A soot control system for an internal combustion engine includes an internal combustion engine with a plurality of cylinders. A plurality of engine operating condition sensors are provided. An electronic control unit (ECU) with one or more processors and a non-transitory computer-readable medium storing computer-executable instructions, includes a Gaussian process model. The ECU is configured to receive data from the plurality of engine operating condition sensors. The ECU is configured to calculate a soot parameter of an actual air fuel ratio and calculate a soot parameter of a desired air fuel ratio using the Gaussian process model with the engine operating condition data as input to the Gaussian process model and compare the soot parameter of an actual air fuel ratio and a soot parameter of a desired air fuel ratio to generate a soot offset value.

Transient soot model system and control process

A piston for an internal combustion engine is provided. The piston includes a piston bowl defined by a floor surface and a rim wall extending from an outer periphery of the floor surface in a system vertical direction to circumferential surround the floor surface. The piston bowl includes a center portion that extends above the floor surface. A plurality of protrusions extend radially from the center portion and from the floor surface and are spaced apart such that a spray guide is formed between each of the spaced apart plurality of protrusions. Each of the plurality of protrusions and spray guides are tapered so to terminate prior to the rim wall such that a continuous radius portion is formed from a portion of the rim wall and a portion of the floor surface beyond a respective terminating portion of each of the plurality of protrusions and spray guides.

Piston bowl geometries for internal combustion engines

An exhaust gas catalyst system that includes at least one exhaust canister including an inlet separated from an outlet with catalytic components positioned between the inlet and outlet. The at least one exhaust canister receives a flow of exhaust gas. The at least one exhaust canister includes a pair of concentric passages formed therein including a central passage and an outer passage. A split flap valve is positioned in the inlet. An actuator is coupled to the split flap valve. A control unit is operably connected to the actuator and selectively moves the split flap valve closing one of the concentric passages and locally heating a portion of the catalytic components.

Splitflow catalyst system

An exhaust after-treatment system is coupled to an exhaust pipe of a diesel internal combustion engine (ICE) for treating an exhaust gas. The exhaust after-treatment system includes a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and a SCR coated diesel particulate filter (SDPF) serially disposed in a downstream path of the exhaust gas. An electrically heated catalyst (EHC) is coupled to the DOC and is configured to electrically heat the DOC for reducing the requisite time to reach a DOC light-off temperature. A controller is operably coupled with the DOC and the EHC and is configured to operate the EHC in response to a mid bed temperature of the DOC. More specifically, the controller is configured to supply power to the EHC when the DOC mid bed temperature is below a predetermined value and discontinue the power supply to the EHC when the DOC mid bed temperature is greater than the predetermined value.

Exhaust after-treatment system for diesel internal combustion engines

A system for power integration is provided. The system for power integration includes a planetary gear system with a ring gear, a sun gear and a carrier. A supercharger compressor is mechanically coupled to the ring gear, a secondary turbine is mechanically coupled to the sun gear, and a hybrid energy device is mechanically coupled to the carrier. The system is configured for an internal combustion engine (ICE) to be mechanically coupled to the hybrid energy device through the carrier and a first clutch, and a brake may be mechanically coupled to the supercharger compressor via a band brake or second clutch. The system integrates power between the supercharger compressor, secondary turbine, hybrid energy device and ICE such that enhanced fuel economy is provided.

Systems for power integration of turbines, compressors and hybrid energy devices with internal combustion engines

Systems and methods for non-intrusive closed-loop control of internal combustion engines are provided. Systems of the non-intrusive closed-loop control of internal combustion engines include a plurality of engine operating condition sensors, an electronic control unit with a Gaussian process model, and a look-up table. The electronic control unit estimates an MFB50 of the internal combustion engine using the Gaussian process model and with engine operating condition data as input. A desired MFB50 is obtained from the look-up table and a command of a control parameter to a fuel injector for the internal combustion engine is executed by the electronic control unit and as a function of the comparison of the estimated MFB50 and the desired MFB50.

Systems and methods for non-intrusive closed-loop combustion control of internal combustion engines

A system for treating exhaust gasses from an engine includes directing a spray of reductant into exhaust gasses against a flow of exhaust gasses to a spray target. A selective catalytic reduction catalyst may be positioned downstream of the reductant injector and downstream of the spray target.
