Resin compatible yarn binder and uses thereof

Certain embodiments of the invention are directed to a fiber strand comprising at least one fiber at least partially coated with a starch-free composition formed from the components comprising at least one film forming material, at least one polymeric lubricant, at least one rosin, at least one organo silane coupling agent, at least one dispersion of polymeric particles, wherein the individual particles have a diameter of at least 0.1 microns, at least one emulsifying agent, and at least one additional lubricant that is different from the at least one polymeric lubricant.

The present invention provides an at least partially coated fiber strand comprising a plurality of glass fibers having a coating composition on at least a portion of at least one of the glass fibers, the coating composition comprising at least one coating comprising greater than 20 weight percent on a total solids basis of a plurality of particles selected from inorganic particles, organic hollow particles, composite particles, and mixtures of any of the foregoing, wherein the plurality of particles have a Mohs' hardness value which does not exceed the Mohs' hardness value of the glass fibers.

Impregnated glass fiber strands and products including the same

A method and coating are provided for temporarily protecting a substrate or article during shipping, handling or storage by applying a removable protective coating over at least a portion of the substrate. The substrate may be flat or curved and may have zero, one or more functional coatings. A plurality of substrates with the protective coating of the invention may be arranged in a shipping container so that the protective coating reduces the possibility of damage to the substrate or optional functional coating. In one embodiment, the protective coating is the evaporation or reaction product of an aqueous coating composition containing a polyvinyl alcohol polymer which may be subsequently removed by aqueous washing, thermal decomposition or combustion. In another embodiment, the protective coating is formed by sputtering a substantially carbon coating onto the substrate. The carbon coating is subsequently removed by combustion. The protective coating may have identification materials, such as colorants or fragrance materials, such that different types of substrates and/or functional coatings can be distinguished from each other. Additionally, the temporary protective coating can improve the heating of a functionally coated glass substrate.

Methods for inhibiting abrasive wear of a fiber strand comprising at least one glass fiber by sliding contact with surface asperities of a solid object, comprising (a) applying a composition to at least a portion of a surface of at least one glass fiber of a glass fiber strand; (b) at least partially drying the composition to form a sized glass fiber strand having a residue of the composition upon at least a portion of the surface of the at least one class fiber; and (c) sliding at least a portion of the glass fiber strand to contact surface asperities of a solid object, the surface asperities having a hardness value which is greater than a hardness value of the at least one glass fiber, such that abrasive wear of the at least one glass fiber of the glass fiber strand by contact with the surface asperities of the solid object is inhibited by the inorganic solid lubricant particles.

The present invention provides a glass fiber strand comprising at least one glass fiber at least partially coated with a sizing composition prepared from ingredients comprising; at least one starch; at least one lubricant; and at least one silane coupling agent comprising: &lsqb;((R,),Y),R,SiR,NX, wherein R,and R,are each monovalent radials; R,is a divalent linking group; a is 1 to 3; X is (R,),ZC(&boxH;O)CH(Q)CH(Q)&mdash;, wherein Z is CH,, O, S or N, Q is H, alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, or C(&boxH;O)ZR,and R,is a hydrocarbon moiety of one to twenty carbon atoms, hydrogen, a silyl group or an organic polymer; Y is oxygen, nitrogen or sulfur; and b is 1 or 2 depending upon the valency of Y. Sizing composition for glass fibers

Aqueous forming size compositions for treating a plurality of glass fibers include an oleophobic starch; a N-vinyl amide polymer; a wax component containing an ester formed from reacting (a) a monocarboxylic acid and (b) a monohydric alcohol; an emulsifying agent for the wax component; and a cationic lubricant different from the wax component. The forming size composition is essentially free of: (1) oleophilic starches; (2) polyolefin emulsions; and (3) preservatives selected from organometallic compounds, formaldehydes, derivatives and mixtures thereof. Glass fibers sized and coated with such compositions can be woven into fabrics.

