A method of manufacturing a guidewire having a discrete length. The method includes the steps of feeding a first end of a corewire into an extrusion device, gripping the first end of the corewire with a gripping apparatus, and extruding a first extrusion material onto an outer surface of the corewire while the gripping apparatus pulls the corewire through the extrusion device to form an extrusion jacket on the outer surface of the corewire. The corewire has a predetermined length corresponding to a length of the guidewire.

Method of manufacturing a guidewire with an extrusion jacket

An intravascular filter can capture and eliminate emboli. In particular, an intravascular filter may include a plurality of filter legs extending from an apical head. The filter legs may be configured to capture emboli. A drug reservoir that includes or contains a therapeutic drug can be disposed near the apical head. The therapeutic drug, such as a thrombolytic or anti-coagulatory drug, may be eluted in response to a captured emboli.

An intravascular filter having centering capabilities and a device for manipulation of the filter within a vessel. The manipulation device includes a grasping member disposed at the distal end of an elongate shaft, wherein the grasping member may be used to engage a portion of the filter.

Filter with positioning and retrieval devices and methods

A side loading, wire torquing device includes a body portion having a channel in which a wire is fitted. In one embodiment, a slider is movable along the channel to secure the wire between the slider and the fixed surface in the channel such that rotation of the torquing device rotates the wire therein. In another embodiment of the invention, the torquing device includes a bottom and top section folded over a wire. In another embodiment, the channels impart a bend to the wire to increase the effective torque that can be applied to the wire by rotating the device. In yet another embodiment, the torquing device has a tapered shape and includes a ring that is slideable over the device to compress a wire in a channel. In all embodiments, the torquing device may include a clip to secure several looped coils of wire when not in use.

An apparatus and system for removing an obstruction from a body lumen simultaneously mechanically dislodges the obstruction, macerates the obstruction, and aspirates the effluent caused thereby. The maceration is effected by directing pressurized fluid to the obstruction, while the obstruction is dislodged by a tip portion formed on the end of a guidewire. The apparatus includes a flexible catheter having at least two channels individually accommodating fluid flow paths towards and away from the obstruction. The guidewire may be disposed in either of the channels or a third channel formed in the flexible catheter. The apparatus also includes a drive unit for rotating the guidewire. The drive unit may be an external drive unit, such as an electrical motor, or may include drive elements formed on the guidewire within a drive chamber, across which the fluid flows and imparts energy against the drive elements to cause rotation of the guidewire.

Apparatus and system for removing an obstruction from a lumen

A substrate, such as a catheter or a guide wire, or a portion of the substrate is provided with a lubricous, hydrophilic abrasion-resistant coating by: (a) coating the substrate with a first aqueous coating composition having an aqueous dispersion or emulsion of a polymer having organic acid functional groups and a polyfunctional crosslinking agent having functional groups capable of reacting with organic acid groups, and drying the coating to obtain a substantially water-insoluble coating layer having excess polyfunctional including functional groups being reactive with organic acid groups remaining; and (b) contacting the dried water-insoluble coating layer with a second aqueous coating composition having an aqueous solution or dispersion of a hydrophilic polymer having organic acid functional groups, a polymer having organic acid functional groups and a polyfunctional crosslinking agent having functional groups capable of reacting with organic acid groups, and drying the combined coating to form an intermediate coating, whereby the polymer and the hydrophilic polymer of the second composition become bonded to the polymer of the first coating composition through the excess crosslinking agent; and (c) contacting the dried intermediate coating with a third aqueous coating composition having an aqueous solution or dispersion of a hydrophilic polymer having organic acid functional groups, and drying the combined coatings, the hydrophilic polymer of the third coating composition thereby becoming bonded to the polymers of the second coating composition through the excess crosslinking agent. The dryings can be carried out at ambient (room) temperature.
