Thermally inhibited polysaccharides and process of preparing

This invention relates to a starch based tablet disintegrant useful at low addition levels and providing equally effective properties in water and physiological fluids. The starches are characterized by their low solubility in cold water, high swelling power and labile birefringence in the dry state, which rapidly disappears upon addition of water. The preferred starches are inhibited then processed to remove a portion of the granular structure.

Rapidly expanding starches with altered crystalline structure

This invention relates to a method of using compressible polysaccharides having a tap density of less than 0.4 g/ml as a filler/binder for tablets prepared by direct compression, excipient blends including said polysaccharides, a method of tableting an active ingredient therein from the excipient blends and the tablets produced therefrom. More particularly, this invention relates to the use of low-density starches as binders for tablets prepared by direct compression, excipient blends, and methods of tableting an active ingredient therein from such starches. Further, this invention describes a starch-based excipient composition having a tap density of less than 0.4 g/ml, which has excellent moisture resistance.

Polysaccharide material for direct compression

This invention is directed to degraded, hydrated particulate starches that are hydrophobically modified and a method of providing paper with reduced porosity, resistance to liquid penetration and increased surface strength comprising applying to the surface of a paper substrate an effective amount of a surface sizing composition which comprises such starch. In particular, the starches are those in which the starch base is degraded to a water fluidity (WF) of from about 10 to 80 or the modified and/or particulate starch is degraded using a substantially equivalent amount of degradation agent and substantially the same reaction conditions, the starch is modified with a hydrophobic hydrocarbon group of 5 to 23 carbon atoms at about 1 to 20% substitution level by weight of bound hydrophobe based on the weight of starch, and the hydrated starch has a volume average hydrated particle size of at least about 20 microns and a volume fraction of hydrated particles at 1% solids of at least about 5%.

Degraded hydrophobic, particulate starches and their use in paper sizing

An aqueous, light weight paper laminating adhesive comprising a continuous aqueous phase of from about 15 to 50% by weight of polysaccharide material dispersed in water, the continuous phase polysaccharide material having a zero-shear viscosity of greater than 0.07 Pa&middot;s when measured at 26% (&plus;/&minus;1% solids) and a shear rate of 0.1s ; a shear-thinning index of 0.90 to 1.1; and bleed time of greater than 15 seconds. Also disclosed is another adhesive composition, which is particularly useful in non-contact spay applications and comprises the continuous phase polysaccharide phase described above as well as a second component comprising a water swellable, insoluble polysaccharide particulate phase.
