The present invention relates to scissor action tools which comprise first and second cutting elements pivotable about a first joint in a first plane of movement and first and second hand levers pivotable about a second joint in a second plane of movement. One end of the first cutting element is pivotally connected to one end of the first hand lever at a third joint and one end of the second cutting element is pivotally connected to one end of the second hand lever at a fourth joint, a line connecting the third and fourth joint forming a meeting line between the first and second plane of movement. The third and fourth joint allow the angle between the first and second plane of movement to be adjusted.

A foot operated cutting device used to perform pruning, shearing, trimming, and similar operations includes a cutting head provided with a spring biased blade cooperating with a jaw, an actuating mechanism in a housing coupled to a foot actuating device. The foot operated cutting device generates power from a force input supplied by a user to the foot actuator.

A lopper used to perform lopping, pruning and similar operations includes a lopping head provided with a spring-biased blade cooperating with a jaw, a drive mechanism, and an elongate housing. The drive mechanism includes first and second wheels rotatable relative thereto about a first axis. A head line couples the first wheel to the blade at a connecting point, and the second wheel is coupled to a driving line. The first wheel is eccentric relative to the second wheel so that a distance separating a region of a guiding surface of the first wheel from the first axis is smallest at a predetermined point of blade travel across the bight. The lopper also includes an intermediate handle and a lower handle selectively operable to actuate the blade relative to the jaw.

A tool for performing lopping, pruning and similar operations includes a housing assembly formed of a pair of telescoping tubular sections. The tool also includes a tool head, a head line and an actuating line. The tool head, which is connected to one end of a tubular section, preferably includes a spring-biased blade coupled to the head line which is connected to a slidable block. The actuating line, while engaging the slidable block so that tensioning the actuating line causes movement of the blade, is also slidable relative to the block upon relative movement of the tubular sections.

A hand tool for cutting, such as a pair of pruners, includes a pair of opposed elongated members, each member comprising a jaw at a front end portion thereof, a handle at a rear end portion thereof, and a midportion where the members cross over each other. A pivotable joint unites the midportions for scissor-like movement of the handles and jaws, and a spring biases the handles and jaws to an open position. According to the invention, one of the handles is rotatable. A transmission mechanism is provided to interconvert the rotation force applied to the rotatable handle into a rectilinear force used to draw the handles together.

A variable force lopping tool is provided with a gear mechanism configured so that maximum leverage is obtained at a point in the cutting stroke corresponding to the maximum resistance by the workpiece being cut. The mechanism comprises a pair of mating gears formed on first and second elongated members and cooperating with a plate having a forwardly extending jaw or blade. The plate is pivotally connected to the first member. The second member is pivotally connected to a rearwardly extending tang of the plate.

A pair of snips including first and second, opposed, elongated members, each member comprising a jaw at a front end portion thereof, a handle at a rear end portion thereof, and a midportion where the members cross over each other. A pivot unites the midportions for scissor-like movement of the handles and jaws about the pivot. The snips also includes a gripper biasely connected to the handle of one of the members to retain a portion of a workpiece severed by the snips. The first member includes a metal plate having a forwardly extending blade which comprises one of the jaws and a rearwardly extending tang. According to the invention, at least the handle of the first member and gripper are made of a moldable material molded onto the metal plate, such that the handle of the first member is molded onto the tang of the metal plate and the gripper is integral with the first member and molded onto an outer surface of the plate. The moldable material is most preferably a plastic, but other moldable substances could be employed.

A lopper of the type having an anvil cooperable with a blade actuated by a pair of elongated members made of moldable material, the first member being unitary and comprising a first handle merging into a first gear segment having a central post integral therewith, the first member terminating at a distal end by the anvil, the second elongated member comprising a second handle merging into a second gear segment at one end of the member, the second gear segment having a second post integral therewith, the first and second members being pivotally connected to a metal plate at the central and second posts. The moldable material is most preferably a plastic, but other moldable substances could be employed.

A pivoted tool with foldable handles, such as a pair of scissors, includes a pair of opposed elongated members, each member comprising a jaw at a front end portion thereof, a handle at a rear end portion thereof, and a midportion where the members cross over each other. According to the invention, each member includes a metal plate having a forwardly extending blade which comprises one of the jaws and a rearwardly extending tang. The foldable handles and pivot are made of a moldable material molded onto the metal plate, such that the handles are molded onto the tang of the metal plate and the pivot extends through a central hole in the metal plate. The moldable material is most preferably a plastic, but other moldable substances could be employed.

The present invention relates to a method of producing pivoted tools such as scissors, pliers, pruners, and the like. More particularly, this invention is concerned with the method of producing tools having a force applying end with formed handles, and opposed working ends disposed across a pivotable joint. In these tools, the pivotable joint comprises a pivot member formed concurrently with the handles as an integral part of one of the handles.

The present invention relates to hinged tools such as scissors, shears, pruners, or the like, having a force applying end with formed handles and an opposed working end consisting of a pair of blades disposed across a hinged joint through which a force may be transmitted. In these tools the handles, which are formed integrally with the hinge, are provided with ridge support in the form of heel elements to establish suitable contact between the blades.

The present invention relates to a method of producing pivoted tools such as scissors, pliers, shears, and the like. More particularly, this invention is concerned with the method of producing pivoted tools having a pair of elongated members and a pivotable joint. The pivotable joint comprises a pair of registering apertures cooperating with a self-compensating unitary pivot member. In these tools, the pivot member is formed when the tool is in closed registered configuration.
