A direction-finding co-linear antenna is provided by collinearly aligning an exposed reference antenna with a primary antenna that is surrounded by a dielectric sleeve with a predetermined thickness and the reference and primary antennas are separated by a ground plane. The direction-finding co-linear antenna provides a simple, light-weight and inexpensive arrangement with fewer antennas and reduced antenna spacing that avoids unwanted detection because of a smaller electronic footprint that consists of the area of a single antenna plus a few inches of dielectric material in the sleeves rather than four widely spaced antennas positioned in an array. The direction-finding co-linear antenna apparatus also requires less electronic processing because the antenna only needs to address the RF from two antennas rather than from four or five antennas in a conventional array arrangement. The present invention also encompasses a direction-finding co-linear antenna system and a method for determining the unknown location of a signal transmission source with a co-linear direction-finding antenna.

Co-linear antenna for direction finding

A spectrum analyzer includes a resonator board that in turn has a substrate and a plurality of resonators. Each resonator may include a first segment that includes a first segment discontinuity and that may also define a boundary and a second segment that has a second segment discontinuity. The second segment may be spaced from the first segment and wherein the second segment is disposed within the boundary defined by the first segment. The resonator board may also include a plurality of wires each of which may be generally parallel to each other and each having a resonator interposed therebetween.

A piezoelectrically controlled superconducting switch is provided for use in superconducting devices and piezoelectric devices. This switch includes a substrate, a superconductor which is bonded to the substrate, and a piezoelectric subassembly which has a load applicator and voltage source for straining the superconductor and for changing its superconductor curve of resistivity versus temperature.

A yokeless magnetic circuit composed of a permanent magnet shell having a lenoidal-cavity within which a working field is generated. The permanent magnet shell has a conical permanent end magnet adjacent each of its ends to insure that the surface at each of its ends is equipotential between the radial periphery of the permanent magnet shell and the axial centerpoint of the solenoidal cavity. The height of the conical end magnets directly depends of the magnetization and thickness of the permanent magnet shell and whether the internal field is uniform, gradient or variable.

A microstrip circuit having a plurality of coplanar microstrips mounted on a common dielectric substrate. A planar circulator is coupled to a junction of the microstrips. The circulator includes a ferrite disc which lies in the plane of the substrate. The circulator also includes a biasing permanent magnet in the form of a planar, toroidal-shaped magnet having magnetic sections that are embedded in the dielectric substrate. The magnetic sections from a split cylinder that encircles the ferrite material while permitting the microstrips to pass therethrough.

Magnetic circuit losses due to unnecessary magnetic fields are greatly curtailed or eliminated relative to the permanent magnet structures of electric machinery, without employing a conventional shunt or pole pieces. At least one coaxial cylinder of magnetic material is included in each permanent magnet structure of the invention and is magnetized to provide individual magnetic fields between sets of north and south poles on only one cylindrical surface thereof. Each of the cylinders is constructed from a plurality of segments in one preferred embodiment thereof and magnetically rigid materials are utilized to enhance the field magnitudes in another preferred thereof. Segments having a substantially triangular cross sectional configuration are utilized in other preferred embodiments, while flux contributions from at least three segments combine to sustain each set of north and south poles in still other preferred embodiments.

Permanent magnet structure for use in electric machinery

Magnetically rigid materials are utilized to enhance the field magnitudes oduced by permanent magnet structures that are utilized in electric machinery. Magnetic circuit losses due to unnecessary magnetic fields are eliminated without employing a conventional shunt. The magnetically rigid material is cylindrically configured and magnetized to provide individual magnetic fields between sets of north and south poles on only one cylindrical surface thereof. At least one coaxial cylinder of the magnetically rigid material is included in each permanent magnet structure of the invention and each of the cylinders is constructed from a plurality of segments in one preferred embodiment thereof. Segments having a substantially triangular cross-sectional configuration are utilized in other preferred embodiments, while flux contributions from at least three segments combine to sustain each set of north and south poles in still other preferred embodiments.

The fabrication of a flux source using magnetically rigid material is dissed for deriving a magnetic field of uniform density and enhanced magnitude within an enclosed annular cavity thereof. In the preferred embodiments, segments of the magnetically rigid material are configured and arranged in accordance with the desired direction of the magnetic field relative to the annular axis of the cavity.

A permanent magnet structure comprising a longitudinally extending flux sce fabricated of magnetically rigid material. The flux source comprises a central cavity with a magnetic field being produced therein. Magnetic dipoles having predetermined magnitude and orientation for compensating nonuniformities in the magnetic field are symmetrically located within the plane of the flux source.

Compensation for magnetic nonuniformities of permanent magnet structures

A magnetic structure fabricated of magnetically rigid materials combines a adial magnetic field source with an axial magnetic field source to produce a conical field source. The radial magnetic field source typically comprises a substantially annular enclosed cavity with an internal magnetic field oriented perpendicular to the annular axis of the cavity. The axial magnetic field source most likely comprises a substantially cylindrical enclosed cavity with an internal magnetic field oriented parallel to the cylindrical axis of the cavity.

A permanent magnet structure comprises a flux source having a central cav wherein a highly uniform magnetic field is produced of radial orientation. The flux source comprises a pair of radially magnetized discs of MR material. The discs are coaxially aligned parallel to and separated from each other a given distance. A ring fabricated of passive ferromagnetic material circumscribes the peripheries of the discs, and cladding magnets cover the planar exterior surface of each disc.

The fabrication of a flux source using magnetically rigid material is dissed for deriving a magnetic field of uniform density and enhanced magnitude within an enclosed cylindrical cavity thereof. In the preferred embodiments, segments of the magnetically rigid material are configured and arranged in the flux source to direct the magnetic field in parallel with the cyindrical axis of the cavity.

Bucking magnets and other supplemental magnetic elements are provided to as precisely as possible control the magnetic flux field effected for the diagnostic procedures.
