A cutting tool insert is formed from a cemented carbide body and a coating particularly useful in medium-rough to rough turning of stainless-steels and superalloys. The cemented carbide body is formed from cemented carbide with a composition of 7.0-12.0 wt-% Co, 5.0-11.0 wt-% cubic carbide forming metals from group IVb, Vb and VIb of the periodic table, preferably Ti, Nb and Ta, and balance WC with a 10-30 &#x3bc;m essentially cubic carbide phase free and binder phase enriched surface zone. The coating includes an MTCVD Ti(C,N) as the first layer adjacent the body having a thickness of from &#x3e;2.5 to 7.0 &#x3bc;m, on top of which an &#x3b1;AlOlayer is present, with a thickness of between 2.0 and 5.0 &#x3bc;m, and a total thickness of the coating of between 5.5 and 9.5 &#x3bc;m. The alumina layer has a (006) texture.

Coated cutting tool for medium-rough to rough turning of stainless steels and superalloys

The present invention relates to a cutting tool insert comprising a cemented carbide body and a coating particularly useful in fine to medium-rough turning of stainless-steels. The cemented carbide body consists of a cemented carbide with a composition of 5.0-9.0 wt-% Co, 5.0-11.0 wt-% cubic carbide forming metals from group IVb, Vb and VIb of the periodic table, preferably Ti, Nb and Ta, and balance WC with a 10-30 &#x3bc;m essentially cubic carbide phase free and binder phase enriched surface zone. The coating comprises an MTCVD Ti(C7N) as the first layer adjacent the body having a thickness of from 2.5 to 7.0 &#x3bc;m, on top of which an &#x3b1;-AlOlayer is present, with a thickness of between 2.0 and 5.0 &#x3bc;m, and a total thickness of the coating between 5.5 and 9.5 &#x3bc;m. The alumina layer has a (006) texture.

Coated cutting tool for fine to medium-rough turning of stainless steels

Forming coated cemented carbide inserts, particularly useful in fine turning of super alloys. The inserts are characterized by a composition of a cemented carbide of WC, about 4.0 wt-% Co to about 7.0 wt-% Co, about 0.25 wt-% Cr to 0.50 wt-% Cr, and a coercivity (Hc) of about 28 kA/m to about 38 kA/m. The coating comprises a single (TiSi)N-layer, where x is between about 0.1 and about 0.25, with a crystal structure of NaCl type and a total thickness between about 0.5 &#x3bc;m and about 2.0 &#x3bc;m with a strong (200)-texture.

Method of making a coated cemented carbide insert

Coated cemented carbide inserts are particularly useful in general turning of superalloys. The inserts are formed from a cemented carbide of WC about 5.0-7.0 wt-% Co, and about 0.22-0.43 wt-% Cr, where the substrate has a coercivity (Hc) of about 19-28 kA/m. The coating contains a single layer of (TiAl)N-layer, where x is 0.25-0.50, with a crystal structure of NaCl type, a total thickness of about 3.0-5.0 &#x3bc;m, (200)-texture, and a compressive residual strain of about 2.5&#xd7;10-5.0&#xd7;10, optionally containing an outermost TiN-layer.

Coated cutting tool for general turning in heat resistant super alloys (HRSA)

The present invention relates to coated cemented carbide inserts, particularly useful in general turning of superalloys. The inserts are characterized by a cemented carbide of WC, about 5.0-7.0 wt-% Co, and about 0.22-0.43 wt-% Cr, where the substrate has a coercivity (Hc) of about 19-28 kA/m. The coating contains a single (TiAl)N-layer, where x is about 0.25-0.50, with crystal structure of NaCl type, total thickness of about 3.0-5.0 &#x3bc;m, (200)-texture, and compressive residual strain of about 2.5&#xd7;10-5.0&#xd7;10, optionally containing an outermost TiN-layer.
