This invention relates to 6 or 7 substituted swainsonine analogues, processes for their preparation and use as therapeutic agents. The invention also relates to pharmaceutical compositions containing the compounds and their use as therapeutics.

Swainsonine derivatives and methods for preparing the same

(-)-Swainsonine may be prepared by (i) reacting a compound of formula (8): ##STR1## wherein OMs is methanesulfonyl with H.sub.2 in the presence of Pd(OH).sub.2 followed by NaOMe, to obtain a compound of formula (9): ##STR2## and (ii) reducing the carbonyl group and hydrolyzing the ketal group in the compound of formula (9) to obtain (-)-swainsonine of formula (1): ##STR3##
