A method and device for reducing power consumption of display devices proposes to reduce the total amount of light emitted in a perceptually indistinguishable manner based on the on the human visual sensitivity at the position of a pixel. The visibility of the processing can be made to remain provably below threshold, whereas other techniques may not be able to provide such proof. This is achieved by determining a minimum detectable modulation or a corresponding just-noticeable difference based on frequency intensity information for a pixel representative of how much there is of a set of frequencies at the pixel and a contrast sensitivity function representative of a model of human vision that predicts which contrasts at which frequencies are visible to the human eye. Pixel values may be reduced based on this minimum detectable modulation or just-noticeable difference. The contrast sensitivity function may be given by Barten's model and the frequency intensity information may be based on a hierarchical map built using a discrete wavelet transform or a continuous wavelet transform.

Pixel modification to reduce energy consumption of a display device

At least a method and an apparatus are presented for efficiently processing film grain while encoding or decoding video. For example, the method comprises estimating film grain parameters for a plurality of image blocks in an image with film grain, wherein the film grain parameters comprise at least one scaling factor. The estimating further comprises obtaining a plurality of film grain blocks, a film grain block being representative of a film grain estimate in an image block; obtaining a plurality of filtered blocks, a filtered block being representative of an image block without film grain; and determining at least one scaling factor for the plurality of images blocks in the image wherein the at least one scaling factor is adapted to statistics based on the plurality of film grain blocks and on the plurality of filtered blocks.

A device and a method for outputting video content for display on a display. At least one processor displays a first video content on the display, receives a second video content to display, obtains a first luminance value for the first video content, extracts a second luminance value from the second video content, adjusts a luminance of a frame of the second video content based on the first and second luminance values and outputs the frame of the second video content for display on the display. The video content can comprise frames and a luminance value can be equal to an average frame light level for the most recent L frames of the corresponding video content. In case a luminance value is unavailable, a Maximum Frame Average Light Levels of the first video content and the second video content can be used instead.

In image segmentation it is usually assumed that all the surfaces of a scene are reflecting light in a perfectly diffuse or Lambertian manner. However, most existing surfaces are non-Lambertian surfaces. Examples of non-Lambertian surfaces are specular, glossy or mirror-like surfaces whose appearance may change depending on the point of view of the scene. The method according to an embodiment of the invention does not make the assumption that surfaces of objects in the view are perfect Lambertian reflectors by providing a surface color segmentation which takes into account the change in appearance due to the nature of the surfaces.

A content stream comprising video and synchronized illumination data is based on a reference lighting setup from, for example, the site of the content creation. The content stream is received at a user location where the illumination data controls user lighting that is synchronized with the video data, so that when the video data is displayed the user's lighting is in synchronization with the video. A method of obtaining one or more HDR images representative of a scene is described. To reach that aim, the method includes obtaining several LDR images representative of the scene. The method further includes identifying one or more first pixels having a pixel value that is greater than a first determined value (i.e. corresponding to underexposed pixels) or having a pixel value that is less than a second determined value (i.e. corresponding to overexposed pixels). The method further includes determining one second pixel, in one or more other LDR images, that corresponds to the first pixel. In a block of pixels centered on the second pixel, weighting values are determined that are representative of similarity between the second pixel and the other pixels of the block. A HDR image is finally obtained by determining and assigning a new pixel value to the first pixel. The new value is calculated based on weighting values and pixel values associated with pixels of a block of pixels centered on the first pixel.

The corrected luminance value is determined based on at least one of a shape of the over-exposed region, luminance information of pixels surrounding the over-exposed region, and edge information of the pixels surrounding the over-exposed region.
