Prior electrochromic devices frequently suffer from high levels of defectivity. The defects may be manifest as pin holes or spots where the electrochromic transition is impaired. This is unacceptable for many applications such as electrochromic architectural glass. Improved electrochromic devices with low defectivity can be fabricated by depositing certain layered components of the electrochromic device in a single integrated deposition system. While these layers are being deposited and/or treated on a substrate, for example a glass window, the substrate never leaves a controlled ambient environment, for example a low pressure controlled atmosphere having very low levels of particles. These layers may be deposited using physical vapor deposition.

Fabrication of low defectivity electrochromic devices

Prior electrochromic devices frequently suffer from poor reliability and poor performance. Some of the difficulties result from inappropriate design and construction of the devices. In order to improve device reliability two layers of an electrochromic device, the counter electrode layer and the electrochromic layer, can each be fabricated to include defined amounts of lithium. Further, the electrochromic device may be subjected to a multistep thermochemical conditioning operation to improve performance. Additionally, careful choice of the materials and morphology of some components of the electrochromic device provides improvements in performance and reliability. In some devices, all layers of the device are entirely solid and inorganic.

Electrochromic devices

An optically variable device is disclosed having a substrate with an array of pyramidal structures formed upon it or within it. The structures are coated with an optically variable color-shifting coating. Each of the structures form a pyramidal-like having at least three slanted faces and wherein one or more colors seen when viewing the pyramids vary as substrate is rotated at least 30 degrees about an axis orthogonal to the substrate. In order to see a color shift the device is rotated around the surface normal of the substrate, while keeping the angle of incidence to the light source the same, and keeping the viewing angle the same. Various forms of pyramids may be used, however pyramids with planar faces are most suitable.

Structured surfaces that exhibit color by rotation

An optically variable device is disclosed having a substrate with an array of pyramidal structures formed upon it or within it. The structures are preferably formed by printing pyramids with an optically variable color-shifting ink using an Intaglio-like printing process. Alternatively the structure can be formed by embossing a layer of ink with positive pyramids so as to yield an array of positive embossed pyramids. Each of the structures form a pyramidal-like having at least three slanted faces and wherein one or more than one color is seen when viewing the pyramids vary as substrate is rotated at least 30 degrees about an axis orthogonal to the substrate. In order to see a color shift the device is rotated around the surface normal of the substrate, while keeping the angle of incidence to the light source the same, and keeping the viewing angle the same. Various forms of pyramids may be used, however pyramids with planar faces are most suitable.

One exemplary embodiment of an electrochromic device comprises a single cavity Fabry-P&#xe9;rot filter in which the metal conductive layers forming the cavity are sandwiched by conductive dielectric layers. Another exemplary embodiment of an electrochromic device comprises a dual-cavity Fabry-P&#xe9;rot filter.

The present invention relates to electrically-conductive, absorbing, contrast-enhancing antireflection coatings having excellent optical properties characterized by, specifically, a large bandwidth ratio, i.e., a ratio indicative of the range of wavelengths for which the reflectance value is less than 0.6%, and a small brightness value for the visible wavelengths. It has been surprisingly discovered that a simple, two-layer substrate coating consisting of only a first thin layer of a transparent material having a low refractive index and a second very thin layer of an absorbing, electrically conductive, transition metal oxynitride material provides high performance, electrically conductive, contrast-enhancing antireflection coatings having small brightness values and large bandwidth ratios. The present invention provides antireflection coatings having brightness values less than or equal to about 0.22, and preferably less than or equal to about 0.15. One important advantage of the present invention is that, due to the simplicity of the design and the suitability and efficiency of deposition of the materials in an in-line DC reactive magnetron sputtering process, the high performance, absorbing, electrically conductive, and contrast-enhancing antireflection coatings in accord with the present invention can be produced in a very cost-effective manner.
