Disclosed herein are coatings made from a biocompatible controlled release polymer and an active component. The active component can be, for example, an antimicrobial agent, an immune modulating agent, a cell signaling factor, or a growth factor. The coating has micrometer and nanometer scale features on the surface thereof.

An air interface plane (AIP) of a radio frequency (RF) aperture includes: a circuit board having a first side and a second side opposite the first side; and a matrix of tapered elements arranged on the first side of the circuit board and secured to the circuit board, the matrix of tapered elements cooperating to at least one of receive or transmit an over-the-air RF signal. Suitably, each tapered element of the matrix has: a central hub extending along a longitudinal axis from a hub base which is proximate to the first side of the circuit board to an apex of the tapered element which is distal from the first side of the first circuit board; and a plurality of arms extending from the central hub at the apex of the tapered element, each of the plurality of arms including a first portion that projects the arm radially away from the longitudinal axis and a second portion that projects the arm longitudinally toward the first side of the circuit board.

The coating material includes a polymeric component; a metal oxide component; and a catalytic component. The catalytic component includes a metal oxide or a mixed metal oxide which is an effective catalyst for an oxidation reaction. The coated personal protective clothing item includes a personal protective clothing substrate with a coating including the coating material.

Decontamination compositions useful to decontaminate potentially toxic materials, such as PAH and others, present on clothing comprise an aqueous solution of a water soluble cerium salt or a dispersion of cerium oxide in water. The decontamination composition may optionally include at least one of an oxidizer, a surfactant, a co-solvent, a chelating agent, and a polymer. Methods of decontaminating clothing involve applying the decontamination composition to the clothing.

Decontamination compositions and methods of decontamination

A method of employing an assembly containing a shelf-stable formulation for decontaminating skin exposed to nerve agents in a package forming a first chamber and a second chamber separated by a barrier with water located in the first chamber and a dry sponge and diacetylmonoxime or derivatives thereof, located in the second chamber, wherein the diacetylmonoxime is distributed within the sponge, the method comprising opening the barrier between the first and second chambers, shaking the package to move the water into sponge until the sponge is wet, tearing open the package, removing the sponge and wiping the sponge on skin. Preferably polyethylene glycol is distributed in the sponge and wiping the sponge on the skin leaves a mixture of diacetylmonoxime and polyethylene glycol on the skin.

Method for decontaminating skin exposed to toxic compounds

An assembly containing a shelf-stable formulation for decontaminating skin exposed to toxic compounds located in a package formed with water and potassium bicarbonate in a first chamber; and a sponge, diacetylmonoxime (DAM), and polyethylene glycol (PEG) located in a second chamber. The package includes a barrier between the first chamber and the second chamber, with the barrier being configured to be rapidly removed when needed to enable the water and potassium bicarbonate to enter the second chamber. The package is made by placing the water and potassium bicarbonate in the first chamber of a package; mixing the DAM with PEG to form a DAM:PEG mixture; infusing the sponge with the DAM:PEG mixture to distribute DAM within the sponge; and placing the sponge, DAM and PEG in a second chamber of the package. Infusing the sponge includes solubilizing the DAM:PEG mixture in ethanol or another low boiling point solvent to form an ethanol-DAM-PEG solution and applying the ethanol-DAM-PEG solution evenly to the sponge. The ethanol is removed by applying heat and/or vacuum to the sponge.

Assembly for decontaminating and method of manufacturing the assembly

Methods and devices for altering the power of a lens, such as an intraocular lens, are disclosed. In one method, the lens comprises a single polymer matrix containing crosslinkable pendant groups, wherein the polymer matrix increases in volume when crosslinked. The lens does not contain free monomer. Upon exposure to ultraviolet radiation, crosslinking causes the exposed portion of the lens to increase in volume, causing an increase in the refractive index. In another method, the lens comprises a polymer matrix containing photobleachable chromophores. Upon exposure to ultraviolet radiation, photobleaching causes a decrease in refractive index in the exposed portion without any change in lens thickness. These methods avoid the need to wait for diffusion to occur to change the lens shape and avoid the need for a second exposure to radiation to lock in the changes to the lens.
