A piston and cylinder unit provides a supply actuable by means of an actuation device for delivering respiratory air in a respiratory cycle of a respirator. Its piston is sealed with its cylinder by means of a pair of rolling membranes arranged symmetrically with regard to one another. The membranes separate the cylinder contents into an antechamber and a working chamber. The wear of the rolling membranes during the working strokes and especially during the starting is decreased by a clean rolling of the folds. Also a leakage control takes place even during operation and an immediate detection of leaks due to bending stress, aging or other influences is guaranteed. For this purpose an inner chamber which is enclosed by the two rolling membranes is under a pressure different from the pressure in the antechamber and the working chamber so that the highest pressure is on a concave inside of the folds.

A respirator comprises a respiratory air circulation unit with an adjustable displacement volume and a respiratory air supply line and a respiratory system comprising an inspiration loop, an expiration loop and valve elements mounted in these loops. The valve elements are controllable by means of a control unit, so that small as well as large displacement volumes can be executed by means of a single circulation unit with the smallest space requirements possible. For this purpose the inspiration phase is divided into several sub-phases, during which the control unit controls the valve elements and the respiratory air circulation unit 4 so that several fillings of the adjustable displacement volume are supplied to the inspiration loop and only then is the expiration phase initiated. Thus the displacement volume of the circulation unit can be kept small. One or a few inspiration sub-phases are sufficient for the artificial respiration of infants and premature infants, while a multitude of sub-phases can be executed for the artificial respiration of adults with a large respiratory volume.

Respirator with multiple inspiratory strokes

A respirator device particularly for use in association with a tube insertable into a person's trachea comprises a trachea tube having an inflatable cuff which seals the tube with the person's trachea. A line for ventilating gas extends into the tube and terminates in a jet nozzle directed to the trachea. The opposite end of the tube is provided with a connection to atmosphere which also makes it possible to provide a controlled vacuum pressure at this end particularly in the expiration phase. Control is effected between the ventilating gas and the vacuum for regulating the respiration. With the inventive method the vacuum is provided at the outer end of the trachea tube particularly during respiration and it is effected by directing a vacuum pressure gas supply connection through a Venturi connection to the tube which produces the vacuum in the tube and communicates the tube to atmosphere. This gas connection is controlled along with a ventilating pressure gas connection to provide the desired respiration.

Respirator apparatus and method of operation thereof

A suction adapter for connecting a suction cathetor to a tracheal tube which is also connected to a respirator comprises a hollow body which has a first opening with a tracheal tube receiver fitting, a second opening with a respirator line connector and a third opening for introducing a suction catheter which is advantageously aligned with the tracheal tube receiver fitting. The hollow body or connector includes a first valve which closes the outside of the third opening and it includes a valve member which may be stopped in a closed as well as in an opened position. The second valve member is located within the hollow body and is spaced from the outside or first valve member. A passage in the interior of the hollow body is defined between the two valve members and the second valve member includes a valve seat at the end of the passage and a valve member which is pivotally mounted in the body which is engageable on the valve seat to close the passage. This second valve member is urged by a spring into a closing position. In accordance with the method of the invention, when the suction catheter is to be introduced into the fitting, the catheter housed in a casing of plastic is connected to the fitting by the insertion of a stop sleeve member after the member has been freed from the plastic. A catheter tube enclosed in the plastic is inserted through the stop sleeve and into the fitting after the first valve member is in the opened position. The stop sleeve contacts the inner valve or second valve and the amount of the insertion of the stop sleeve is controlled by knurls formed on the outside of the stop sleeve. A catheter tube is pushed through its plastic coating and through the stop sleeve and it is connected at its opposite end to a source of suction after first removing a plastic covering from this end of the tube. After the drainage is effected the catheter tube is withdrawn into its enclosing plastic so that no contamination of the outside atmosphere is possible.

An improved fresh gas device includes a gas mixer connected to a source of oxygen and to a source of at least one other gas for mixing oxygen to form a gas mixture to be supplied to a patient. A line bypasses the mixer and is provided with a switch for initiating pressure pulses in the bypass line and a pneumatically operated valve is provided downstream of the mixer and is controllable responsive to the pressure in the bypass line.

A tracheal tube comprises a hollow tube body having an open tube end and an inflatable sealing cuff disposed around the tube adjacent the tube end. At least one small diameter tube is associated with the hollow tube and it has a nozzle portion terminating in a discharge jet adjacent the open tube end for use in jet ventilation at high frequencies above 600 cycles per minute. The small diameter tube has a diameter of from between 0.4 to 0.05 .times. the inside diameter of the tube shaft and the outlet opening of the jet nozzle is arranged relative to the tube end either inside or outside the tube diameter at such a spacing that it is within .+-.5.times. the inside diameter of the tube body.

Tracheal tube

An apparatus for enhancing a person's breathing and artificial respiration which includes inspiration and expiration phases and operates in a situation where the inspiration phase is repeated periodically within the time content of the operation of the lungs. A respiratory gas breathing line having a tubular connection to a person's trachea also has a connection to a gas supply line. A pressure sensor is located in the tubular connection and it is connected to pressure control means which is also connected to the tubular connection and to the gas supply. In addition, pressure sensor is located in the tubular connection and connected to pressure control means connected between the respiratory breathing line and the gas supply. A pressure reducer, a dosing valve and an inspiration valve are located in series in the connection between the gas supply and the tubular connection. The pressure control means includes a frequency control device having a housing with a control chamber therein which is separated by adjustable partition means into an inspiration control chamber and an expiration control chamber which may be adjusted in size relatively. A frequency valve is provided with an inspiration line connection to the inspiration chamber and an expiration line connected to the expiration chamber. Pneumatic inspiration control elements are located in the inspiration line and the expiration line and a second inspiration line and respiration line is connected from the respective inspiration and respiration chambers to the inspiration valve in order to open and close the valve in accordance with the setting of the control system.

A synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation respirator for providing inhalation and exhalation cycles to a patient while permitting the patient to carry out a complete inhalation and exhalation cycle spontaneously, comprising a gas supply adapted to be connected to a patient for supplying breathing gas under pressure to the patient, a main line connected to the gas supplied for supplying breathing gas to the patient, a main valve in the main line, and a timing system connected to the gas supply and the main valve for opening the main valve for a first selected timed inhalation cycle to supply breathing air to the patient and closing the valve for a selected timed exhalation cycle to permit the patient to exhale. A timer is connected to the main line downstream of the main valve, to the gas supply and to the timing system for blocking the connection between the timing system and the gas supply for stopping cycling of the timing system in response to a spontaneous inhalation of the patient and for supplying breathing air to the patient for a second selected timed inhalation cycle, and a trigger is connected to the main line downstream of the main valve and to the timing system for switching the timing system from an exhalation cycle to an inhalation cycle in response to a spontaneous inhalation of the patient.
