Continuous dry quenching of coke is carried out with an inert gas circulated through hot coke in a vertical chamber and through a heat exchanger. The vertical chamber comprises a top prechamber below a charging opening and a quenching chamber which is below the prechamber. The quenching chamber has a bottom gas entry and a bottom coke discharge. A gas exit between the prechamber and the quenching chamber supplies gas to the heat exchanger. A gas entry and/or a gas exit communicating with the top of the prechamber is used to control the flow of gas so that the temperature of the gas removed from the vertical chamber remains constant during quenching operations when there is a disturbance to the flow of coke.

Method to dry quench coke

A coke oven construction is provided having a vertical ascension pipe connected by an elbow to a gas-collecting main. A water seal is placed between the elbow and the collecting main and carries a stream jet aspirating pump. The seal and pump are movable in and out of position and the pump can be closed off.

Coke oven apparatus

An enclosed quenching car movable along a battery of coke ovens and adapted to receive coke from each oven in succession and quench it without polluting the atmosphere. The car includes an enclosure containing a pivotal quenching tank with interior dimensions substantially corresponding to the dimensions of the carbonized coke cake to be accommodated therein. One side of the pivotal tank is formed from a water-permeable grid such that the coke cake within the tank can be rotated into a horizontal plane and the coke completely immersed in water passing through the permeable grid; while dust and gases are extracted without polluting the atmosphere. In this manner, the coke is quenched in such a way that it is yielded in large pieces with a defined uniform water content in the coarse and fine coke.

Coke oven quenching car

The operation of a battery of coke ovens with regenerative change of draught on heating flues includes adjustably controlling the combustion of gases in the heating flues to insure uniform vertical heating of the coking coal in the coke oven chambers. Control elements for the operation of discrete heating flues in each heating wall are adjusted to insure uniform heating of the coking coal along the length of the heating walls. A gas supply rate is selected for the delivery of gas into the heating flues to define a carbonizing time corresponding to a high output capacity of coke from the coke oven battery. The heat consumption by the coking coal in the coke oven chambers is reduced during each regenerative half period by interruptions to the supply of gas at the gas supply rate without modifying or adjusting the control elements employed to insure uniform heat distribution in the heating flues. The method may further include delivering gas into the heating flues at a greater supply rate than a gas supply rate at which combustion throughout non-interrupted regenerative periods will yield sufficient heat to achieve the high output capacity of coke. When this greater supply rate of gas is selected, the interruptions to the supply of gas are carried out to insure carbonizing the coking coal in the oven chambers within the carbonizing time corresponding to a high output capacity of coke from the battery. To interrupt the gas supply, gas supply valves are closed. The set positions of control valves for the air and waste gases are maintained or, alternatively, such control valves are positioned for operation during the next succeeding regenerative half period. A throttle valve may be positioned to maintain a relatively slight draught on the waste gas flue; however, valves for controlling the flow of regeneratively heated air and burnt gases may be positioned to stagnate the flow thereof.

Method of operating a battery of coke ovens

Vertical heating flues between adjacent coke oven chambers include rich-gas burners extending essentially to progressively increasing elevations in the flues in a manner such that the burner exit zones increase from flue-to-flue to a maximum elevation at the pusher side of each oven chamber. At the pusher side, the coke oven chamber has a minimum width which increases to a maximum width at the coke side where the rich-gas burners have exit zones at the lowest elevation in the heating flues. Such a rich-gas burner arrangement may additionally include rich-gas burners with exit zones at the soles of alternate heating flues while the remaining heating flues contain the burners extended to progressively increasing elevations. When the coke oven chambers are heated by twin-heating flues, the rich-gas burners extend vertically from the soles of only one heating flue in each of the twin-heating flues.

Apparatus for cleaning incrusted deposits from the regions of coke oven doors between a central refractory sealing plug and a surrounding sealing edge or strip with the use of two pairs of nozzles carried on the upper and lower ends of a frame which can traverse the inner end of the door on which the sealing plug is carried. The frame has a length preferably one-half the height of the door such that the upper nozzles will clean the upper half of the door while the lower nozzles clean the lower half. The nozzles are pivotally carried on the frame such that they can be actuated to clean the horizontally-extending portions of the door between the sealing plug and the sealing strip at the upper and lower extremities of the door.

Apparatus for cleaning coke oven doors

In the cellar located below an underjet-type of battery of coke ovens are gas distribution pipes. A gas dispensing nozzle is located within each of the separate pipes which extend from a distribution pipe through the regenerators into the burners for a row of heating flues between two coking chambers. These nozzles are cleaned by injecting compressed air from a pipeline that extends parallel to the rich gas distribution pipe. A nipple opposite each nozzle interconnects the air pipeline and the gas pipe. The nipple receives a plug having either an orifice or a nozzle tube to direct compressed air toward the gas dispensing nozzle. A supply header for compressed air extends along the battery of coke ovens and this header is connected by a valve to each compressed air pipeline in the cellar. A controller responsive to a timer operates the valves during regenerative heating reversals for periodic cleaning of the gas dispensing nozzles with compressed air.

