A method of operating a machine tool, e.g., an electrical discharge machine, and a machine tool system with a machine, e.g. an electrical discharge machine, for machining a workpiece may include numerous configurable modules (DRIVE; GEN; CONTROL) to perform at least one of controlling, monitoring and carrying out of the machining of a workpiece. The modules (DRIVE; GEN; CONTROL) are arranged on the machine and are linked by a data network to a node for at least one of sending data to the node and receiving data from the node.

The invention relates to a method and a generator for generating a time sequence of discharge pulses separated from each other by pulse pauses for electrical discharge machining. At least two pulse capacitors are discharged each in the form of a partial pulse into the spark gap for forming together a discharge pulse. A discharge pulse having a predetermined waveform is selected from a plurality of discharge pulses having differing predetermined waveforms. The discharge of the at least two pulse capacitors is controlled such that the selected discharge pulse is generated with the predetermined waveform.

Method and generator for electrical discharge machining

The invention relates to a method and generator for generating a time sequence of EDM pulses having a predefined ignition voltage for electrical discharge machining. An AC voltage is generated from a DC voltage, furnished by a bipolar current source. The AC voltage is applied to an isolating transformer disposed between the bipolar current source and the spark gap. A first pulse capacitor is charged by the bipolar current source to a voltage corresponding to the ignition voltage. The ignition voltage provided by the isolating transformer is switched with a selected polarity to the spark gap.

The invention relates to a method and a generator for generating a time sequence of discharge pulses for EDM machining wherein a pulse capacitor () for generating the discharge pulse is charged with a charging voltage (U_chrg) and then discharged into the spark gap. The invention pertains to a method and a device for die sinking and wire-cutting workpieces by means of electrical discharge machining. A machine frame (10) as well as a worktank (9) and a lower guide head (5) form a stationary unit referred to the main axis directions X, Y. The workpiece (2) is immersed in the worktank (9) and moved in the horizontal plane by means of the X/Y main axis drive (14). An upper guide head (4) also forms part of the stationary unit or can be moved by means of a Z drive (16) and/or a U/V drive (15). The lower guide head may also be designed such that it can be vertically moved by means of a lower Z drive (17). This concept is particularly suitable for producing microscopic components by means of electrical discharge machining and as a multielectrode machine that processes workpieces simultaneously or sequentially.

A method of and a spark erosion apparatus for fine machining by spark erosion of a workpiece (2) with a wire electrode (1) eliminates very efficiently process interruptions caused by short circuits, such that at least one gap parameter is continuously monitored for the purpose of detecting a short circuit; when a short circuit is detected, the forward motion of the electrode (1) is arrested at the point (K) where the short circuit occurred; if the short circuit persists, the electrode (1) is moved away from the workpiece (2) to an intervention point (M)--in a direction perpendicular to the path (6) used for trim cutting; at the intervention point (M), one or several measures to eliminate the short circuit are executed once or several times; and after it has been detected that the short circuit is eliminated, the electrode (1) is moved back to the point (K) where the short circuit occurred, whereafter normal machining continues.

Method and apparatus for fine machining with spark erosion using a wire

A method of precision electric-discharge machining carried out in apparatus of moderately high precision and stability with an electrode in the form of a wire. The object is a surface as smooth as the surface that can be obtained with the more expensive very high-precision apparatus. The contour of work that has already been roughed out at least once is accordingly exploited as a geometrical reference for at least one finishing cut. The gap is maintained constant by fine adjustments.

The pulse generator for electric discharge machining contains neither load resistors nor magnetic components. The pulse current is continuously detected by a current sensor 4 and this measured value fed to a control circuit 5. Via switch elements 10, 11 and the spark-circuit inductance 3, the pulse current is developed in accordance with a desired value called for by the system connection 6. At the pulse end, the energy present in the spark-circuit inductance 3 is discharged into capacitors 37, 38 and from there recuperated in the source of dc voltage 1 or, upon the next current pulse, in the spark circuit 2, 3. This is possible with only two switch elements 10, 11. One terminal of the source of the dc voltage 1 is common with an electrode of the spark path. By means of further switch elements 12, 13, it is also possible to control the no-load voltage and/or the current impulse slope. This generator is particularly small, light and inexpensive and is of very high efficiency. It can easily be integrated in larger systems and several modules can be fed from a single source of dc voltage 1.

