Provided are a system and method of input to a computer in a vehicle. An electronic communication is formed between a first electronic device and a display of a second electronic device that is viewable by a user from a location in the vehicle, including providing by the first electronic device a first input mode for the second electronic device. A multimodal application is executed that permits the user to interact with the display of the second electronic device by a combination of the first input mode and at least one second input mode for the second electronic device. The combination of the first input mode and the at least one second input mode controls the display of the first electronic device.

A method of providing enhanced characters suitable for display on substantially low-resolution displays includes scaling-down a first representation of at least one character belonging to a given font according to a predetermined factor. A second representation of the at least one character results. The first representation is a monochrome pixel representation and the second representation is a sub-pixel representation. The second representation is converted to a color display representation according to a set of predetermined criteria.

Method and device providing enhanced characters

In entering text into an electronic device with a keypad having a number of keys, each key represents a plurality of characters. A character is entered by the corresponding key and selected among the plurality of characters by pressing the key a number of times corresponding to the character. To each key is attached, in addition to the plurality of characters, a further, ambiguous character representing any one of the plurality of characters. A key sequence is activated such that an ambiguous character sequence comprising at least one ambiguous character is generated. Possible non-ambiguous character sequences corresponding to the ambiguous character sequence are generated and compared with a vocabulary stored in a memory and comprising character sequences representing words occurring in a given language. Those possible character sequences that match character sequences in the vocabulary are pre-selected. One of the pre-selected character sequences is selected and entered into the device.

Entering text into an electronic communication device

A font database includes a plurality of font files each of which stores bitmaps associated with a range of characters. The plurality of font files contains only a single version of a bitmap for each character. In a first embodiment, a plurality of composite font files contain one of more pointers pointing to selected ones of said plurality of font files. In a second embodiment, a rules set responsive to a print request retrieves a desired font file to print a character in accordance with the established rule set.
