A high frequency power supply, in particular a plasma supply device, for generating an output power greater than 1 kW at a basic frequency of at least 3 MHz with at least one switch bridge, which has two series connected switching elements, wherein one of the switching elements is connected to a reference potential varying in operation, and is activated by a driver, and wherein the driver has a differential input with two signal inputs and is connected to the reference potential varying in operation.

Isolating a control signal source in a high frequency power supply

An RF power supply, in particular a plasma supply device, for generating an output power greater than 500 W at an output frequency of at least 3 MHz includes at least one inverter connectable to a DC power supply, which inverter comprises at least one switching element and an output network. An accompanying line connects an electrical component to the inverter by a lead-in of the output network.

An HF plasma process excitation configuration includes an HF generator that is connected to a plasma load through a directional coupler. The directional coupler includes a transmission line, a first coupling line for detecting reflected power from the plasma load, and a second coupling line for detecting forward power from the HF generator, is the first coupling line is spaced apart from the transmission line and is terminated at least at one end with a termination resistance. The second coupling line is spaced apart from the transmission line and is terminated at least at one end with a termination resistance. Each coupling line has a predetermined and adjusted characteristic impedance, and the termination resistances each have a resistance value that corresponds within a tolerance to the characteristic impedance of the associated coupling line with a tolerance.

Directional coupler

A 3 dB coupler includes at least one first and one second electric conductor that are spaced apart from each other and are capacitively and inductively coupled to each other in a coupling region. The first conductor represents the primary side of a transformer, and the second conductor represents the secondary side of the transformer. The first and second conductors each have a winding number of n&#x3e;1.

A 90&#xb0; hybrid for splitting or interconnecting radio frequency power includes four gate connections, capacitances and inductances for electric capacitive coupling and magnetic inductive coupling, an arrangement of strip conductors that are disposed approximately parallel to each other and whose ends form gate connections, and whose dimensions and mutual separations are dimensioned to form the electric capacitive and magnetic inductive couplings of the 90&#xb0; hybrid, and a ferrite ring surrounding the strip conductors to increase the inductive coupling.

A strip transmission line for guiding a wave therein, including a strip-shaped inner conductor; an outer conductor surrounding the inner conductor with a clearance; a ferrite coating carried on at least one of the conductors; and at least one throughgoing slot provided in the inner and outer conductors for dividing the inner and outer conductors into at least two inner conductor sections and at least two outer conductor sections. The slots extend in a direction of wave propagation, whereby a variable current applied to the inner and outer conductors flows in one direction in one of the inner and outer conductor sections and returns in an opposite direction in another of the inner and outer conductor sections for generating a variable premagnetizing field within the strip transmission line between the inner and outer conductors to vary an electric length of the strip transmission line.

According to an embodiment of the present invention, a high power RF electric signal transmission system such as a TV broadcast system operating in the range of 100 kW at a UHF band includes one or more high power klystrons whose outputs are combined and fed to the first port of a high power Y-junction three port ferrite circulator, the second port of the circulator feeds the broadcast system radiating antenna system, the third port of the circulator feeds a non-reflecting RF load and means are provided for tuning the circulator to compensate for changes in the temperature of the circulator ferrite material, so that the klystron(s) are isolated from reflections from the antenna system. According to another embodiment, means are provided for selectively coupling the second port of the circulator to the radiating antenna system or to a station load whereby the RF power from the klystrons may be switched from the antenna system to the station load without reflected RF from such switching action flowing to the klystron(s). The invention has particular application to a high power HDTV broadcast system due to the particular requirements of HDTV broadcasting, as more fully described herein.

A high power, high frequency, Y-junction three port circulator containing at least one metal plate in the Y-junction covered with ferromagnetic material and an external magnet producing a magnetic field through the ferromagnetic material so that it is magnetized to saturation magnetization when the temperature of the material is within a predetermined temperature range; and a method and means of maintaining the temperature of the ferrite material within said predetermined range even while the circulator operates in a variable ambient environment at high power, including means connected to the metal plate for heating and cooling the plate, thereby controlling the temperature of the ferromagnetic material to maintain the temperature thereof within said predetermined temperature range.

A ferrite tuning arrangement for a resonator includes a ferrite loaded line in the form of a stripline having an inner conductor, an outer conductor and a ferrite disposed between the inner and outer conductors, with the stripline being adapted for coupling to the resonator. A reflecting termination is provided for the stripline and a magnetic circuit is provided for generating a variable premagnetization field for the ferrite in an orientation perpendicular to a high frequency magnetic field existing in the stripline.

Resonator tuning arrangement

A phase shifter suitable for operation at very high high-frequency power is composed of a waveguide in which ferromagnetic material is distributed along at least one plane extending in the direction of wave propagation. The ferromagnetic material is exposed to a static magnetic field oriented parallel to the plane. The ferromagnetic material is shaped so that it forms a plurality of three-dimensional regions which extend in the direction of the applied static magnetic field from one waveguide wall to the opposite waveguide wall. These regions may be provided by a plurality of ferromagnetic rods, preferably housed in one or more dielectric containers to direct a flow of coolant fluid, or by a ferromagnetic body having a plurality of bores. Such bores also preferably direct a flow of coolant fluid.

Microwave phase shifter

A junction circulator suitable for high power, high-frequency use has a microwave junction zone which is penetrated by a static magnetic field. Disposed in the microwave junction zone is a ferromagnetic resonator composed of different dielectric media, at least one of which has ferromagnetic characteristics. The interfaces between the various dielectric media form three-dimensional bodies which extend over the entire height of the junction zone and which have cross sections that do not change in the direction of the static magnetic field. These interfaces may be provided by parallel ferrite rods, or a ferrite body with parallel bores.

Microwave junction circulator

A junction circulator for high power, high-frequency use employs cooled ferrite material disposed in the microwave junction zone where it is exposed to a static magnetic field. The cooled ferrite material is provided by a plurality of small ferrite particles which are suspended in a liquid coolant.

A waveguide junction circulator for a high power application at a high operating frequency. The circulator includes a plurality of connecting waveguides, each of which has a standard height dimension corresponding to the operating frequency; a resonance cavity; a plurality of spaced and cooled, superposed metal plates covered with ferrite discs disposed in the cavity; a magnet disposed outside the cavity for generating a magnetic field oriented perpendicular to the ferrite discs and penetrating the cavity; and a plurality of junction arms each having one end communicating with the cavity and another end forming a connection with a respective one of the plurality of connecting waveguides. The circulator has a height dimension in its region penetrated by the magnetic field that is reduced by at least 20% compared to the standard height dimension of the connecting waveguides. Each connection presents a transition from the connecting waveguide to the junction arm that has a sudden change in cross section from the reduced height of the circulator to the standard height of the connecting waveguide. Reactance elements are provided in the junction arms to form multi-section filters.

An arrangement for protecting devices connected to transmission lines against excess or interfering voltages resulting from lightning strokes and the action of EMP or EMI, which arrangement includes a circuit board carrying connectors for establishing connections with such transmission lines and with the devices, lightning protection chokes connected in series between the transmission line connectors and the device connectors, first excess voltage arresters connected between the transmission line connectors and the chokes for effecting coarse overvoltage protection for the devices, second excess voltage arresters connected between the device connectors and the chokes for effecting fine overvoltage protection for the devices, and a network with frequency dependent behavior connected between the device connectors and the second excess voltage arresters, and a ground conductor constituted by a large-area metal plate oriented parallel to the circuit board.
