The system and method creates immediate supplemental blood flow into an organ by punching a cannula into the organ to remove a core of the organ. The process of punching creates essentially no heat and therefore does not cauterize the wound. In the case of the heart this results in immediate supplemental blood flow into the heart muscle. Animal tests have shown this immediate blood flow is sufficient to sustain the heart even when a major coronary artery is completely blocked. The procedure may be performed in an open surgical field procedure by punching cores from the outside of the heart in or it may be a percutaneous catheter procedure punching cores from the inside-out of an organ.

Method and apparatus for providing immediate supplemental blood flow to an organ

A method of performing heart surgery is disclosed. The method comprises preparing a patient for coronary bypass surgery, assessing blood flow characteristics in the heart region, making decisions on graft locations and the number of grafts based upon the blood flow characteristics and completing the surgery. The method is also useful for surgery on other bodily organs and regions.

Method of performing heart surgery using thermographic imaging

A coronary artery graft flow-meter apparatus for insertion into a delivery line for solution to be perfused through a graft after the graft is anastomosed to a coronary artery is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a flow-meter chamber having an upper end and a lower end, the upper end having an inflow port and the lower end having an outflow port. The chamber includes a plastic bag positioned therein which is adapted to communicate with a volumetric container containing the solution. The solution flows from the volumetric container to the plastic bag thereby providing a measurement of the flow rate of the solution through the graft.
