A polyaxial screwdriver for inserting a bone screw in a vertebra. A polyaxial bone screw assembly includes a coupling element. When a screw engaging end of the polyaxial screwdriver is lowered on the head of the bone screw, the complimentary surfaces of the screw engaging end of the screwdriver and the head of the screw self-align. A ratchet mechanism formed in the screwdriver provides progressive and automatic locking of the polyaxial screwdriver to the coupling element and prevents the accidental unthreading from the coupling element. In another embodiment of the polyaxial screwdriver, a collet slides over the outside surface of the upper end of the coupling element and locks on to the coupling element. In yet another embodiment of a polyaxial screwdriver, the outer sleeve of the polyaxial screwdriver has a split end that securely engages the coupling element.

An insertion instrument is configured to eject at least one anchor body into respective target locations, and subsequently apply a predetermined tensile force at least one actuation member of the at least one anchor member so as to actuate the at least one anchor body from a first configuration to a second expanded configuration. The insertion instrument can include a tension assembly that applies the predetermined tensile force to the at least one actuation member. The predetermined tensile force can be defined by a distance of travel, a predetermined failure force of a fuse, or a combination of distance of travel and a predetermined failure force of a fuse.

A universal drill guide system includes a universal drill guide, interchangeable drill tubes, and interchangeable drill bits. Each interchangeable drill tube corresponds to one of the interchangeable drill bits, and can be detachably coupled to the universal drill guide. A cannulated drill with K-wire retention features a drill bit with a retention mechanism that prevents axial advancement of a K-wire during drilling. A drill removal tool includes a drill remover that can be placed around a drill bit to remove it from bone after a hole is drilled, while leaving a K-wire in place in the bone. A bone screw driver with K-wire retention includes a shaft that can be passed over a K-wire, a distal end for attachment to a cannulated bone screw, and a K-wire retention module for preventing advancement of the K-wire as the screw driver drives the cannulated bone screw into bone.

A plate holder instrument includes a base and a clamp. The clamp is displaceable relative to the base in a longitudinal direction and forms a plate receiving recess with the base. The clamp is displaceable between a released position to allow a bone plate to be loaded into and removed from the plate receiving recess, and a clamped position to lock a plate in the plate receiving recess. An actuator is displaceable relative to the base in a first direction to move the clamp to the released position and a second direction to move the clamp to the clamped position. The plate holder instrument can be combined with one or more surgical instruments, bone plates, screws, tools, taps, depth gauges, screw drivers and/or other accessories as a kit.

A system for attaching first and second spine fixation elements at a predetermined angle relative to each other to first and second locations of a vertebra, respectively includes first and second guide arms pivotally connected to each other at a first pivot point and configured to pivot around a pivot axis passing through the first pivot point, and first and second guide tubes passing through first and second elongated through-bore openings formed in the first and second guide arms, respectively, and forming an X-structure as they exit the first and second through-bore openings.

An implantable spinous process fixation device includes an elongated component, top and bottom pivoting wing components, arranged opposite and parallel to the elongated component and separated from it by a spacer. First and second spinous processes of first and second adjacent vertebras are clamped between a top portion of the elongated component and the top pivoting wing and between a bottom portion of the elongated component and the bottom pivoting wing, respectively, by pivoting the top and bottom pivoting wings toward the top and bottom portions of the elongated component. The clamping of the spinous processes stabilizes the positions of the adjacent vertebras and prevents them from moving relative to each other.

A bone staple () for securing a first bone region (A) to a second bone region (B) includes a staple body () having a first leg section (), a second leg section (), and a connector section (). The first leg section () is insertable into the first bone region (A). The second leg section () is insertable into the second bone region (B). The connector section () includes a deformable region (A) that is movable from a first configuration (A) in which the leg sections () () are spaced apart a first distance () and a second configuration (B) in which the leg sections () () are spaced apart a second distance () that is less than the first distance (). In one embodiment, compression of the deformable region (A) causes the deformable region (A) to move from the first configuration (A) to the second configuration (B). As a result of this design, the bone staple () can easily be moved from the first configuration (A) to the second configuration (B). The deformable region (A) can be substantially square ring shaped and can define a region aperture (D) that is substantially square in the first configuration (A). Further, the deformable region (A) can be substantially oval ring shaped and the region aperture (D) can be generally rectangular shaped in the second configuration (B).

A spinal fixation element includes a screw and a washer. The screw comprises an elongated body of a first diameter and the body includes a threaded portion at a distal end and a semispherical head of a second diameter at a proximal end. The second diameter is larger than the first diameter. The washer comprises a semispherical through opening of a third diameter at the top, of a fourth diameter in the middle and of a fifth diameter at the bottom. The third diameter is slightly smaller than the second diameter, the fourth diameter is slightly larger than the second diameter and the fifth diameter is smaller than the second diameter. The washer surrounds the semispherical head, is non-removably attached to the semispherical head and is rotatable and positionable at an angle relative to the elongated body.
