A breathing apparatus has a first delivery device for adding a volume of a substance to a gas flow, the delivery device having a gas inlet and a gas outlet. A unit monitors a presence of the substance in a gas downstream the delivery device using a first sensor unit at the gas outlet that provides a first measurement value based on an acoustic property of a gas in a first conduit. A second sensor unit at the gas inlet provides a second measurement value based on an acoustic property of a gas present in the second conduit. A control unit determines the presence of the substance based on the first measurement value or based on a comparison of the first measurement value and the second measurement value.

Breathing apparatus with monitored delivery device

A ventilation system provides patient-triggered support ventilation to a spontaneously breathing patient during ongoing high frequency ventilation (HFV), and has a pneumatic unit operated by a control computer for delivery of breathing gas in response to an effort to breathe by the patient, and an oscillator for superimposing high frequency oscillation onto the breathing gas. The system further includes a bioelectric sensor that measures a bioelectric signal indicative of the patient's efforts to breathe, and the control computer controls the delivery of breathing gas in response to the patient's effort to breathe, based on this bioelectric signal. The ventilation system is hence designed for neurally triggered support ventilation during ongoing HFV, which makes the trigger mechanism of the ventilation system more precise and robust compared to known trigger mechanisms of HFV ventilation systems.

A breathing apparatus has an expiratory flow sensor unit, an expiratory pressure sensor unit, an expiratory pressure regulator, and an expiratory control unit operatively connected to the expiratory pressure sensor unit for a feedback control of an expiratory pressure during an expiratory phase of a breathing cycle. The expiratory control unit is adapted to provide a real time target pressure value during the expiratory phase to the expiratory pressure regulator for adjusting a desired positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) level (PEEP) based on an inspiratory tidal volume of an inspiratory phase of the same breathing cycle and a currently accumulated expiratory tidal volume measured by the expiratory flow sensor unit. In this manner advantageous regulation of PEEP with minimized work of breathing is obtained.

According to the present invention a flow meter is provided for measuring a fluid, comprising a measuring tube with a measuring piston movably arranged in said measuring tube, and elements for changing the direction of movement of the measuring piston in said measuring tube, wherein said measuring piston, when measuring, is designed to be moved in said measuring tube under the influence of said fluid. Sensor elements detect movement of the piston and the direction of movement in said measuring tube, and sensor elements detect when the piston is situated in at least one of its reversing areas before the measuring piston has reached the extreme point of the reversing area, so as to afford a substantially continuous flow detection for said fluid.

Continuous piston flow meter

A device is directly or indirectly connectable to a patient for determining a volume related to the lungs of the patient. The device has an inspiration part through which a breathing gas passes towards the patient, and an expiration part through which the breathing gas passes away from the patient. The inspiration part has a mouthpiece for introducing a change of the gas composition in the breathing gas. The device implements a method for determining the volume with a detector being arranged in the expiration part that measures a measuring parameter which is dependent on the change in the gas composition, and with a calculation unit connected to the detector unit that determines the variation in the measuring parameter, and determines the volume from the determined variation.

An apparatus for determining the proportion of gases in a gas mixture, has a measurement chamber having a chamber defining structure, a gas inlet and a gas outlet, an ultrasound source and an ultrasound detector mounted such that the ultrasound source is capable of transmitting ultrasound through the chamber to the ultrasound detector; a temperature sensor mounted such that the sensor is capable of sensing the temperature in the chamber. An acoustic gas analyzer for gas mixture has an acoustic velocity meter that provides a first output dependent on a detected transmission of acoustic energy through a gas to be analyzed, a temperature probe having a probe time constant that provides a second output indicative of a measured temperature of the gas, and a calculation unit that receives the first and the second outputs and determines compositional information of the gas therefrom. A signal processor is connected between the acoustic velocity meter and the calculation unit and temporally adapts the amplitude of the first output from the meter in a manner dependent on the probe time constant and provides a temporally adapted first output for use as the first output within the calculation unit.

Acoustic analysis of gas mixtures

A mechanical breathing aid has first and second inlets respectively connectable to a source of air and a source of oxygen. A mixing location is in gaseous communication with the first and second inlets, at which controlled amounts of air and oxygen from the respective inlets are mixed. An acoustic analyzer operates during a measurement procedure to access a moisture content value for air from the source of air, to generate acoustic velocity-related information from acoustic energy interaction with the breathing gas, and to determine therefrom an oxygen content. The analyzer operates during a calibration procedure to generate acoustic velocity-related information from acoustic energy interaction with air from the source of air, and to determine therefrom an oxygen content value for the air from which is determined a moisture content value for air.

Method and arrangement for acoustic determination of moisture content of a gas mixture

In a calibration apparatus and method for a resistance thermometer a reference thermometer is located in thermal contact with a gas composition to generate, during a calibration period, a first reference temperature value for the gas composition at a first temperature, and an acoustic meter is located in acoustic contact with the gas composition and, during the calibration period, makes an acoustic velocity-related measurement for use in generating a second reference temperature value for the gas composition at a second temperature. A calibration unit coordinates the first and second reference temperature values with first and second measurement temperature values provided by the resistance thermometer at the first and the second temperatures, respectively, and establishes a calibration relationship therefrom.

An acoustic meter assembly has a measurement chamber for receiving a pressurized fluid to be monitored; an acoustic transducer for transmitting acoustic energy into and receiving the transmitted energy from the measurement chamber; and a holder for the acoustic transducer including a receiving section in which the acoustic transducer is locatable to expose a front surface to fluid pressure within the measurement chamber. The holder further has a pressure transfer arrangement for communicating pressure between the measurement chamber and a rear surface of the transducer, opposite to the front surface.

Acoustic meter assembly

An acoustic gas monitor has a measurement chamber into which a reference gas of known composition is received and is provided with a wall section for the selective transmission of a gaseous substance to be monitored between the reference gas internal the chamber and a host gas externally of the chamber. An acoustic velocity meter is arranged to supply to an analyzer a signal indicative of an acoustic velocity within the mixture of reference gas and gaseous substance in the chamber. The analyzer being programmed to derive, from the velocity measurement made within the single chamber, information relating to the level of the gaseous substance to be monitored.
