A method for treating emphysema with a condensable vapor includes creating a plurality of collateral channels through the airway walls, and delivering the condensable vapor to the airways. The condensable vapor flows to the diseased parenchymal tissue through the airways and the collateral channels. Condensable vapor to contact the tissue heats the tissue, reducing it in volume. Apparatuses are described to create the openings and ablate the lung tissue.

Method for treating emphysema with condensable thermal vapor

A treatment of obstructive lung disease includes aiming a condensable vapor towards the airway wall, causing a band-shaped lesion to grow to a depth into the airway wall. Ablation parameters are set to control the depth of the band-shaped lesion to encompass the epithelial layer and exclude the smooth muscle layer of the airway. A wide variety of configurations of the vapor delivery are described to create ablation patterns in the airways of the patient with particular emphasis on treating chronic bronchitis.

Vapor ablation treatment of obstructive lung disease

A vapor ablation handpiece for assisting a physician perform vapor ablation with a vapor ablation catheter includes a vapor generating element arranged in a coil shape. A mandrel seated in the body of the handpiece affixes the vapor generating element in the coiled arrangement. A voltage difference is supplied across the length of the vapor generating element when activated, causing the vapor generating element to heat liquid therein converting the liquid to vapor. The heated condensable vapor is delivered to a target tissue through the catheter.

A minimally invasive medical technique for treating lung tumors includes use of multiple ablation modalities in a single procedure. Condensable vapor ablation and electrosurgical ablation are applied to treat the surface of the tumor and to debulk inner regions of the tumor, respectively.

Bronchoscopic multimodality lung tumor treatment

A screening method for identifying a target nerve to ablate in the treatment of inflammatory lung disease including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. The method includes advancing a tool along the airway and into the vicinity of the candidate nerve. The candidate nerve is temporarily blocked or paralyzed. The patient is monitored for an adverse reaction during the step of temporarily blocking. If an adverse reaction is not observed, the candidate nerve is identified as the target nerve. In embodiments, the method further includes the step of ablating the target nerve.

Screening method for a target nerve to ablate for the treatment of inflammatory lung disease

A vapor-based ablation method mitigates constriction of the airways for the treatment of asthma and COPD. A vapor ablation catheter is advanced along the airways, through the airway wall, and to an extra-airway target tissue. The position of the catheter is assessed to determine whether the catheter is in contact with the target tissue. In embodiments, the distal energy delivery section of the catheter is manipulated to contact an exterior surface of the target tissue, or to enter the target tissue. Once the position is confirmed, vapor is delivered to the target tissue through an egress port with a sufficient amount of energy to ablate the target tissue. The target tissue may vary and include smooth muscle surrounding the airways, and nerves that control the smooth muscle. Methods for treating lung cancer are also described including delivering a vapor at lung tumors and growths, and blood vessels feeding the lung tumors and growths.

Extra-airway vapor ablation for treating airway constriction in patients with asthma and COPD

Methods and apparatus for diagnosing and treating disorders of the lung are provided, which may include any number of features. In one embodiment, a method comprises obtaining diagnostic information relating to a patient's lungs, compiling a list of potential treatment plans for lung volume reduction in the first and second lungs, excluding treatment plans from the list of potential treatment plans that propose treatment of a lung segment that falls within a segment exclusion rule, and identifying at least one preferred treatment plan from the list of potential treatment plans that targets sufficiently diseased lung segments while also targeting a preferred combined volume of the first and second lungs.

A medical vapor system and method is provided. The medical vapor system can include a fluid conduit having an inlet, an outlet and a heating section, the inlet being adapted and configured to be connected to a source of liquid water, a resistance heater disposed and configured to generate heat and conduct the heat to the heating section of the fluid conduit to vaporize liquid water flowing through the heating section, a power supply operatively connected to the heater, and a controller adapted to control production of water vapor by the system. Methods of use are also provided.

Systems and methods for treating a lesion in a lung of a patient are described. Embodiments can include navigating a vapor exit port of a vapor delivery catheter to an airway point near a lung region in which the lesion resides, delivering condensable vapor from the vapor delivery catheter along anatomic boundaries of the lung region, and creating a uniform field of necrosis in tissue around the lesion by allowing the condensable vapor to condense.

Methods and systems for determining patient specific treatment parameters for delivering vapor to the lung to treat lung tissue. In some embodiments vapor is delivered to the lung to cause coagulative necrosis, inducing fibrosis and thereby reducing the volume of at least one segment of the lung. The delivery parameters can be adjusted depending on the desired degree of injury to be induced in the lung tissue.
