An adaptive filtering arrangement for providing bit-synchronous, time-dependent filtering of a time-varying analog input signal taking the form of a time-dependent low pass filter including at least one adaptive resistive element that exhibits a varying resistance value as a function of a time. The time-dependent low pass filter uses as a 'control' input a modifying element responsive to a clock signal associated with the received signal for creating a time-varying control signal applied as an input to the adaptive resistive element. The time-varying control signal is created to be synchronous with a baud interval of a created output signal such that the instantaneous bandwidth of the time-dependent low pass filter is synchronous with the baud interval, exhibiting a relatively small bandwidth during a central portion of the baud interval and exhibiting a relatively large bandwidth during a transition from one baud interval to the next.

A receiver including an amplifying section for converting a relatively low power digital input signal into a relatively high power digital output signal is configured to utilize an adjustable feedback signal that is synchronous with the bit rate of the incoming digital signal so as to modify the level of the feedback signal as a function of time along the width of each bit of the digital input signal, increasing the bandwidth of the receiver at the leading edge of each incoming bit and decreasing the bandwidth otherwise.

A test system for testing a communication system having a plurality of communication links is disclosed. The test system has a single tester for performing various measurement and diagnostic tasks on a single link. The test system also has a switching system for independently testing any link by coupling the tester into any one link. The tester is coupled into the link by coupling the tester input to the link's transmitter and the tester output to the link's receiver. The switching system couples the tester such that all remaining links of the communication system have a unique one of the plurality of transmitters coupled to a unique one of the plurality of receivers, whereby the operation of the communication system can be maintained while testing individual links.

Sharing single tester among plurality of active communication links

In accordance with illustrative embodiments, methods and apparati, which determine jitter are described. In one example embodiment, a method includes receiving a signal, wherein the signal comprises a first data pattern which was generated at a first bit rate. The method also includes sampling the signal at a second bit rate to generate a second data pattern. The period of the second bit rate is different from the period of the first bit rate. The method also includes comparing the first data pattern and the second data pattern to determine differences between the first data pattern and the second data pattern. Furthermore, the method includes determining jitter in the signal according to the differences between the first data pattern and the data second data pattern. In other embodiments, by using two different bit rates to determine jitter, jitter can be determined in communication systems in a convenient and cost effective manner.

A fiber optic device and a method of assembling the fiber optic device to provide at least four degrees of adjustment for an optical beam transported between an optical fiber and bulk optics in an optical device package. At an opening in the wall of the optical processor package, a washer-like structure allows initially adjustable contact at a flat surface thereof and at a spherically curved surface thereof. One of the surfaces bears against the wall about the opening and the other surface bears against a contact feature of a connecting assembly, typically a pre-assembled collimator assembly, that holds a termination portion of the optical fiber. Translational adjustment is made at the flat surface and tilting adjustment is made at the curved surface before final attachment at both surfaces. The fiber optic device is thus aligned with the optical device package and, through that package, can be aligned with another connecting assembly that is initially fixed in place at another opening of the optical device package. Circumferential tapers are provided at appropriate ones of the surfaces, the wall, and the contact feature to facilitate adhesive flow for final attachment.

A method and apparatus may be used to determine the wavelength of an input optical signal. The wavelength of an input optical signal may be determined by dividing the input optical signal into a plurality of individual optical signals and inducing the individual optical signals to interfere with each other to form a plurality of output optical signals, such that the powers of the output optical signals have a ripple dependence on the wavelength of the input optical signal. The peak amplitude of each of the powers depends monotonically on the wavelength of the input optical signal over a range of wavelengths to be monitored for said input optical signal. A plurality of electrical output signals may be produced from the output optical signals, each electrical output signal corresponding to the power of each output optical signal. The electrical output signals may then be compared to a predetermined set of signal values in order to determine the wavelength of the input optical signal. A monitor employing this method may easily be incorporated into a telecommunications system.

Optical waveguide based power and wavelength monitor

An optical system is provided with an optical assembly and a wavelength division multiplexer surface for transmitting a light beam. The optimal alignment of these light beams is accomplished by adjusting a steering device, which includes an optical wedge or a universal coupling, until the light path of the transmitted light beam through the optical assembly aligns with the light path of the transmitted light beam through the wavelength division multiplexing surface.

