A process for creating, maintaining, and executing network applications. A user specifies a network application as an interconnection of tasks, each task being addressed to run on one or more computers. Process steps install and execute the application with accommodation for dynamically changing addresses. During execution, process steps compile or interpret source code on remote computers as needed. Process steps permit application changes during execution subject to limitations and fail-safes that prevent non-programmers from creating invalid changes.

Method and apparatus for controlling connected computers without

A method of overlaying onto a parallel processing network configured as an initial hierarchical tree one or more other virtual trees for concurrently performing parallel processing operations via each tree. Tree connect messages identifying a second tree are transmitted from leaf nodes of the initial tree that are to become members of the second tree to a root node of the initial tree. Status information is updated at each node in response to the transmittal and receipt of a connect message. Acknowledge messages are transmitted from the root node of the initial tree to the leaf nodes of the second tree in response to receipt of the connect messages from the leaf nodes. Status information is updated at each node in response to the transmittal and receipt of an acknowledge message. The second tree is established when all of its leaf nodes have received an acknowledge message. At this time, individual nodes of the second tree may be addressed by messages containing the identity of the second tree.

Method of overlaying virtual tree networks onto a message passing

A message passing parallel processing system capable of executing different types of intercommunication protocols simultaneously, as well as plural instances of each type of protocol. Each processing node of the system contains a message passing protocol apparatus comprising a protocol processor and a memory. Messages passed between nodes contains, inter alia, a protocol type and an identification of an instance of the protocol type. Examples of protocol types might be shared memory, hierarchical tree connect, distributed sets, etc. Messages are passed to processing nodes from other processing nodes in fixed sized blocks and only when input buffers are empty. Flow control of the network is self-regulating and the network is deadlock free.