Decarbonizing apparatus for an underjet-type of coke oven battery

The heating walls for a battery of coke oven chambers are formed by rows of twin heating flues. Each heating flue includes a crosswall having an internal passageway with exit ports at graduated elevation to form a header flue. The header flues in two adjacent heating walls are connected by a first series of ducts to regenerators that supply preheated air during the heating half-cycle. A second series of ducts extend between other regenerators and exit ports on the sole of the heating flues for conducting preheated lean gas or, optionally, preheated air when heating with rich gas. The ducts of each series alternate from heating wall to heating wall so that the sequence of upgoing and downgoing flues alternates from heating wall to heating wall. In the middle of a heating wall, a flue crosswall has two header flues with exit ports at opposite sides whereby the upgoing flue of each twin flue is located toward the middle of the heating wall during one regenerative half-cycle and toward the ends of the coke oven chamber during the other regenerative half-cycle.

Coke oven battery

A coke guide machine includes a shuttle car carried by rails on a coke bench for a battery of coke ovens. Movable along the shuttle car is a carriage having two support stations that are rotatable about a common vertical axis. The support stations include scissor arms that form extendible support devices, one of which carries a handling device for a coke oven door and the other carries a device adapted to clean exposed sealing surfaces of an emptied coking chamber. The carriage also supports a coke guide including an extendible section to bridge an open passageway wherein an inspection car moves along the coke bench between the shuttle car and the coke ovens. A door cleaning machine is positioned in a stationary manner on the shuttle car to clean a coke oven door carried to it by the door handling device after 180.degree. rotation by the support station and movement of the carriage along the shuttle car in a manner to concurrently align the opened coking chamber with the device adapted to clean exposed sealing surfaces thereof.

Coke guide machine for a battery of coke ovens

A charging car supports a plurality of hoppers in a manner such that two hoppers for supplying coal to adjacent charging holes are supported one after the other in a consecutive relationship along a line which is generally parallel to movement by the charging car. A conveyor conducts coal from each hopper to a telescopic charging tube which communicates with the charging hole in the roof of a coking chamber. Skirt-like walls enclose the sides of the spaces containing two of the hoppers to conduct smoke and other gases upwardly toward a roof which is supported by stanchions at each side of the battery of coke ovens. In one embodiment, two roof sections extend from the sides of a battery of coke ovens toward the center thereof. Gas-conducting mains receive gases via outlet pipes having control valves from the spaces beneath the roofs.

Charging car for coke ovens

Regenerative heating of a coke oven battery includes the combustion of lean gas and air in heating chambers disposed between the coking chambers or, alternatively, if desired, the combustion of rich gas and air in the heating chambers. Each heating chamber includes a plurality of header walls forming upgoing and downgoing heating flues. Each header wall includes at least one internal duct in open communication with a plurality of vertically-spaced exit ports at the common side of a header wall. The internal ducts receive either preheated air or preheated lean gas for combustion in a heating flue. The cross-sectional size of the exit ports to discharge air in a given heating flue increases upwardly from port to port along the header wall whereby the amount of air supplied at the sole and lower part of the heating flue is insufficient for complete combustion of the amount of lean gas supplied thereto. The cross-sectional sizes of the plurality of exit ports for lean gas in the same heating flue decrease upwardly from port-to-port along the header wall such that the amounts of air and lean gas supplied to the heating flue are sufficient for complete combustion of the smoke gas discharged from the heating flue. In one embodiment, each header wall includes two internal ducts with the discharge ports thereof in open communication with different heating flues. In a further embodiment, each header wall includes a single internal duct having exit ports at opposite sides. Combustion takes place in all the heating flues which are upgoing and located at one side of the oven chamber. A top duct interconnects all the upgoing flues with downgoing heating flues located at the other side of the oven chamber during a regenerative half-cycle.

Coke oven battery having twin heating flues

An enclosure in the form of a shed is disposed to extend along the entire length of the battery of ovens at the coke discharge side thereof. The shed roof rises from the top of the ovens to a shed wall spaced outwardly from the ovens beyond a track for a quench car. The shed wall essentially supports the weight of the shed roof in a cantilever fashion. Within the shed a baffle plate, carried by the shed wall, extends in an upward direction toward the battery of coke ovens. A conveyor is carried by the shed wall along its length for conveying solid particles of coke dropping from the baffle plate onto the conveyor. The shed further includes a pipe for extracting smoke within the shed which occurs when hot coke is pressed out of an oven chamber. The smoke extraction pipe is carried in one embodiment by the shed roof vertically above the baffle plate, in a second embodiment, by the shed wall above the upper end of the baffle plate and in a third embodiment by the shed wall at the lower end of the baffle plate.

Shed-type enclosure at the coke side of coke ovens

In a coke oven, a coke discharge opening communicating with the coking chamber is closed by a door which carries an angularly-shaped packing strip having an extended edge surface for engaging a door frame. The packing strip is adjustably supported by clamping plates attached to the door. The extended edge surface of the packing strip is resiliently urged at spaced locations about the periphery of the door by means of a spring-biased plunger carried by guide plates that are adjustably positioned on the door. The disclosure additionally provides stop plates at opposite sides of the door frame for engagement with adjustable bolts supported by the door for adjustably locating the door relative to the door frame.
