A module is operable to monitor at least a pressure within a tire of a wheel, the module being operatively mounted to said wheel, the module including (a) a pressure sensor for measuring the pressure (P) and generating a corresponding pressure signal; and b1) an associated data memory including a data field containing data relevant to the functional status of the tire.

Wheel-monitoring module

A method for identifying locations of one or more modules of an apparatus implemented in a vehicle for monitoring operation of at least one wheel of the vehicle includes steps of (a) communicating with one or more modules of the apparatus for receiving their identification codes at a processing arrangement of the apparatus, the one or more modules being mounted on at least one wheel of the vehicle; (b) driving the vehicle around a curved trajectory as sensed by the steering sensing arrangement and recording a direction of steering of the vehicle together with a temporal record of the physical parameter measured by the one or more modules together with their corresponding identification codes, the physical parameter pertaining to one or more tires of the at least one wheel; and (c) applying an analysis to the steering direction and the temporal record in respect of time to identify where the one or more modules are located on the at least one wheel of the vehicle, the analysis utilizing a characteristic that tires on an outside of the curved trajectory will experience a different peak values in the temporal record of the physical parameter than tires on an inside of the curved trajectory, and tires towards a front region of the vehicle experience a change in the temporal record of the physical parameter before and/or at a higher rate than tires towards a rear region of the vehicle for a forward direction of travel of vehicle.

Method of identifying positions of wheel modules

There is provided a method of identifying locations of modules () of an apparatus () for monitoring wheels () of a vehicle (). The sensor modules () operatively revolving with the wheels (). The modules () communicate with a processing arrangement (, ECU) of the vehicle (). The modules () sense a physical parameter of the wheels () and generate corresponding sensor signals for the processing arrangement (). The processing arrangement (, ECU) processes the sensor signals to compute information indicative of operation of the wheels (). The apparatus () also includes a sensor arrangement () for sensing an angular orientation () of the wheels (). The method includes steps of: (b) arranging an elongate feature () in an at least partially transverse direction relative to a direction of travel of the vehicle (); (c) driving the vehicle () over the elongate feature () to cause the wheels (), together with their associated modules (), to contact momentarily onto the elongate feature () and communicating signals including signal components stimulated by contact of the wheels () onto the elongate feature () to the processing arrangement (), the signals identifying a time at which their wheels () contacted onto the elongate feature () and identification codes (ID) of the modules (); and (d) from a temporal sequence of the signals received at the processing arrangement (), identifying whereat modules () are located on the wheels () of the vehicle ().
