A clip retains tapered connector members which joining tubing sections of a medical fluid drainage system, such as a urinary collection system. The clip has first and second ends configured to bear against external flanges projecting from the tapered connector members. A central body of the clip applies a controllable compression force to the first and second ends for urging the connector members together. The first and second ends include sub-fingers for snapping onto a respective one of the tapered connector members.

An air removal device removes air from blood flowing in a perfusion system. A generally cylindrical chamber has a liquid flow region at a lower end thereof and has a gas collection region at an upper end thereof. An arcuate manifold provides an arcuate flow path outside of the chamber having an upstream end and a downstream end. A slit aperture is provided between the arcuate manifold and the chamber along at least a substantial portion of the arcuate manifold. A mixture of gas and liquid introduced into the arcuate flow path at the upstream end flows through the slit aperture to create a spiral flow within the chamber causing the gas to move toward a central axis of the chamber and into the gas collection region.

A blood vessel in a patient is severed by inserting a shaft through an incision in the patient, the shaft carrying first and second clamps. The first and second clamps are closed against the vessel in closely adjacent relationship to one another. Thereafter, the clamps are moved in generally opposing directions to sever the vessel at a location between the clamps. Each clamp carries a cauterizing pad for cauterizing the severed ends of the vessel.

Minimal invasive endoscopic methods and apparatus for harvesting blood vessels

An endoscopic apparatus for dissecting a blood vessel includes a endoscopic barrel having a plurality of lumens, one of the lumens being dimensioned for receiving an endoscope, a handle disposed at a proximal end of the endoscopic barrel, at least two fingers having distally curved ends for dissecting and cauterizing the desired blood vessel, and a displaceable cone portion disposed over a distal end of the endoscopic barrel. The cone portion has a first position concealing the at least two fingers and a second, extended position exposing the at least two fingers. A control rod extends between the handle and each of the fingers such that movement of the control mechanism between a first position and a second position produces a predetermined movement of the respective finger.

Method and apparatus for endoscopic dissection of blood vessels

An endoscopic apparatus for harvesting a desired blood vessel including an endoscopic barrel having at least two lumens, one of the lumens dimensioned for receiving an endoscope, a handle disposed at a proximal end of the endoscopic barrel, a cone portion disposed over a distal end of the endoscopic barrel, and at least one manipulator fork extendable from the cone portion for dissecting the desired blood vessel from connective tissue.

The pack assembly comprises a blood reservoir, a blood oxygenator, and a carrier for vertically mounting the blood reservoir and blood oxygenator. Trays may be releasably attached to the carrier to serve as containers for coiled tubing used in the support circuit.

Integrated vein dissector and cauterizing apparatus for endoscopic harvesting of blood vessels

A self-contained pack assembly includes all of the disposable components of an extracorporeal support circuit for cardiac bypass surgery. The pack assembly comprises a blood reservoir, a blood oxygenator, and a carrier for mounting the blood reservoir and blood oxygenator. One or more trays may be releasably attached to the carrier to serve as storage containers for coiled tubing used in the support circuit. Pre-made connections can also be formed between the tubing and the blood reservoir and blood and oxygenator as may be desired.

A blood treatment system has a housing formed of transparent plastic material configured so that substantially the entire blood flow path is visible. A generally planar blood filtration media assembly divides a blood treatment chamber within the housing into first and second interior spaces that are visible through the transparent housing, with a cardiotomy manifold in fluid communication with the first interior space and a venous blood inlet in fluid communication with the second interior space. A generally planar blood defoamer media assembly is provided generally parallel with and spaced apart from the blood filtration media assembly. The blood defoamer media assembly divides the second interior space from the blood storage chamber. The blood flow path along each side of the blood filtration media assembly and each side of the blood defoamer media assembly is visible.

A volume controlling support for a flexible venous reservoir that permits the reservoir to have a clear flow passage from its inlet to its outlet which is visible and accessible to the perfusionist. The portion of the reservoir through which the major part of the blood flow is occurring can be manipulated if necessary, particularly for the purpose of manipulating the reservoir to improve the clearance of air bubbles in the blood. Preferred embodiments also enhance the convenience for the perfusionist by permitting right-handed or left-handed operation, and by providing an approximate read-out of the volume of blood contained in the reservoir.

A blood reservoir mounting bracket supports alternate sizes of blood reservoir assemblies. The reservoir mounting bracket has a reversible reservoir mounting frame, with mounting pins on one side thereof arranged in a first pattern for the mounting holes of one size of a blood reservoir assembly, and mounting pins on its other side arranged in a second pattern for the mounting holes of a second, different sized blood reservoir assembly. Alternatively, the reservoir mounting bracket has a reservoir mounting frame with retractable pins therein for use in adapting to differently arrayed holes on different sized blood reservoir assemblies. The reservoir mounting bracket further has an oxygenator holder which allows orientation of the oxygenator in a plurality of positions.

A blood handling system has a first blood handling apparatus mounted on a second blood handling apparatus with a mounting apparatus. The mounting apparatus has two primary components: a retention sleeve attached to a stem that protrudes from the lower portion of the first blood handling apparatus; and a slotted plate that is attached to a stem on the second blood handling apparatus. The retention sleeve has a track for receiving the slotted plate and a flexible tab, with a protruding tooth, that securely engages the slotted plate in a locked position. If it becomes necessary to disconnect the first blood handling apparatus from the second blood handling apparatus during surgery, the tab may be easily moved into an unlocked position, allowing the disk to slide freely out of the track so that the units can be easily separated from each other.

Mounting apparatus for blood handling systems

A modular blood treatment system with a blood treatment cartridge having a blood treatment media receiving opening defining an entrance of a first chamber. The first chamber defines a first interior space and a second interior space. At least one cardiotomy blood sucker port is in fluid communication with the first interior space via a cardiotomy manifold. The cardiotomy manifold preferably defines a downward curving surface from the at least one cardiotomy blood sucker port to the first interior space having a radius of about 2.54 to 7.62 cm. A venous blood inlet is in fluid communication with a second interior space within the interior space. A first blood treatment media is interposed between the first interior space and the second interior space. A second blood treatment media is interposed between the second interior space and the blood treatment media receiving opening. A blood storage section has an outlet port extends substantially across the blood treatment media receiving opening. In one embodiment, at least one blood diverter is located in the blood storage section to form two funnel-shaped blood flow channels between the blood treatment media opening and the outlet port. The funnel-shaped blood flow channels preferably define a first downward flow axis at an angle of about 20 to 24 degrees with respect to horizontal. The funnel-shaped blood flow channels preferably define a second downward flow axis at an angle from horizontal of about 3 to 7 degrees laterally from the first downward flow axis.
