments, a cutting device includes two plates configured so as to form a slot between the two plates. The cutting device can be placed directly on a workpiece, and an abrasive waterjet can be directed at the workpiece through the slot. An abrasive waterjet system utilizing the piercing and cutting devices disclosed herein can pierce holes and cut slots in materials that have reduced hole diameters and kerf widths, respectively.