Optical alignment system

A planar waveguide monitor is shown for determining the wavelength and power of component optical signals of a multiplexed optical signal. The monitor includes an optical waveguide router similar to a Dragone router with at least twice as many output waveguides as the number of component optical signals. An array of optical detectors is disposed to detect output optical signals from the output waveguides. The optical detectors produce a plurality of electrical output signals corresponding to the power of each detected output optical signal. The monitor includes a programmable computer to compare the electrical output signals to a predetermined set of output responses. The power and wavelength of each component optical signal of the multiplexed optical signal may be determined from this comparison.

The lens is also positioned for movement in directions parallel to a plane traversing the path of the optical beam. An optical apparatus for multiplexing a plurality of optical signals of different wavelengths to provide a multiplexed output optical signal. A plurality of input waveguides receive the plurality of optical signals. A first free space region is connected to the plurality of input waveguides, and an optical grating comprising a plurality of unequal length waveguides is connected to the first free space region. A second free space region is connected to the optical grating, and an output waveguide is connected to the second free space region for providing the multiplexed output optical signal. First and second cross-coupling output ports are connected to the second free space region for providing first and second cross-coupling output signals representative of the cross-coupling of the optical signals with said cross-coupling output signals, wherein said first and second cross-coupling signals are approximately equally strong for a given one of the optical signals only when said optical signal has a wavelength substantially equal to a specified wavelength for said optical signal.

Multiple laser wavelength stabilization

A fiber optic apparatus and a method for altering the orientation of a mirror of the fiber optic apparatus using a laser. The fiber optic apparatus comprises an optical wave guide with at least one optical fiber, a retaining structure, and a mirror. The retaining structure includes at least one lens disposed therein. The optical wave guide is coupled to a first end of the retaining structure and the mirror is coupled to a second end of the retaining structure so that the lens is disposed between the wave guide and the mirror. When the apparatus is being assembled, a portion of the retaining structure is illuminated with a laser to correct misalignments of the components of the apparatus.

Laser aided tilt adjustment of an optical lens

Overlapped coupler combination Photonic Lightguide Circuits for routing optical signals within an optical communication system include at least two couplers whose planar slab waveguides are disposed in supportedly overlying relation so as to conserve wafer real estate. In a preferred form of the invention wherein a Dragone router is implemented, output waveguides of a first of the couplers are connected to the input waveguides of a second of the couplers at a predetermined angle so as to create path length differences in the individual optical signals traversing through the various waveguides. These path length differences ensure that the optical signals have good wavelength differentiation so that a large number of channels can be accommodated. The signals traverse through the couplers in uniform or non-uniform spaced channels of less than about 100 GHz, and more preferably less than about 25 GHz. The coupler combination devices are particularly useful as Dragone routers and other types of DWDM routers.

Intersecting N x M star couplers for routing optical signals

An automated &ldquo;tuning&rdquo; system is disclosed that utilizes the known tuning curve (on an approximation thereof) to control the tuning process. In particular, the tuning curve is transformed (if necessary) into a quadratic with a local maximum, where the maximum is associated with the optimum tuning value. In one embodiment, the tuning system of the present invention may be used to provide alignment between optical components. The system may be organized to recognize &ldquo;backlash&rdquo; in the tuning process and perform additional tuning adjustments to overcome this backlash. Each tuning curve may be one-dimensional and a set of such curves used to provide for an N-dimensional tuning.

Automated alignment system

A Michelson interferometer optical mirror switch is formed to include an optical signal path adjustment arrangement to transform the switch between a first, &ldquo;pass through&rdquo; state and a second, &ldquo;reflective&rdquo; state. A pair of input optical signal paths are coupled into an optical beam splitter that thereafter directs 50% of each optical signal toward a mirror element. The reflected signals then pass back through the beam splitter. If the optical path lengths are equal, an optical signal entering a first signal port will be coupled into a second signal port (the &ldquo;pass through&rdquo; state). If the optical path lengths differ by an odd, half-wavelength amount, the reflected signals will be directed back into the optical signal port of origin (the &ldquo;reflective&rdquo; state).