Forming size compositions, glass fibers coated with the same and fabrics

An aqueous starch-oil sizing composition is provided which produces improved processibility in woven and non-woven applications. The sizing has low viscosity starch, a lubricant which is a mixture of oil and wax where the wax is present in an amount of at least twice the oil, cationic lubricants, and a humectant. The size also includes an organo-functional silane coupling agent such as gamma-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxy silane which may be hydrolyzed. Emulsifiers, defoamers, and biocides may be present. Strands of glass fiber which have been treated with this size have generally shown a reduced tendency to shed the size from the strands, a reduction in the buildup of broken filaments or 'fuzz' on processing equipment and reduced strand breakage.

Starch-oil sizing for glass fibers

A wet and dry jet wet spinning process produce one or a plurality of siliceous-containing fibers. At least a partial hydrolyzate is formed from silicon alkoxides and/or colloidal dispersions of hydrolyzable metal oxides through acid catalyzed hydrolysis in the presence of a solvent. The ratio of amounts of the water to silicon alkoxide or hydrous oxide is around 1.5 to 1 up to less than around 4 to 1. Both the hydrolysis and polymerization reactions produce an ungelled hydrolyzate with a viscosity in the range of 70 to greater than 1000 poise. This hydrolyzate is extruded through a spinnerette into a gaseous environment for dry jet wet spinning followed by contacting with a nonsolvent liquid or directly into a nonsolvent liquid for wet spinning. The contacting with the nonsolvent liquid is for effective coagulation to produce cohesive fiber that may have some stickiness. The fiber is removed from the nonsolvent liquid where the fiber's length is continuous from the spinnerette to removal. The continuous fiber is collected when it has at least a coagulated surface to produce a predominantly nonsticky fiber. The fiber may be utilized as precursor fiber or further processed by washing and/or stretching and/or drying and/or heating for removal of water, and organic solvent and/or consolidating of the fiber.

Spinning of sol gel siliceous-containing fibers with wet coagulation

A sol gel reaction process for forming glassy articles involves the hydrolysis of silicon alkoxides with or without additional dispersions of hydrated silicon oxides, and polymerization including crosslinking. The present process involves forming glassy articles by the sol gel reaction route utilizes coagulation promoters having fatty acid hydrophobic moieties and hydrophilic moieties of primary, secondary, tertiary amines or quaternary ammonium compounds. The coagulation promoter catalyzes either and/or both of the hydrolysis and polymerization reactions. The coagulation promoter can be the only catalyst in forming the sol or can be used in addition to acid or basic catalyst. Additionally or alternatively, the coagulation promoter is added to a coagulation fluid to which shaped hydrolyzate is added. Afterwards the gelled shape precursor is optionally consolidated to form a precursor glass shape and optionally is consolidated to form the glassy shapes of films, coatings, beads, fibers, tubes and monolithic structures.

Method of promoting sol gel siliceous-containing reactions

Twisted bundle of glass fibers have on a substantial portion of the surface of each fiber a moisture reduced residue of an aqueous chemical treating composition (size). The size has an epoxy polymer as the major film forming polymer, at least one emulsifying agent for the epoxy polymer, at least one fiber lubricant in an effective fiber lubricating amount, at least one organofunctional metallic coupling agent in an effective coupling agent amount, polyvinylpyrrolidone, water dispersible or emulsifiable ultrahigh, high, or medium density polyethylene and water. The amount of the polyvinylpyrrolidone and polyethylene is in the range of around 1 to 15 weight percent of the nonaqueous components of the size for each of the polymers. When the bundle has less than around 400 filaments, starch is also present in an amount in the range of 0.5 to 15 weight percent of the nonaqueous components. The twisted bundle is produced by forming the fibers and chemically treating the fibers, gathering the fibers into a bundle, winding the fibers onto a package having a plurality of superimposed annular layers of bundles and conditioning the package to develop a moisture-reduced residue of the treatment, and unwinding the package in a horizontal position onto a vertical bobbin spinning about its longitudinal axis to produce a twist in the bundle. The twisted strand or yarn is suitable for coating with polymeric coatings like poly(vinyl chloride) plastisol coatings.