A method of machining workpieces, particularly for wire electroerosion machining in which a machining gap is formed between the machined piece and the workpiece, a machined piece is cut out of the workpiece, and the machined piece is secured against dropping out, whereby the machined piece is secured by at least one separate securing means arranged in the machining gap. A numerical control system performs path interpolation calculations for the control of highly dynamic processes having different path contour geometries wherein a vector having a length L connects in linear form a first point P1 to a second point P2. These points are located in three dimensional Cartesian space having axes x, y, and z. Length L has Cartesian components X, Y and Z and is subject to an angular rotation C about the z axis. The system also has process parameters S and K wherein S is an address identifying the parameter to be modified and K identifies the modified parameter value. A coarse interpolator outputs the path elements L, X, Y, Z and C and the parameters S and K between path increments as course interpolations which are a function of the path contour geometry but are independent of time frame. A fine interpolator having an intermediate memory is connected downstream from the course interpolator. The fine interpolator outputs the path elements and parameters as fine interpolations. The intermediate memory receives, for intermediate storage and subsequent processing, the course interpolations from the course interpolator. There is no joint fixed grid frame for data exchange between the two interpolators. Control means operates in time independence from the coarse interpolator and controls the fine interpolator with its memory to perform the fine interpolation steps and the outputting of parameters S and K in real time.

Numerical control system for highly dynamic processes

A current supply device for movable electrodes of spark erosion machines comprises a plurality of individual contacts and includes in leads connecting the contacts with a current generator, electrical components in the form of pulse transformers for a pairwise negative feedback of partial currents or additional impedances stepped according to a mathematical series for uniform current distribution over the individual contacts. The current supply device is particularly suitable for the current transmission of high energy short pulses, such as are used for an erosive wire cutting. The current supply device operates in an almost wear-free manner and can also fulfill the function of guide for the electrode.

Current supply device for movable electrodes of spark erosion machines

A coarse interpolator is adapted for use in a numerical control system for performing path interpolation calculations for the control of highly dynamic processes. These processess have different path contour geometries wherein a vector having a length L connects in linear form a first point P1 to a second point P2. These points are located in three dimensional Cartesian space having axes X, Y, and Z, Length L has Cartesian components X, Y and Z and is subject to an angular rotation C about the z axis. The interpolator responds to a group of predetermined vector lengths, starting with the maximum length, in order to calculate the path elements L, X, Y, Z and C for the maximum length vector. A path error E is then determined for the path elements so calculated. The error E is then compared with a praedetemined maximum error value. If the error E does not exceed the maximum value, the calculated path elements are outputted. If the error E exceeds the maximum value, the path elements for the vector which has the length next shorter to the vector of maximum length are then calculated. These operations are repeated until the path elements calculated for a vector result in a path error which does not exceed the maximum value and these path elements can be outputted. The distance between the outputted path elements and the end point of the path contour is then determined and the coarse interpolator stops interpolating when the distance has a zero value.

An electroerosion process and apparatus are used to produce crude electrodes which are shaped thereafter into finished form by wire cutting erosion. The finished electrodes are used in subsequent countersinking of workpieces by electroerosion.

Process and apparatus for employing electroerosion

A pulse generator for spark-erosive metal working contains a charge regulator circuit for charging a storage capacitor. A storage capacitor is sinusoidally discharged across a switching device to a spark gap. Charging always occurs in a defined manner independently of the preceding pulses, so that uniform pulses can be generated. The storage capacitor is charged with an energy excess of required for discharge and the energy still remaining after spark discharge is recovered in a d.c. voltage source. The switching device (3) is non-conductive only when the discharge current has substantially decayed.
