In some embodiments, a computer-implemented spreadsheet management method is provided that automatically copies formatting and formulas from appropriate peer rows to an updated row. In some embodiments, the method automatically fixes formulas that are affected by the updated row in order to maintain consistency throughout the spreadsheet.

Technologies and concepts are described herein for authoring a database query through the modification of a view of the data to be returned by the query. A user interface is provided for authoring a database query through the modification of a view of the data to be returned by the query that includes a view showing the results of a database query. A user interface is also provided for modifying the view to define the results of the query. As the view is modified, a query definition is generated which, when executed against the database, will return the results of the database query shown in the view. When the desired results are shown in the view, the query definition can be saved and run against the database to perform the database query.

The method includes instantiating the data-centric software application, where the data-centric application has portions of business logic categorized and associated with items of data-centric application functionality defined in a schema. The method includes receiving customization input to customize at least one of the portions of business logic. The method includes formulating a representative model corresponding to at least one of the portions of customized business logic. The method includes applying the representative model to the schema to generate a customized schema that extends the business logic of the data-centric software application. The method includes instantiating the data-centric software application in accordance with the customized schema to customize the functionality of the business logic in the data-centric software application.

User-customized extensions for software applications

A document management system and method are provided to support simultaneous multi-user editing of a single document. The system and method do not require the use of a new file format or the use of a central document repository to limit user access to the document. When a user attempts to open the document and a determination is made that the document is in use, then an alert is presented to the user that informs the user that the document is locked for editing. The user may select to receive a notification when the original document is no longer in use. If the user selects to make a local copy and subsequently merge the changes, the local copy will be made and the path of the original document will be stored so that the original document location can be determined at the time that the changes are merged. When the original document becomes available, the user's changes can be merged into the original document. The original document is located using the original path that was stored when the local copy was created. Of course, any time that a merge is attempted, and a conflict exists (i.e., the changes in the local document are inconsistent with the changes made to the original document), an alert can be generated to inform the user of the conflict and the user can be prompted to reconcile the conflict to complete the merge.

The present invention extends to methods, systems, and computer program products of user-interface architecture for manipulating business models. Embodiments of the invention facilitate efficient generation and extension of business related software applications, including commingled data-centric applications that represent both data elements and business logic in metadata. Modules of the user-interface architecture permit users to enter commands through common metaphors and wizards that abstract underlying (and more complex) modeling commands and data formats from users. The user-interface architecture can automatically search for existing models to provide and extend business related functionality.

A computer-implemented method for providing a candidate list of alternatives for a text selection containing text from multiple input sources, each of which can be stochastic (such as a speech recognition unit, handwriting recognition unit, or input method editor) or non-stochastic (such as a keyboard and mouse). A text component of the text selection may be the result of data processed through a series of stochastic input sources, such as speech input that is converted to text by a speech recognition unit before being used as input into an input method editor. To determine alternatives for the text selection, a stochastic input combiner parses the text selection into text components from different input sources. For each stochastic text component, the combiner retrieves a stochastic model containing alternatives for the text component. If the stochastic text component is the result of a series of stochastic input sources, the combiner derives a stochastic model that accurately reflects the probabilities of the results of the entire series. The combiner creates a list of alternatives for the text selection by combining the stochastic models retrieved. The combiner may revise the list of alternatives by applying natural language principles to the text selection as a whole. The list of alternatives for the text selection is then presented to the user. If the user chooses one of the alternatives, then the word processor replaces the text selection with the chosen candidate.

A multi-source input and playback utility that accepts inputs from various sources, transcribes the inputs as text, and plays aloud user-selected portions of the text is disclosed. The user may select a portion of the text and request audio playback thereof. The utility examines each transcribed word in the selected text. If stored audio data is associated with a given word, that audio data is retrieved and played. If no audio data is associated, then a textto-speech entry or series of entries is retrieved and played instead.

A background audio recovery system displays an inactive status indicator for a speech recognition program module in an application program. To prevent losses of dictated speech when a speech recognition program module is inadvertently assigned to an inactive mode, the background audio recovery system determines whether an audio input device is receiving audio. If audio is being received by the audio input device, the background audio recovery system stores the audio data for later retrieval by the user. When a user issues a command to activate the speech recognition program module, the background audio recovery system initiates a background audio program module for manipulating the stored audio data that was recorded while the speech recognition program module was assigned to an inactive mode.

Conversion is triggered when dynamic IME analysis of the string indicates a threshold probability of correct conversion. Conversion of unconverted phonetic text is also triggered when the user relocates the insertion point. The user may select portions of text affected by conversion error and access a corresponding editable phonetic string and a prioritized list of alternate conversions for that string.
