The invention relates to a watercraft having improved characteristics for travel in ice, particularly an icebreaker, supply vessel, cargo vessel or corresponding, which watercraft has a hull, which has at the stern portion a propulsion and steering arrangement, which is mainly responsible for movement and steering of the watercraft and which includes at least one skeg, in which is located at least one propeller device. In accordance with the invention, said skegs comprise two units located on different sides of the center line of the hull. Said propeller device is located at the stern end of the skeg. In addition, the skeg has between the propeller device and the hull of the watercraft, in the longitudinal direction on the skeg, one or more thruster devices to provide a water flow mainly transverse in relation to the hull.

Watercraft with improved characteristics for travel in ice

A relatively wide vessel is assisted through an ice field by an icebreaker having a relatively narrow hull. The icebreaker includes two steerable propulsion mechanisms at the opposite ends respectively of the hull, and the propulsion mechanisms are used to propel the icebreaker through the ice field in a direction at a substantial angle to its keel line, thereby opening in one pass of the icebreaker a passage having a width substantially greater than the waterline width of the icebreaker.

Icebreaking method and icebreaker

A main propulsion arrangement for a high power ship or the like comprises an underwater drive unit connected to and turnable by a substantially vertical tubular shaft journalled in the ship. The drive unit and the tubular shaft define a hollow casing enclosing an electrical propulsion motor connected to a propeller shaft, which is connected to a driving propeller external of the casing. The casing is, at its inside, supported by several mainly vertical web plates, which are arranged to act, in combination, as elements structurally stiffening and supporting the casing, as elements securing the propulsion motor in place relative to the casing, as elements transmitting to the casing reaction forces to the torque developed by the propulsion motor, and as wall elements of ducts for incoming and outgoing gaseous coolant for the propulsion motor.
