Methods and apparatus are provided for processing communication traffic that includes a plurality of traffic units, each traffic unit having a header and a payload. In one embodiment, header compression is selectively applied to headers of traffic units from the communication traffic, and bit-level bulk data compression is selectively applied to the communication traffic. The bit-level bulk data compression involves accumulating blocks of bits, including headers and payloads of traffic units from the communication traffic, and operating on each block individually. In another embodiment, bit-level bulk data decompression is selectively applied to the communication traffic, and header decompression is selectively applied to headers of traffic units from the communication traffic. The bit-level bulk data decompression involves accumulating blocks of bits, including headers and payloads of traffic units from the communication traffic, and operating on each block individually.

Fixed-length communication traffic blocks, for transmission over a wireless communication link, are generated from communication traffic that is received at a primary communication apparatus. The generated blocks are distributed between a first wireless communication link associated with the primary apparatus and a second wireless communication link associated with a secondary apparatus, for transmission of the communication traffic blocks over the first and second wireless communication links. The distribution of the communication traffic blocks is through an inter-apparatus communication link between the primary and secondary apparatus. Communication traffic blocks that are received over the second wireless communication link are transferred to the primary apparatus through the inter-apparatus communication ink and combined, with blocks that are received on the first wireless communication link, into a communication traffic stream. One or more secondary wireless communication links may be provided by one or more respective installations of secondary apparatus.

Apparatus and methods for aggregation of communication bandwidth over multiple wireless communication links

Wireless mesh network communication apparatus and methods are disclosed. Directional antennas are respectively operatively coupled to dedicated communication devices to provide multiple independent wireless communication links. Exchange of communication traffic through the wireless communication links provided by the communication devices and the antennas is controlled by a switch. Any or all of the antennas may be adjustable so as to provide for flexibility in antenna beam alignment. Beam alignment may be physically or electronically adjustable. Radio units including the communication devices and the antennas, and possibly also the switch, may be enclosed in a single housing. The housing may be shared with other components such as wireless communication network base station antennas.

Wireless network communication apparatus, methods, and integrated antenna structures

Apparatus and methods for controlling effective communication traffic rates are disclosed. Communication signals that include communication traffic are generated for transfer on a wireless communication link based on fixed signalling characteristics. An effective communication traffic rate of the wireless communication link is controlled by controlling a rate at which communication traffic is provided to a communication module, illustratively a wireless transceiver, that generates the communication signals. Techniques according to embodiments of the invention thereby enable rate control for wireless communication links without changing wireless signalling characteristics or subjecting links to downtime during link reconfiguration. Collaborative rate control, in which rate control information is exchanged between rate control systems, is also contemplated.
